Greensky Bluegrass on Tour

It might not be out of line to call Greensky Bluegrass the Grateful Dead of the progressive bluegrass scene. Like the Dead, they combine several strands of American musical tradition into a sound that's best experienced in concert and leaves plenty of room for jamming, and, true to form, their live recordings are as enthusiastically received as their studio albums. In fact, members of the Dead have collaborated with Greensky at various points. And while their repertoire contains powerful original material, Greensky have also become known for transforming popular tunes from disparate genres into something all their own. Amid a batch of their own tunes, in concert they might tackle The Allman Brothers Band's "Ain't Wastin' Time No More," Prince's "1999" or Tears for Fears' "Everybody Wants to Rule the World." But whatever enters their set, and no matter the source, it ends up definitively Greensky.

Greensky Bluegrass in Concert

Kalamazoo, Michigan, is the birthplace of one of the most unique bands in progressive bluegrass. It was in 2009 that banjo player Michael Bont, mandolinist Paul Hoffman and guitarist Dave Bruzza formed the first incarnation of Greensky Bluegrass in Kalamazoo. By the time they released their debut album, Less Than Supper, in 2004, dobro man Al Bates and bass player Chris Carr had come aboard as well. Personnel changes have occurred since then, and while the original trio remains at the core of Greensky Bluegrass, they were eventually joined by bassist Mike Devol and dobro player Anders Beck in a lineup that has developed a musical language all its own. Naturally, that language draws most strongly from Greensky's bluegrass roots, but it also incorporates elements of rock, folk, jazz and more. Not only has the band long been a mainstay of the biggest bluegrass festivals, their knack for improvisational excursions has also earned them a place of honor on the jamband circuit. But then, Greensky's ability to engage a multitude of audiences has always been at the heart of the band's appeal. Previously, Greensky Bluegrass has sold out venues to capacity, like Tabernacle and House of Blues.

    Greensky is not bluegrass

by JerBear9 on 1/17/15U.S. Cellular Stage at the Bijou Theatre - Knoxville

Too loud, particularly the bass. Too many flashy lights in my eyes. And what's up with all of the stage smoke? The volume of the music made the vocals impossible to understand. They are really a rock band using bluegrass instruments.

Great band, a bit too loud

by Mimosasmom on 12/2/14State Theatre, Kalamazoo - Kalamazoo

I love GS BG and the theater is awesome. The first half was too loud or not mixed right. Couldn't hardly hear the singing and lyrics are as enjoyable as the instruments. Second half was better.

by TMahre on 10/4/14Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

This show was the highlight of all bluegrass I have heard this year. Greensky never let's up....never pauses....and their music flies right into the heart. A tremendously talented band. We loved every minute! Shake and Swear were a good back up too.

Surprisingly one of the best shows that I've seen!

by WackyGuy on 9/16/14Paradise Rock Club - Boston

While I knew this would be a good show, I did not expect to come away considering it to be one of the best shows that i've ever seen. Greensky is tighter than any bluegrass/jam band that I've ever heard before. They're songs have such great melodies and there jams are not too long nor too short. They played for 3 hours without looking tired or lethargic at all. Could tell the band was having a great time and so was the crowd.

    Best of Greensky

This was the best GB show I have seen. Great venue, great passion by the band, and Tim Carbone showing up was just the icing on the cake!

Bringing Mountain Music to the City!

    by Nah44 on 1/19/128x10 - Baltimore

With an invovative twist on what is an often stigmatized genre of music, Greensky Bluegrass turned a small Baltimore City crowd into a cocophanous "Yeehaw!" hillbilly mob. While Todd Shaeffer hypnotized the crowd right off the bat with a smooth "James Taylor-esque" demeanor, the atmosphere was quickly invorgarated with the first pluck of the banjo string. True masters of their craft, Todd Shaeffer and the Greensky Bluegrass band electrified the quaint 8 x 10 venue last Tuesday night; and brought out the little bit of "hick" that resides somwhere inside us all.

Greensky Bluegrass NYE at the Majestic Detroit.

by LoonyJeff on 1/2/12Majestic Theatre - Detroit

First up was dinner at the Majestic Theater, I had the prime rib, Ms Loony had the lobster tail, both were excellent. We finished up and head for the Majestic Theater, inside grabbed one of the only 10 chairs. Being early does have it's advangages. Magpodz up first, excellent tight rythym section and keyboardist. Odd band in that they have a trumpet rather than a lead guitar. No matter they can play with the best of the jam bands out there. Tight tight tight. On to GSBS, the headliner, while an excellent musical band, the sound was glaring off the mandolin, and guitars. But they came to play. Then had magical moment during the night and locked into a groove so tight, it was like they were on rails. Excellent band see them if you can. Drinks were fairly priced, service was quick and the place was packed. An excellent way to spend NYE. Had a great time.

Another solid performance by the best young newgrass band in the country. GSBG came back after a month long holiday hiatus and got right back into the groove with this show.

A new school twist on an old school tradition

by SnoopTrog on 12/20/11The Mint - Los Angeles

Greensky Bluegrass are really talented young musicians who know how to play. They're hot pickin' some standards and they write excellent originals. The solos enliven the crowd and get EVERYBODY dancing.

The crowd was getting bored ... the songs went on for way too long ... band had no energy. We were really disappointed. The bartenders were jerks.

    Greensky Bluegrass w/Whitewater Ramble

by FindOrion on 5/29/11Bluebird Theater - Denver

The opening band, Whitewater Ramble was AMAZING!! The energy they brought to the stage was contagious and I can't imagine anyone in the place not dancing along! Then, Greensky Bluegrass took the stage around 10:30 (on a Thursday, which was a little late for this old girl) and also played some very inspired songs, though with a little less energy. If you are going to have a concert that doesn't start until 9, I would suggest having the lineup switched around. Though Greensky Bluegrass was great, their songs were slower and didn't keep you awake, thus, when we left between 11:30 and 12, the crowd had definitely started to peter out. Overall though, very enjoyable experience!
