Greensky Bluegrass on Tour

It might not be out of line to call Greensky Bluegrass the Grateful Dead of the progressive bluegrass scene. Like the Dead, they combine several strands of American musical tradition into a sound that's best experienced in concert and leaves plenty of room for jamming, and, true to form, their live recordings are as enthusiastically received as their studio albums. In fact, members of the Dead have collaborated with Greensky at various points. And while their repertoire contains powerful original material, Greensky have also become known for transforming popular tunes from disparate genres into something all their own. Amid a batch of their own tunes, in concert they might tackle The Allman Brothers Band's "Ain't Wastin' Time No More," Prince's "1999" or Tears for Fears' "Everybody Wants to Rule the World." But whatever enters their set, and no matter the source, it ends up definitively Greensky.

Greensky Bluegrass in Concert

Kalamazoo, Michigan, is the birthplace of one of the most unique bands in progressive bluegrass. It was in 2009 that banjo player Michael Bont, mandolinist Paul Hoffman and guitarist Dave Bruzza formed the first incarnation of Greensky Bluegrass in Kalamazoo. By the time they released their debut album, Less Than Supper, in 2004, dobro man Al Bates and bass player Chris Carr had come aboard as well. Personnel changes have occurred since then, and while the original trio remains at the core of Greensky Bluegrass, they were eventually joined by bassist Mike Devol and dobro player Anders Beck in a lineup that has developed a musical language all its own. Naturally, that language draws most strongly from Greensky's bluegrass roots, but it also incorporates elements of rock, folk, jazz and more. Not only has the band long been a mainstay of the biggest bluegrass festivals, their knack for improvisational excursions has also earned them a place of honor on the jamband circuit. But then, Greensky's ability to engage a multitude of audiences has always been at the heart of the band's appeal. Previously, Greensky Bluegrass has sold out venues to capacity, like Tabernacle and House of Blues.

    Greensky Bluegrass - disappointing!

by Mando1 on 11/6/16Teragram Ballroom - Los Angeles

I am a long-time fan of the bluegrass genre, and have seen a lot of shows, and was very excited to discover Greensky this year - clearly a hot, tight band with original writing and an innovative take on a traditional style. The concert was marred less by the bands playing - a bit rambly and unfocused, and I felt like I was listening to a lot of concert filler - than by the venue and sound quality. Instrumentation was lost in the din, and there was no clarity between players - everything seemed lost in the wall of noise. You know you have trouble when even the banjo can't punch through, and the bass was overamped in a heavily distracting way ---. Lyrics and singing were garbled and indistinct and totally lost --. I don't know if the venue doesn't know sound, or the band has a deaf engineer, but it was highly unsatisfactory - we had to leave early. And - the light show was annoying and distracting and way over the top - useless movement at all times - again, distracting as hell. I will go back to the very successful CD's I have, and hope for a better live show in the future!

Greensky was good but Lil Smokies killed it.

by illshowmywayout on 11/6/16Teragram Ballroom - Los Angeles

I love Greensky Bluegrass but their energy was kinda low. On the other Lil Smokies were fun, high energy and tight. Guys, come back to LA!

    Bluegrass that rocks

by Edld on 2/1/16Paradise Rock Club - Boston

I saw these guys at the Fresh Grass music festival in North Adams, MA last September and immediately jumped on tickets to this show at the Paradise. Five fantastic musicians with a unique style that delivers a powerful performance. Crowd was energetic and clearly on the Greensky bandwagon for some time. Highlights - Windshield (intense live with enthusiastic audience participation), Demons (my favorite on their latest album), Worried About the Weather, and great covers - Gumboots (Paul Simon), Handle with Care (Traveling Wilburys) and Take It Easy (Eagles, nice closer in tribute of Frey). Several excellent jams along the way.

It's always awesome when the opener is just as good as the band you've paid to see! This was an incredible concert and I'm really grateful to have gotten to hear this excellent music in such an intimate venue.

If you have not seen Greensky Bluegrass yet, you need to do so ASAP. They were great at the Newport Music Hall, which is no surprise, as they are great no matter where you see them!

by SouthShoreChics on 12/1/15State Theatre, Kalamazoo - Kalamazoo

This was our first time seeing Greensky Bluegrass and we were very much impressed. What a show they put on! The light show was amazing and the vibe in there was something that's rare to come by. There wasn't a single soul in there that wasn't grooving! What a blast!

    Always A Treat!

by BhamKAG on 10/3/15Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

GSBG is just downright top notch! Their music is stimulating; their heart and soul display in each performance; their skills are mesmerizing; their sound is perfection; and their lighting is sensational. I call this band a mood-changer. If you're not in a good one, you will be before they're done!

    awesome band

by SunshineandSmiles on 10/2/15Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

I had a great time listening to a great band. The sound was great and the venue had lots of places to view the show. I like that my husband didn't get patted down like the last time we came to variety.

Greensky Bluegrass is one great band!

by Lobstar1 on 2/8/15Port City Music Hall - Portland

Greensky Bluegrass is a band of excellent musicians. They blend and support each other very well. Vocal harmonies abound, and the mix was awesome. I really appreciate them coming to Portland in February. I know they were all thinking - we must be nuts!

they were extremely tight as a group, and being that this was my first time seeing then live, it was especially cool that they played two sets! I would travel almost anywhere to see greensky bluegrass again.
