Green Bay Packers History

The Green Bay Packers were founded in 1919 by Indian Packing Company employee Earl "Curly" Lambeau and newspaperman George Whitney Calhoun. The Packers were an immediate success and were admitted to the American Professional Football Association in 1921, a predecessor to the NFL.

Under famed coach Vince Lombardi, the Packers dominated during the NFL's early years in the 1960s, winning the first two Super Bowl games with Hall of Fame players Bart Starr, Jim Taylor, Ray Nitschke, and Herb Adderley. The franchise saw renewed success throughout the 1990s and 2000s, including a victory at Super Bowl XXXI in 1997 under quarterback Brett Favre.

Succeeding quarterback Aaron Rodgers helped continue the Packers' reign of success, making the playoffs from 2009–2016 and a fourth championship at Super Bowl XLV in 2011. They have 33 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductees, and are the only publicly-owned major sports franchise in the United States.

Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field

Lambeau Field, named after Packers co-founder Curly Lambeau, is located in Green Bay, Wisconsin. With a capacity of 81,441, the stadium can host almost 80 percent of the city's population. Sometimes nicknamed "The Frozen Tundra," Lambeau Field has been home to some unforgettable, snowy showdowns during its tenure as the longest continuously-used NFL venue. Furthermore, touchdowns are celebrated by the famous "Lambeau Leap," a tradition where players run out of the end zone and hop into the stands to rejoice with fans.

The Packers face the Bears again in the final game of the regular season at Lambeau Field

Here’s a list of key games to keep an eye on:

  • 09/10 @ Chicago Bears
  • 09/24 vs. New Orleans Saints

  • 11/23 @ Detroit Lions
  • 12/3 vs. Kansas City Chiefs
  • 12/11 @ New York Giants
  • 12/31 @ Minnesota Vikings

The Green Bay Packers’ biggest rivals are the Dallas Cowboys, Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings, and Chicago Bears.

The Green Bay Packers have reached the Super Bowl championship five times and won the title four times (1967, 1968, 1997, and 2011). The Packers are one of 11 NFL teams to have appeared in the Super Bowl at least five times, and one of six NFL teams with at least four Super Bowl wins. The Packers also defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in the first-ever Super Bowl in 1967.

Several Green Bay Packers make a cameo in the 2015 musical/comedy Pitch Perfect 2, appearing in the film’s famed riff-off scene to perform Beyoncé’s “Bootylicious.” The players who appear in the film are offensive tackle David Bakhtiari, plus then-linebacker Clay Matthews and former offensive linemen T.J. Lang, Josh Sitton, and Don Barclay, along with quarterback Aaron Rodgers' younger brother, Jordan.

The Packers have had a waiting list for season tickets since 1960. According to a 2019 report, there are still approximately 137,000 names on the waiting list. Fans who are interested in adding their name to the waiting list should print and complete the season ticket waiting list form and mail it to:

    SRO

by ML on 10/1/23Lambeau Field - Green Bay

Found out the hard way what standing room only was. I didn’t know sports venues did this sort of thing. Not a good experience. I would not buy SRO tickets again. Too make things worse, packer staff rented us seat backs.

Hall of Fame in Green Bay

    by Byrnie on 7/22/23

I believe the Packers Hall of Fame is missing one hell of a good man. The Packers Trainer under Vince Lambardi and beyond. Please help push and honor Dominic Gentile. I’ve seen him in action on and off the field and always thought the world of him. He was dedicated the the organization and also his wonder family. I’d love to see an induction of Dom before his bride Peg meets him again.

    The Lambeau Experience

by PF - JetFan For Life on 10/20/22Lambeau Field - Green Bay

Been to Lambeau several times in the past three seasons and it just keeps getting better. Experience is a great teacher and getting inside early is to your advantage, especially for the first time visitor. The walkway around the top of the 100 sections allows you to get around within the stadium easily. Seats in the 100's i-m-o are best from rows 50-60 (i.e. the higher up the better). Only adversity faced all day was with mobile phone service in and around the stadium on game day. Next to nonexistent inside once the game started; feels like some sort of upgrade in service is needed. After that, the atmosphere inside is like none other in the league. The NFL is a great show no matter where you go, but if you are a big NFL fan, then a trip to Lambeau is a must at some point. Go Pack Go. And this from a Jets fan.

    Great but disappointing

by LadyHager on 10/19/22Lambeau Field - Green Bay

The experience through ticketmaster was good and easy. Arriving at Lambeau was fine. We enjoyed pregaming in TitleTown. Getting into the venue was easy but long lines because everyone waits until the last minute to go in. They are not kidding about bag/purse sizes-i had to throw away my mini backpack purse. Inside the stadium was clean and easy to navigate. The game just didn't turn out how we hoped.

    Fantastic!

by PDiddyAZ on 10/5/22Lambeau Field - Green Bay

Loved these seats. Would definitely sit in that section or the 300 level again. Lots of leg room and I didn’t feel smashed against other bodies on the bleachers. Super venue.
