About

Born in Waitsfield, VT, Grace Potter grew up in a family that encouraged her artistic pursuits in areas from music to theater, the latter of which she was studying at St. Lawrence University when drummer Matt Burr heard her singing at an open-mike night in 2002 and asked if she would form a band with him. She declined, but when her high-school friend and bass player Courtright Beard enrolled in their college, she reconsidered the invitation, and the three of them began to write and perform jazz-influenced songs, Potter also taking duties on the Hammond B-3. Soon, guitarist Scott Tournet joined, and the bandmembers, calling themselves Grace Potter & the Nocturnals -- thanks to their late-night practice habits -- began to think seriously about making music their careers. When Burr graduated in 2003, they decided to move back to Vermont to some land that Potter's parents owned and dedicate themselves more fully to their craft, replacing Beard (who chose to stay at school) with Bryan Dondero in the process. In 2004 they self-released their debut, Original Soul, receiving positive response and comparisons to artists like Norah Jones and early Bonnie Raitt. This in turn garnered major-label offers, but the band preferred to build its fan base by constant touring and festival appearances. Word of their electric performance spread, and shortly after their second album, Nothing But the Water -- also self-released -- came out in 2005, Grace Potter & the Nocturnals signed to Hollywood Records, with their third full-length, This Is Somewhere, hitting shelves nationwide in August 2007. In 2010, Grace Potter & the Nocturnals was released; Hollywood pulled out all the stops in order to break the band internationally. ~ Marisa Brown, Rovi

    Unforgettable

by Nearlynormalhill on 8/4/15Thompson's Point - Portland

I have seen almost every commercially successful band in my 40 plus years of attending music gigs. This was one of the best concerts I have ever attended. The entire band is truly talented. The percussion solo literally brought tears to my eyes it was phenomenal. I was amazed by the lead guitarist. The venue was perfect with a full blue moon and great weather and awesome crowd. i wish someone had told me there was no seating i would have brought a chair. This is the 4th time I have seen the Grace Potter Band and they just keep getting better and better. Keep up the good work.

UNBELIEVABLE! Grace Potter has never disappointing me, she's one of the best performers out there. The venue was great, I wish I had known I could bring small lawn chairs or a water bottle, parking was expensive.

    sin, sin, sin

by capecodcarlos on 8/4/15Thompson's Point - Portland

Lake Street Dive was everything I had hoped for. The first two songs were subject to the speakers not recognizing the voice she has, but then were adjusted. Ms. Potter. To hide that voice behind a ridiculous, over the top light show and screaming psychedelic metal rock is a sin. The following day I listened to her recording of "She's Got the Medicine that Everybody Wants" and heard this smoky, earthy, guttural, sexy voice that was completely lost in this concert.

    FABULOUS

by luvdkm on 8/4/15Thompson's Point - Portland

Grace has so much energy it's downright scary. She gave an amazing show and then came back out for an encore of about 6 more songs. I'd see her again in a heartbeat!

Grace is one hard rocker chick!

by PANZI on 8/4/15Thompson's Point - Portland

Performance was amazing - she is so energetic and unbelievably talented. Switched between playing keyboard and guitar all while dancing energetically and singing the whole time. Was center stage, about 8-9 people back from stage and it was incredible. Thompson's Point venue was great too - perfect spot for a show on a warm summer night!

    Grace Potter Rocked!

    by Melissathe6footer on 8/3/15Taft Theatre - Cincinnati

Grace Potter had it all. She danced, sang powerfully, interacted with the audience, built up the momentum as it went, switched off several guitars, had a six man band behind her including 2 drummers, a fog machine, and lights going off everywhere! People were standing instead of sitting in their seats!

Awesome show- what I could see. :(

by SJJURG on 7/31/15Susquehanna Bank Center - Camden

My husband and I always debate whether a show will be worth dealing with the idiots who pay no attention to anyone else and infringe on everyone's enjoyment. In this case I say yes- Grace and George were worth the inconvenience and annoyance of the other people in the crowd. Most people were thoughtful and considerate but many insisted on standing the entire time and dancing while bumping in to everyone around them and talking and singing loudly and off key along with the songs. I get being into the band and the experience but I paid to see and hear Grace Potter not the older lady in front of me getting her groove on with the young kids, smoking weed and drinking way too much. OH well. For some people I guess that is the way they enjoy the concert.

    Great voice

by GemmaGirl on 7/29/15Susquehanna Bank Center - Camden

I went to see George Ezra and he was great. His set was not long enough. Glad there were large screens up on the sides of the stage to view him because everyone was standing in the isle and I could not see at times from Row G. People were sitting in any open seats without the ushers caring. Two people were in our seats when we got there and they just moved up one row and stood for the whole performance. Grace Potter was high energy.

    Grace was the best.

by SNP4DACKS on 7/29/15Susquehanna Bank Center - Camden

The Whalers were a good opening. Ezra was good but not the right type of music for what should have been a totally upbeat night. Ezra has too many mellow songs. But then the new Grace, with a larger band, was fantastic. The larger band allows her to move around more, frees her from the keyboard. And her new songs are high energy.

    Amazing Grace!

by Stale on 7/28/15Taft Theatre - Cincinnati

Grace Potter never disappoints! Her vocals are outrageously cool, she knows how to pace and mix up the program. With this concert representing her "solo" outing, her new material was fresh and unique. It was awesome, though, to have her guitarist and drummer from the Nocturnals on board. The energy between the three of them definitely is a highlight and makes it fun to listen and watch. The new additions were all talented and seem to get on well. Grace is a veteran performer and knows how to work the crowd. She never left the stage even though she gave the band a break. Lots of fun, large age range in the audience. The Taft was a great venue - you could hear everything.

    Grace Potter Great

    by JNo76 on 7/28/15Taft Theatre - Cincinnati

Been to a lot of goods shows... Many Genres... & this one is Top 2 for sure... Pretty Much a tie with the Queensryche "Promised Land" Multimedia Extravaganza. I Bet if there weren't Union Restrictions she would have played all Night... Her Energy & Musicality was off the charts... And she did it all in High heels...
