GRACE JONES IN CONCERT:

When it comes to multi-hyphenate icons, legendary Jamaican performer Grace Jones stands alone. Singer, actress, model, fashion plate, Bond girl – Jones has done it all with a singular artistic vision that continues to mesmerize and enthrall as she enters her fifth decade as a performer. From her days as an androgynous disco diva to her reign as queen of the new wave and beyond, Jones has remained at the vanguard of music and fashion trends, collaborating with the best producers and designers from both fields to build a legacy of cutting-edge music and visual style that is unquestionably her own. At her incredible live performances Jones is known for stalking the stage with her signature scowl and striking severe poses in outré stagewear while she coos and purrs in her sultry contralto voice over rhythmically seductive classics like "Pull Up to the Bumper" and "I've Seen That Face Before." From the elaborate stage design to the multiple costume changes, Jones pulls out all the stops, delivering a once-in-a-lifetime concert experience that will make even the most casual fan a "Slave to the Rhythm."

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Grace Jones was born and raised in Spanish Town, Jamaica before moving to New York with her family at age 13. She was picked on in high school for her skinny frame, but at age 18 she signed a modeling contract with Wilhelmina and moved to Paris. After rising to the top of the city's fashion scene and appearing on the covers of Vogue and Elle, she signed to Island Records and released 1977's Portfolio, a collection of disco covers of Broadway classics like "Send in the Clowns" and "Tomorrow." Jones released two more disco albums in the late '70s, but by the early '80s she had moved on to the sounds of reggae and new wave. Her 1981 album Nightclubbing was a global success, cracking the Top 10 in five countries thanks to hits like "I've Seen That Face Before" and "Pull Up to the Bumper." In 1982 she released A One Man Show, a long-form music video collaboration with director Jean-Paul Goude that introduced her striking visual style to the MTV generation and earned her a Grammy nomination. Mainstream acting gigs followed, including a role opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1984 film Conan the Destroyer and a coveted Bond girl role in 1985's A View to Kill. Her chart success continued in the late '80s with the albums Slave to the Rhythm and Island Life, but by the '90s Jones was focused primarily on acting. She revived her music career after a nearly 20-year studio hiatus in 2008 with Hurricane, an acclaimed return to form produced by Ivor Guest. Since then Jones has continued to do what she does best: slay in concert with epic performances that live up to her outsized reputation.

by Ron Ozer on 6/3/23Manhattan Center Hammerstein Ballroom - New York

How can she do this at age 75? Who cares because it was astounding, funky and super fun. Costume changes acrobatics on lifts and great lighting and wind effects with a huge band. Grace honestly has not lost a step. See her!!

    Best show ever

by Goldfinger on 6/3/23Manhattan Center Hammerstein Ballroom - New York

The only negative was the show was supposed to start after 8pm and she didn’t come on till almost 9:30 that night. Great for the bar business at the Hammerstein. It was also packed and one couldn’t move. Potential fire hazard.

Grace Jones is one of our last Living LEGENDS!! she bumped and grinded her way across the stage with Grace and ease while doing a costume change for EACH song. Grace Jones is a goddess visiting us to share her power ! I flew in from Miami just for this show- so grateful.

Grace at the Hollywood Bowl Sept. 2022

    by Bowie on 5/13/23

Witnessing the icon, Grace Jones live, was like watching a mischievous child play lasciviously in the earth: molding music like red clay. Her unpredictable, pouting, glee, and giddiness kept me wrapped with attention. Me: at times on the edge of my seat. She at times on all fours or hiking her Keith haring inspired skirt up to flash her Keith Haring painted derrière. Moments of complete abandon (slamming her drumsticks into symbols already splattered on the ground) juxtapose with moments of monumental command. She asked if we wanted to go to church then sang William’s Blood and Amazing Grace. Then she had us sing. Amazing grace to her! Miss Jones, graciously, expressing gratitude for our unison, clutching her hands to her bosom, as if to take our love in. Was one such moment of monumental command and vulnerability between artist and audience. Then she proclaimed “You can’t have salvation without the sin!”

    Late but great.

by BriVan on 10/3/22Moore Theatre - Seattle

Hi. Loving Grace Jones since the 80's she is one of the few people I will give a pass on being so late to show up. Doors opened at 7:30pm. Grace appeared at 9:30pm. There was a DJ who entertained us but....... Grace was amazing. Looks great. Wonderful band. The sound in the theatre was a bit off but otherwise even with the 2 hour wait was totally worth it. She doesn't tour west coast very much so take the chance when you have it. I travelled from Vancouver BC to Seattle to catch her. Get some Grace in your face! :)

Grace Jones - Always a Treat

    by D. C. on 9/27/22Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

As always the inimitable Grace Jones gave it her all with a wonderful show. Although the overall sound was a bit muddy, Ms. Jones' talent easily rises above such distractions to provide the audience with a memorable experience. Never miss one of Ms. Jones' performance. She's a treasure and not to be missed!

    Great concert!

by Skip on 9/27/22Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

Grace delivered a terrific concert, as always. Creative set design and costuming. Good band and backup singers. Great interaction with the audience. Be aware that there will be an opening act for an hour and a half to two hours. We had a disc jockey who played electronic music who wasn’t very good.

I enjoyed the show but was VERY disappointed that we had to sit around for two hours listening to marginal (at best) DJ.

    Amazing Grace

by Dave R on 9/26/22Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

As always, Grace Jones delivered an amazing evening. Looking decades younger than her actual age along with a voice that just gets better and better, she opened the show with one of her best cover songs, Nightclubbing! Legs that go on forever, went even further with perilously tall high-heels. The audience was with her from the start, on through songs from various parts of her career, including her last release, Hurricane. She changed her outfits and appearance for each song, and kept going to the finale of Slave to the Rhythm. The only complaint for the show was the muddiness of the band's sound. Grace's voice stood out and flew over the band, but a lot of nuance was missed due to the mix. Someone who should never be missed. Hopefully a new album might be coming, and then another tour??
