GORDON LIGHTFOOT IN CONCERT:

Legendary singer-songwriter and folk-pop pioneer Gordon Lightfoot helped define the sound of '60s folk with his rootsy voice and politically-minded songs. A half a century later, Lightfoot continues to be a beacon of authenticity, taking the stage with little more than a mic and his trusty twelve-string guitar to deliver no-frills renditions of laid-back, wide-eyed classics like "Sundown" and "Sit Down Young Stranger." Joined by a talented band of backing players for his upcoming tour, Lightfoot will lead fans on a golden-toned stroll down memory lane.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Ontario-born Gordon Lightfoot got an early start in music, performing in church choirs during his youth and making his first appearance at Toronto's historic Massey Hall at just age 12. After teaching himself folk guitar in high school, Lightfoot spent some time in Hollywood studying jazz and orchestration before moving back to Toronto in 1960 and cutting his teeth in the city's coffee house music scene. Regional early-'60s hits like "Remember Me (I'm the One)" and "Negotiations" helped build his reputation as a songwriter, and before long a variety of high-profile artists -- including Elvis Presley and Peter, Paul, and Mary -- were recording versions of his songs. His biggest success as a solo artist came in the '70s, when he topped Canadian charts with four albums and scored his first US No. 1 with 1974's "Sundown." With 19 studio albums and more than five decades' worth of touring under his belt, Lightfoot brings plenty of experience with him on the road as he sets out for another round of tour dates.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKET SAY:

"Gordon was on fire. His voice was strong, and he was in a great mood."

"Great show ! Loved having the chance to hear all those wonderful hits sung with all the

feeling they were recorded with."

"Gordon Lightfoot was amazing! He played all the classics and many other gems. Mr. Lightfoot was witty, light-spirited, and very humble with his fans. The accompanying band was wonderful as well."

GL remains the master of folk.

by EStalks on 7/15/09STANLEY CENTER FOR THE ARTS - Utica

The last time I saw Gordon Lightfoot was 27 years ago at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga NY. Half way through his first song of the second set (Old Dan's Record) he stopped playing, said he couldn't go on anymore and walked off stage. After his near death illness a couple years ago, I figured that sad ending at Saratoga would be my final memory of him. When I saw that he was playing at a nearby Performance theater in Utica NY I figured, what the heck. His performance, with his old band (minus Pee Wee Charles on pedal steel) was vintage Gordon Lightfoot!! His voice, while showing some age, carried the old melodies wonderfully. His guitar playing was clean and classic. Thanks Gordon for all the great songs and a first class comeback! It should be noted that the Art Center's recent renovations gave Gordon an awesome sound. The stage background set up and lighting was fantastic. Perfect for a GL concert.

Gordon Lightfoot still going at 70

by JAustin on 7/15/09STANLEY CENTER FOR THE ARTS - Utica

It has been a lifelong dream to see Gordon Lightfoot I am only sorry i didnt see him earlier in his career. As baby boomer gordon is forever a part of my life and can do no wrong. People where cheering every song he did. He is not the same Gordon as he was when he was younger. He does not have the engery level or as powerful as a voice but he is still going strong at 70. He did cough a few times but I had the feeling even if he keeled over on stage people would have helped him back up just so they could hear his songs. . He sang all the songs that people knew . He is a living legend and I am sure he doesnt have to work but he knows that people still love him and want to hear him. God bless him.

    Gordon Lightfoot @ Utica, NY

by Mainehero on 7/15/09STANLEY CENTER FOR THE ARTS - Utica

This was the WORST concert I have ever been to. I actually left right before intermission. Lightfoot has completely lost his voice and should honestly give up touring while his fans can still appreciate him. His stage presence was stagnant. I wouldn't even give the experience one star. Sorry, Gordon.

    Gordon's Still Gold

by Showingold on 7/15/09Hard Rock Live - Biloxi

I'll grant you, Gordon Lightfoot has gotten old -- I think everyone may have been a little taken back when he stepped on stage. The fact he looked really old (even stooped a little bit it seemed) was immediately replaced, however, by a feeling of THIS IS WHAT I CAME FOR when he began to sing. He hasn't lost one bit of that silky, folksy voice that has bent my ear since I first heard it some 35 years ago. If you have ever been a fan of Gordon Lightfoot, go see him on this tour if you get a chance.

Gordon Lightfoot is an amazing musician - STILL!

by Kirkpatrick on 7/14/09Von Braun Center Concert Hall - Huntsville

My husband and I have been Gordon Lightfoot fans for many years. In fact, we've loved his music ever since we heard "If You Could Read My Mind", way back in the early 70's. Yes, I know that Mr. Lightfoot is older now, but he is still an amazing performer. If anything, his age gives new meaning to the lyrics of many of his songs. He's now "been there and done that" - truly. I guess you might say that he sings with the authority of experience, and makes it all very entertaining. After the concert, we had the privilege of meeting him. Our children (both musicians) went with us and were so very taken with both his writing and his personality. I might add that he did not change his arrangments - the voice is perhaps not as strong as in his earlier days, but it is still there. Gordon lightfoot - still a troubador.

    Gordon is Golden!

by Amphigean on 7/13/09Hard Rock Live - Biloxi

I wasn't sure what to expect for the Gordon Lightfoot show. I got tickets for a birthday gift for my husband. He had always wanted to see him. The show was outstanding. Each musician was so talented, and it was obvious everyone on the stage was having a great time. Gordon's voice was impeccable. It was a thoroughly delightful hour and a half. I was not familiar with all of the songs, however the set list was great for the coast of Mississippi. Spanish Moss is the only one song I do know that would have been a nice addition. Don't miss him if he comes by your city!

by fgordo on 7/12/09Hard Rock Live - Biloxi

Mr. LIghtfoot was a joiy t see......even at this stage of his career. Venue was good and sound was good. Only disapointment was some rude goof balls would stand in the back at the bar and talk loudly, or loudly on their cell phones. This should not be allowed. They should be asked to leave the hall if they want to make phone calls. And, loud or laughing idiots should be asked to leave. Mr. L is worthy of mores respect...as in any performer.

Gordon Lightfoot Master Folk Song Writter/Singer

by JADD on 7/12/09Von Braun Center Concert Hall - Huntsville

Gordon Lightgoot has been writing masterpieces and singing them to us for more then 50 years. His lyrics and melodies are like none other. He is a class of music, all his own. I have seen him five times over the years and he always consistantly puts on a great show. He sings a lot, talks only a little and he puts everything into the perfection of his phrasing. He never misses a word. His once powerful voice is weaker now but it does not seem to matter because he has found a way to out perform his lesser vocal strength. Gord has masterfully and very carefully found a way to sligtly rephrase certain lines to avoid vocal ranges he can no longer meet. Some of his songs were given a re-birth of sorts through these suttle phrasing changes. For many years when you went to a Gordon Lightfoot concert his live performance sounded exactly like his records but with the bigger more exciting sound of the concert hall. The most amazing thing about Gordon Lighfoot is his incerdible catalog of masterpeices covering five decades. If you don't have his albums you should get a few, then make sure you see him in concert. His concerts are always sold out and his fans really shout out their affection for this Canadian legend.

    Fading Accolades

by Ridersvoice on 7/11/09Von Braun Center Concert Hall - Huntsville

I have attended more Lightfoot concerts than probably 99% of his fans-from the early '70's to now. I've even been to Toronto to hear him in Massey Hall, which is in itself a phenomenon as it was built in 1864. I play his music constantly and I perform his music every time I perform. So yes, I am a huge Lighfoot fan - a "Lighthead" if you please. I love his style, I love his voice and I respect him as a folk music icon. His contribution has been great and will have a lasting effect on folk music. It saddens me to hear that great baritone voice fading and the lack of new song production but things change and so do his concerts. I'm not sure I will attend another as I want to remember him more clearly as he was even a few years ago. The music performance was tight as always because he and his band are very accomplished and well rehearsed. However, the decline in his voice quality signals a time for something different- Here's what I would like to see: He must have many many stories to tell about his travels and music, friends and family. I would love to hear those stories interwoven amongst fewer songs-to let people get to know him as a person-kinda ala Harry Chapin. I know he's quiet, maybe even shy, but he could rehearse his stories and really enhance his image of who he is. In short, his declining voice quality begs for something different-enhance the image and prepare his followers for the possibility that Old Gord can't do this forever. For those who have never seen him GO!! It is an historic thing and worth the effort.

    Gordon Lightfoot

by Ferdy on 7/11/09Hard Rock Live - Biloxi

The concert was incredible. My wife and I are big Gordon Lightfoot fans and this was our first concert to see him. Perhaps some of the best aspects of the concert was that the music was not too loud, and Mr. Lightfoot and his band put on a tremendous 2-hour concert without using a single word of profanity. Given the health problems that Mr. Lightfoot has experienced in the past decade, he has not lost his touch with his music. He was very down-to-earth with the audience and the fans loved him. A great concert that I would recommend to anyone.

    We have all gotten older

by gmcd on 7/11/09Von Braun Center Concert Hall - Huntsville

I must say we were glad to have seen Gordon Lightfoot- but it was a shocker to see how we have forgotten that we are all much older.....Mr Lightfoot is definitely no longer in his prime, but he did try to bring us all back to a bygone era that was filled with wonderful music. He and his music was at least close enough to take you back in time, that, we can thank Mr. Lightfoot for.

    Gord's Gold

by Billy1 on 7/11/09Hard Rock Live - Biloxi

This was the third time I've had the pleasure to see Lightfoot in the past year. Due to age, I feel we're headed toward the end of our Carefree Highway. Anyone who hasn't seen him needs to make sure they do so. He starts on time and plays everything you wanted to hear. This was such a treat. Go see him while you still can.

    seeing one of the greats...

by roninboaz on 7/11/09Von Braun Center Concert Hall - Huntsville

I grew up listening to Gordon Lightfoot's music and he remains one of my favorites. As you may know he has had some serious health issues and almost died a few years ago plus he is around 70 years old. I saw first saw him in Birmingham in 2008, his voice was weak and he appeared tired. None the less he gave the best he could and I enjoyed the evening. In 2009 when It was announced he would be in Huntsville I did not plan to go but the ability to get 3rd row center seats was too much to pass up.This time around, all i can say is Wow! What a difference a year makes. His voice was much improved, hitting the notes better and almost sounding like the 1970's records. He was much more energetic and you could he was having fun on stage. His traveling band, while small in number, do a great job. He sang many of his old songs with several newer songs. He did two full sets with one short break and an encore. This was an excellent concert. If he comes back around I will go again.

    Gordon Lightfoot still shines!!

by Sundowner on 7/11/09Von Braun Center Concert Hall - Huntsville

Mr. Lightfoot, even though he is aging and his voice isn't as bold as it used to be, still can enthrall his audience. Hey, it's the music that helps carry him through. We saw him three times years ago and last year, as well. Guess what, we'd go to see him again. A Big Fan

    Classic Lightfoot

by JaeTea on 7/11/09Von Braun Center Concert Hall - Huntsville

Let me preface this by saying I wasn't able to attend the Huntsville concert due to health concerns, but I saw Gordon LIghtfoot at the Alabama Theatre in Birmingham on the 2008 tour. I've been listening to Lightfoot since I got The "Sit Down Young Stranger" album in 1971 (it was later re-released as "If You Could Read My Mind"). Over the years I bought every album, including the early '60s releases, and learned and performed dozens of his songs during my career as a folksinger. Every album was eagerly anticipated and every time there was a concert anywhere near where I was living, I went. Although he is older now and, due to his recent health problems, appears not quite as robust as in past years, Lightfoot still sounds like Lightfoot - fantastic. On the first couple of songs, his voice sounded a bit thin but as he warmed up, the vocals began to ring as strong and vibrant as ever. His band performs so tightly it is as if they are one person - they are completely in sync with one another .Many times a band that has played together will sound tired and impatient and give off a feeling of "let's just get it over with already". After probably playing the songs hundreds of times, these fellows sound as fresh and enthusiastic as ever. The set list included the hits of course, "Sundown, If You Could Read My Mind, The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," etc. but also included a few I had never heard him perform live before. For the first time in the many concerts I attended he sang my all-time favorite "If Children Had Wings" - I was entranced and delighted. The lyrics of "All the Lovely Ladies" says, "heaven can be yours just for now" and that night it truly was. Thank you Gordon for all these years of wonderful music, I look forward to many more.

    Really sad...

by Minstrel on 7/11/09Von Braun Center Concert Hall - Huntsville

2 stars are just because I love so many of Gordo's songs and his songwriting talent. Wow, I was really not expecting Gordo to sound and look so old. It really took me aback. I took my dad as an early Father's Day present and felt really bad about it. His voice was really bad. He played a lot of songs I had never heard. Even my dad didn't know many of them. My dad played Gordon's stuff a lot when I was little and I became a fan in my 20's when I began to play guitar. So we know a lot of his songs. We kept shouting for him to play "Affair" and he wouldn't. The last time we saw him 10 years ago, the same thing happened. That's an amazing story-song and I am puzzled as to why he's dead set against playing it. Gordon must have a lot of bills to pay because he really should consider calling it quits. I really felt pity and was embarrassed for him. I was surprised at how forgiving and kind the audience was. I expected to see many walk out, but they didn't. The tickets were very expensive as well. I paid over $100 for the two tickets and we in the upper level of the concert hall. I was impressed/surprised he did Wreck due to the length and lyrics. Again, was very sad for my dad because Gordo is one of his favorites. I really hate that he was in such bad shape for the last time Dad will see him.

    Gordon Lightfoot

by Bucky424 on 7/11/09Von Braun Center Concert Hall - Huntsville

I saw Gordon Lightfoot in Orlando in 1983. He was awesome then. 26 years older and with health issues his voice was weaker, but just to see him and hear him for what is probably the last time was well worth the price. Only a true Gordon Lightfoot fan would have appreciated his effort.

Gordon Lightfoot - Trip Down Memory Lane

by wareglno1 on 7/11/09Von Braun Center Concert Hall - Huntsville

Gordon Lightfoot played selections from almost every decade. A show for anyone that's ever heard him on the radio growing up.
