Friendly and professional, but not melodic

by savorconcerts on 3/12/16Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

This big band is BIG. Four lead trumpets, three trombones, three saxophonists, three percussionists, two guitarists, and a pianist. The performers are masters with their instruments, and transmit energy and happiness. But be prepared for a wall of sound. Very few rising emotions, building to crescendo. Almost all songs involve all of the instruments playing at full volume, all at the same time, and many have the exact same tempo. The uniformity begins to wear. When solos occur, they are showpieces for the artists' skills, and not necessarily emotive. The songs are vehicles for professionalism. I may not be skilled enough to fully appreciate. If you are a musician, this would probably be more enjoyable, because the leader's inclusiveness and clear regard for his band is inspiring.

Harris' vocals front, but Eric Reed steals show

by savorconcerts on 12/12/15Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

Our first time seeing the Allan Harris quintet. Harris has good stage presence, and colors his vocals for some variety, though without the range or originality of some of the best. Erik Reid (spelling?) on piano and acting as emcee stole the show. There's depth in his interpretations, and he seems to transform himself into a new person to match the mood of each piece he plays. The drummer, too, was in the groove. Bass cellist was hard to hear. Sax player Jones was terrific too, but only played two songs, so it was really more of a quartet.

Tierney Sutton is true talent - amazing voice!

by JazzEarz on 11/14/15Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

Tierney Sutton is one of the best female jazz vocalists currently active on the jazz scene - - touring and producing music. Her voice is a trained instrument. She has amazing control over her voice - both in terms of tone and volume. Her fresh interpretations of jazz standards is unparalleled. Her collaboration with Shelly Berg was perfection. You could see and hear how these two artists really enjoy working together. Her performance is authentic - - and comes from a place of true love for the music and respect for her craft. She is a beautiful, highly-skilled performer and it is a real treat to see and hear her sing. She is a uniquely talented delight!

    A Pleasure

by LeslieScott on 11/14/15Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

Here were artists at the top of their games. Shelly Berg's passion for his music combined with his beautiful musical phrases and melodic combinations are simply a pleasure to enjoy. He is also the perfect accompanist for a jazz vocalist such as Tierney Sutton, whose clear, cool tones have never been better. I especially enjoyed "Isn't It A Pity," a rather obscure soulful ballad by the Gershwins. All these selections were spot on, allowing the listener to sit back, relax, and appreciate the sound of good music.

    Absolute Jazz Wizardry

by DavidT9 on 4/13/15Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

Dr Lonnie Smith - one of the great Hammond B3 players put on a masterful performance. From swing to funk to outer space, his trio played a wide range of styles. His sidemen are fantastic. Guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg is scary good and the energy level was through the roof.

    Dr, Lonnie Smith

by Felipo on 4/11/15Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

A unique and talented jazz organist. He was cooking the first half of the show - hard driving and funky as expected. After the intermission he toned everything down, except for Favorite Things where he lost the audience completely with his arrangement. I don't understand why artists build up their audiences only to let them down with bad choices of songs at the end of their shows. He should have had the audience on their feet and screaming, instead of having people walking out before the end.

    not what i expected!

by treboruno on 4/11/15Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

If you like Jazz standards/american songbook tunes played on the Hammond organ you might be disappointed when this cool jazz style version of "the enigma wrapped in a turban" shows up.

Kaeshammer - hard to pronounce but great performer

by RGO2 on 3/21/15Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

Until we saw this performance we had no knowledge of Michael Kaeshammer Trio but we love Jazz. So when we received notification from the Jazz Society that he was going to perform locally, we decided to go. We are so glad we did - it was a fantastic show. Michael Kaeshammer is sooooooooo talented and he is also very personable. We loved that after the show he came down off the stage and interacted with the audience.

As a former musician this is one of the best concerts I have seen in years. Please try to book more mainstream artists like Carl Saundrers, Andy Martin, Bob McChesney, Gordon Goodwins big phat band, Eddie Daniels, Tom Harrell, etc. Thanks for a great show.

    Loved Shelly Berg

by Felipo on 1/17/15Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

Shelly really feels the music. You can see his whole body grooving with the sound and beat. He's really entertaining to listen to and watch. His bass player was also exceptional.

Bill Allred and the band were "First Class"

by RosePointe on 11/15/14Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

My wife and I attended our first Bill Allred Classic Jazz Band concert and it was amazing. Not only were they great musicians they were exciting and engaging to watch. One of the take aways from the event was the fact that you just can't find this type of professionalism and talent every where. This group was outstanding and I would highly recommend to others.
