    Godspell for the 21st Century

by CEMAProfessor on 2/11/14Milwaukee Theatre - Milwaukee

The songs are the same, the performance on each was outstanding, but a number of the references were to things modern day, making the musical also funny - particularly the first act

    High energy!

    by D3s1ra3 on 2/11/14Milwaukee Theatre - Milwaukee

The cast was excited and full of energy. I took my 14 year old daughter she said her cheeks hurt because she was smiling thru the whole show. The entire cast was so talented and we really had a great time.

    Godspell was great

by MknhmJ on 2/10/14Milwaukee Theatre - Milwaukee

I had seen Godspell done a couple of times before, and this was fantastic! They brought it up to date with cell phones, and modern songs and dance. My family loved it. I still have the songs stuck in my head.

Terrific Cast Could Not Overcome Poor Acoustics

by TrainzGuy on 2/10/14Milwaukee Theatre - Milwaukee

I have long-enjoyed Godspell since the 1970's. Unfortunately the small crowd and scalloped drapes throughout the empty Milwaukee Theatre made this venue one of the worse I have ever experienced. Frankly, the "updated" songs, including a rap number, was awful - consider one of the Von Trapp kids rapping in the Sound of Music and you'll get my point. The lyrics were so muddied by the poor environs that one simply could not follow the bridging numbers nor the dialogue, to boot. The best part of the evening was the Fish Fry at Zak's - absolutely wonderful - and are stark contrast to the inedible dish served as Godspell It was God-awful.

A feel good play for any age

by RockingPenguin on 1/30/14Lyell B Clay Concert Theatre - Morgantown

I was sitting front row center so many might think my review is biased and in a way it is. I was wearing a tie dyed shirt and bandanna, its probably why they cast dragged me onstage to play Lazarus giving me queue cards (one to play dead) I had the most wonderful time of my life. Even if it would have been nosebleed seats it is hard not to have a good time at this kind of a show. I am not even close to being religious anymore. That being said this gives a modern approach on the bibles writings on when Jesus was on earth preaching to his disciples. But this play is anything but preachy. It is a feel good play injected with a lot of music and style that everyone needs to see sometime in their life. This is the 3rd time I have seen this play in different decades. The first when I was a kid in the late 60's. The 2nd time in the early 90's. Each time a different spin on the play that brings a smile to your face. If it comes in your area. GO. You will not be disappointed. I promise you.

MY ENTIRE FAMILY LOVED THIS SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Even my 15 yr. old was having a good time! I performed in Godspell when I was in the 8th grade. Most of the music was different, but it was very entertaining. The amount of energy on that stage was just incredible!! We left with a light heart and smiles all around!!

    Godspell was very well done.

    by Cowlady1 on 1/29/14Hershey Theatre - Hershey

I saw Godspell many many years ago and the updates they had done with the play made it a "new" experience. Like seeing it for the first time again.

    Excellent Presentation

by Ableman on 1/29/14Hershey Theatre - Hershey

This was a Christmas present to my wife as it is one of her favorite plays. The performance was excellent and it was the first time my wife truly understood the presentation of the song Babel. The updates were very good and they made it relate to the audience in Hershey.

    Godspell was rotten

    by skye0925 on 1/29/14Hershey Theatre - Hershey

Godspell came out in 1971, when I was 21. They've tried to modernize it which made it terrible with cell phones ringing in the 1st act (Cell phones didn't come out till the 80"s. One song was done as rap. Clothes were today's clothes not the clothes of the era.

    Fabulous performers!

    by iup79 on 1/29/14Hershey Theatre - Hershey

A high-energy and emotional performance. Our only complaint is that the sound was too low for some of the singers' mikes - we could not hear the lyrics clearly.

    Awesome everything!!

by slkWV on 1/28/14Lyell B Clay Concert Theatre - Morgantown

I debated buying these tickets after reading some less-than-wonderful reviews of the show, but I have no idea what those bad reviews were even talking about now. The whole production was wonderful, the actors were upbeat and engaged, and I left in a better mood than when I came in. The show itself was very well done, and the actors were very talented. If I HAD to have a complaint, it would be that the finale was choreographed, which took away from the emotional impact. Jesus himself left a bit to be desired, but he was talented in his own right. I took my boyfriend to the show as his Christmas present (he played Jesus in our high school production), and after it was over, I asked him to rate it. He gave it 10/10, as do I.

The weather in Morgantown that day was extremely cold and snowy. What is usually about an hour and 15 minute drive for us turned into about 2 1/2 hours on the way home because of the hazardous road conditions. However, despite all that, I was thrilled to have gone! The show was very professionally done. The cast, musicians, costumes, lighting, sound, and overall energy of the play combined to make it a very enjoyable evening. There was simply a tremendous amount of talent on that stage and in this production which translated into a thoroughly enjoyable theatre experience!

    GodSpell Was Absolutely Amazing~

by Babagirls on 1/27/14Shubert Theater - New Haven

I have seen Godspell several times before and was excited to bring my 10 and 14 year old granddaughters to see it - and they were awestruck! The actor who portrayed Jesus was charismatic and captured the pure Joy of Jesus perfectly. We all loved this show - it was one of the best shows I have ever seen. I wish we could have seen this specific show with the actors again - they were perfect!

    Outstanding performances by all!!!

by PinotNut on 11/20/13Peabody Opera House - St. Louis

While I was already familiar with much of the music from Godspell, I was taken in by the way the music was done with an artistic bent. They were the same songs, but done differently and very enjoyable. Each cast member was able to establish their own connection with the audience. All members had great voices and were cast well in their parts.

Godspell was so-so, THIS time around!

by KatontheKeys on 11/20/13Peabody Opera House - St. Louis

I saw Godspell in the 70's and it was...amazing. Very "hippie", in nature, which was the time were all living in. This show had some wonderful performers, but 1. The updated parts bothered me. I get it. You want to keep it fresh. But it felt foreign. I also didn't understand what the opening scene had to do with the show. 2. Either the actors weren't enunciating properly OR they were blowing through their lines TOO fast. Both my daughter and I had trouble hearing 1/3 of what was said. And this is important stuff; the Bible's lessons. 3. It seemed as though everyone in the show was rushing...even anticipating their lines and therefor forfeiting the timing that would have gotten them much bigger responses. It is a fabulous show; just a little disappointing. I think it missed it's really powerful impact though.
