Exceeded expectations
by M. S. on 8/23/19Ace of Spades - SacramentoI had never seen anything quite like Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Their music started out very quietly with one person playing violin then slowly built to a crescendo as other members of the group joined one by one until all 8 members of the primary group were playing, at one point joined by a 9th member playing saxophone. They played for almost 2 hours then, one by one, each member waved and walked off the stage, while leaving their instruments hooked up to their electronic boards and playing in loops. (I've seen Sigur Ros do something similar.) The concert was so entertaining, it didn't feel like it had been 2 hours and I wish it could have gone on longer. It's difficult to describe the music itself - much of the sound was heavily modified with electronics - but their fans will know the sound. If I ever have an opportunity to see Godspeed You! Black Emperor, I will certainly do so.
