Review of Glenn Hughes @ The Queen - Wilmington DE
by DrBrookenstein on 9/3/18The Queen - WilmingtonRating: 5 out of 5I got a chance to see the legendary DEEP PURPLE bassist/vocalist Glenn Hughes at the Queen in Wilmington. Glenn still sounds GREAT vocally, after all of these years!!
Glenn Hughes and the band hit the ground running at 8:05pm, with the hard rocker “Stormbringer”, with the heavy bassline & the perfect high-tenor/falsetto vocal styling of Glenn, along with a red-hot guitar solo by Jeff!! “Might Just Take Your Life” was another smoker of a hard rock song. “Sail Away” started off with a wicked guitar intro...I loved the high-pitch screams of Glenn on this one! The keyboardist (sorry--I don’t remember his name) did a grimy, nasty organ solo that evolved into Jimi Hendrix’s “Who Knows”, featuring some kick-butt drumming by Eddie.
“You Fool No One” was great, including a pyrotechnic guitar solo that melted the faces of the Deep Purple fans, some standout organ riffing, a snippet of “High Ball Shooter”, and a return to the song “You Fool No One”, ending with such a powerful drum solo that sent tremors of 8.5 magnitude on the Richter scale throughout the downtown Wilmington area!!
“You Keep on Moving” started with a nice basslines and beautiful falsetto harmonies by Glenn--the song started off soft, but went into nasty hard-rock territory, including a heavy organ solo! Glenn started playing wah-wah basslines...it was just PLAIN FUNKY...the funky basslines segued into “Getting Tighter”. “Getting Tighter” was just plain metal-funk MADNESS and the wah-wah bass solo in the middle was funkier than 1,000 wet farts! “Mistreated” was slower paced, but still a lethal smoker of a rock song, featured some funky basslines and passionate vocals/screams by Glenn!!
“Smoke on the Water” was the ultimate DEEP PURPLE head-banger! Every fan was in heaven as they got into this heavy-rock feast!! “Georgia on My Mind” was good, with the falsetto vocals.
The encore featured the popular ode to automobiles, “Highway Star”--which returned the pace of the show to head-banging rock...the foundation of the Queen shifted considerably under the punishing force of Glenn’s band!!! The fans joined in with a little sing-along. The final show of the song was the pyrotechnic rocker “Burn”. The energy in the room was so hot that it set the Queen afire!! DAY-UMM!!!! (I can hear the fire trucks in the distance) The lethal force of Glenn Hughes & company finally subsided at 9:50pm. When I left, the Queen was in desperate need of repair!
