About

Former RNZB Artistic Director Ethan Stiefel’s classic production of Giselle first toured New Zealand in 2012, to critical acclaim and sell-out audiences. Subsequently performed by the RNZB in China, the USA, the UK and Italy, and turned into a feature film by New Zealand director Toa Fraser, this is a welcome opportunity for New Zealand audiences to again see this hauntingly beautiful ballet.

In a remote village, the beautiful and innocent Giselle is courted and captivated by a mysterious stranger. When he is revealed as Count Albrecht, betrothed to another, Giselle, broken hearted, descends into madness and death.

In the forest, the Wilis, vengeful ghosts of jilted brides, meet to greet their recently arrived sister: Giselle, who rises from her grave to join their ranks. Albrecht arrives to mourn, and the Wilis exact their revenge, compelling him to dance until he dies from exhaustion. Giselle shields him from their fury, until the first light of day brings the promise of forgiveness and redemption.

    Tampa Ballet Company lacking

by BASC on 11/14/17U.S. Cellular Center Asheville - Asheville

The company danced Giselle but was clearly not up to the task. Over acting in the first act was very distracting. The male lead was heavy footed and looked too old for the part. In the second act a few members of the corp were not keeping time with the rest of the dancers. That said, second act was much better than the first act. This was my husband’s introduction to this ballet and sadly was not a positive experience. I have followed Ballet since a very young age. I recognize the immense amount of work and dedication that goes into this art. I think that perhaps the company might wish to rethink this particular ballet.

The performance was amazing and the music was great. The venue wasn't very impressive and although we were in the 4th row it was hard to see

    Giselle

by Kkashhhhhh on 4/25/17Clowes Memorial Hall - Indianapolis

Please understand that a i am not a ballet expert. That being said, I enjoyed the ballet, the dancer who was Giselle did a fabulous job, as did the dancer who played Albrecht. BUT, the village scene was soooooo long, i got bored, as did my teenagers. I enjoyed the second act better than the first, the Wilis were fascinating, beautiful costumes although i was expecting long tulle dresses rather than mid length (silly aside but..) Queen Myrthas facial expression was perfect.

First time I attend a Ballet show. I must say it was what I expected and more. The seats were good, not too far from the stage not to close to be able to appreciate the stage. The organization and synchronization of the entire group was amazing. I would definitely recommend this show.

    Underwhelmed

by twinkletoes2 on 11/4/15Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

The dancers were fantastic. But the lack of live orchestra really made the experience less enjoyable. For the price of our tickets ($65, not including taxes), we expected a full, professional and stellar performance.. not an underwhelming production with an introduction soliciting donations. The whole experience, except for the talented dancers, felt very amateur.

Perfect!! Just don't sit in the front @ Royce Hall

by IM400 on 11/4/15Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

Well this ballet is beautiful! I sat in the very front of Royce Hall (row AA) and I couldn't ever see the dancers' feet; That was the bad part about the venue. So if you go to see a show at the UCLA campus, sit 6-10 rows back from the front. Other than not being able to see their feet, I loved the ballet! It was beautiful and the dancers all had their own unique traits. Giselle really was a wonderful show. I took my parents and they loved it too, even if we couldn't see below the dancers' ankles.

    Fantastic

Thoroughly enjoyed this ballet. The WW2 setting, lighting, costumes were phenomenal. Not to mention the choreography and skill level of the dancers.

    Michael Pink's Giselle was amazing

by amom on 4/1/15Uihlein Hall Marcus Center - Milwaukee

The setting is completely re-imagined...instead of a peasant village and a rogue young noble, Giselle lives in a WWII ghetto and Albrecht is in the oppressing military. The vengeful spirits are not the ghosts of unrequited lovers, but ghosts of murdered civilians, who torment Albrecht -before Giselle's ghost saves him. A tragic and redeeming story with exceptionally beautiful music. Michael Pink's interpretation, the choreography, and the music from the MSO, were all extraordinary.

    Giselle?

by 90998TL on 3/31/15Uihlein Hall Marcus Center - Milwaukee

The interpretation of Giselle was unique and creative but I think the ballet should have used some other title than Giselle. To me it really wasn't Giselle. I generally like Michael Pink's work but this time there was too much play acting and not enough dance. I go to the ballet for dance and didn't get what I went for. So all in all it was a bit disappointing for me. It won't stop me from seeing Pink's work in the future as I really do a appreciate his work.

    Inspired!

by Shanelpottery on 3/30/15Uihlein Hall Marcus Center - Milwaukee

Michael Pink's Giselle far exceeded my expectations!! I felt as though I was watching a paining, not a single moment was short of perfection. I was nearly brought to tears a few moments / not from the story line itself, but from the beauty of the movement! The male and female ghosts were like moving sculptures. Such a clever decision! My 11 yr old daughter (who dances ballet) was there, and although this version of Giselle takes place in world war 2, she said it was her favorite ballet ever seen live. I wish there was more of it, it felt like it went too quickly. I completely get what Michael pink was doing with this one- it worked!

Giselle is one of my favorite ballets and this version was absolutely stunning! It was thought provoking and touched my heart. Sitting close to the stage really added to the experience.

    Breathless

by Obbo on 11/5/14San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

The incredible performance was just plain magical. Giselle's death brought tears to my eyes and her dances with Albrecht in the woods together was hauntingly beautiful.

    Giselle was wonderful!

by LIZARDF on 11/5/14San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

My daughter and I recently attended the performance of Giselle at the San Diego Civic Theatre; the ballet performance was spectacular. All of the dancers were trained formally and performed very well in my opinion. I enjoyed seeing all of their wonderful moves and we were only five rows away so we were able to see facial expressions and the sweat forming on their brows. The only problem I had was with a group of teenagers who were there to do some kind of review and their chaperone allowed them to chat off and on throughout the performance. They were seated in the row ahead, beside and two rows behind us. One kept clicking their pen on/off and the constant chatting was annoying. I wish the ushers had been more aware of what was going on but I could not think of a way to ask them to be quiet without yelling at them and interrupting the performance. Next time I hope when we attend, there are no teenagers near us. The prices for the drinks and snacks are too expensive and next time I will smuggle something in my purse rather than pay such high prices. Parking was ten dollars too since we used the structure. The performance was lovely and I enjoyed seeing Giselle for the first time ever.
