Gesaffelstein on Tour

As a performer, the French-born Gesaffelstein takes his cues from the meticulous stage setups favored by peers such as Daft Punk. Although the techno- and electro-leaning artist has been known to wear a mask or sparkly jacket onstage — and a dazzling light show is also part of his arsenal — his sets are always full of slinky, mesmerizing music that's both thought-provoking and danceable. Gesaffelstein has appeared at Governors Ball and at Coachella in 2015 and 2019, although the latter performance especially stood out. The DJ performed in front of structures coated in the cutting-edge, light-absorbing material Vantablack, which made the stage look pitch-black and wowed the crowd.

Gesaffelstein in Concert

Gesaffelstein — real name Mike Lévy — had the good fortune of being born and raised in France, a hotbed for futuristic electronic music. As a teenager, Lévy started producing, and he released his first EP, 2008's Vengeance Factory, before age 21. A steady string of EPs followed before Gesaffelstein issued his debut full-length, 2013's Aleph, via Bromance Records and Skrillex's label, OWSLA. In November 2018, Gesaffelstein inked a record deal with Columbia Records, which released the 2019 full-length Hyperion and the Novo Sonic System EP. Both releases take a dark, slinky approach to his usual minimalist funk and techno.

In addition to nurturing his own work, Gesaffelstein also thrives on collaboration. Early in his career, he remixed songs for Cassius, Miss Kittin, Moby and Lana Del Rey. In 2013, he broke through into the mainstream by producing two songs on Kanye West's Yeezus ("Black Skinhead" and "Send It Up"). Two years later, he teamed up with Jean-Michel Jarre for the single "Conquistador." Gesaffelstein also featured on and coproduced/cowrote two songs on the Weeknd's 2018 EP, My Dear Melancholy. In 2019, the hip-hop/R&B star returned the favor and collaborated with Gesaffelstein on the gold-selling single "Lost in the Fire," which appears on Hyperion.

Gesaffelstein overcomes audio issues at Aragon

by Major on 11/19/19Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom - Chicago

Audio cut off to the right side of the auditorium halfway through the set. He still put on a great show. ARAGON FIGURE UR AUDIO OUT.

    Good set, could be better

by touchdown on 11/19/19Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom - Chicago

The allure of the blackout was missed with the venue and seeing the back stages. Should have also brought in a local Chicago artists as the first opener as the show was quite short. Gesaffelstein was great though.

Great artist, venue policy needs to change

by L. R. on 11/19/19Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom - Chicago

Just wish he played longer! Venue is amazing. One of the more recent Aragon shows when it was not over-packed from over-selling tickets but still wish I had a little more room to dance.

    It was alright overall

by Technogirl on 11/13/19Petco Park | Park at the Park - San Diego

The event ended way too early in my opinion. I was hoping they’d have even a closer or something but 8:30pm it was done. Gessafelstein played some good tracks and it was a decent sound system but I felt that the event as a whole was just too short

    was fun

by H. on 11/13/19Petco Park | Park at the Park - San Diego

wish it were longer, had more opening acts or something. doors opened kinda late, then it was weird just sitting around with nothing at first then someone came on at it was good. The line situation was better for Petco Park this time, as there were more gates to go through.

    Mind Blowing Performance

by Hogpoo on 11/13/19Petco Park | Park at the Park - San Diego

Pretty sure that concert registered on the US Richter Scale and that NASA could see the lights from this concert in space. Sound was incredible his arrangement of the tracks and on the fly tweaks mixed with that stage and lighting show just about made my head explode. Long love the dark prince!

    $60 for an hour set?

by Ashley on 11/13/19Petco Park | Park at the Park - San Diego

The music and production was incredible HOWEVER.... charging such an exorbitant price for only a 60 minute set felt like I was being robbed! This has turned me off so much that I will never pay to see Gessafelstein again!
