About

Gesaffelstein on Tour

As a performer, the French-born Gesaffelstein takes his cues from the meticulous stage setups favored by peers such as Daft Punk. Although the techno- and electro-leaning artist has been known to wear a mask or sparkly jacket onstage — and a dazzling light show is also part of his arsenal — his sets are always full of slinky, mesmerizing music that's both thought-provoking and danceable. Gesaffelstein has appeared at Governors Ball and at Coachella in 2015 and 2019, although the latter performance especially stood out. The DJ performed in front of structures coated in the cutting-edge, light-absorbing material Vantablack, which made the stage look pitch-black and wowed the crowd.

Gesaffelstein in Concert

Gesaffelstein — real name Mike Lévy — had the good fortune of being born and raised in France, a hotbed for futuristic electronic music. As a teenager, Lévy started producing, and he released his first EP, 2008's Vengeance Factory, before age 21. A steady string of EPs followed before Gesaffelstein issued his debut full-length, 2013's Aleph, via Bromance Records and Skrillex's label, OWSLA. In November 2018, Gesaffelstein inked a record deal with Columbia Records, which released the 2019 full-length Hyperion and the Novo Sonic System EP. Both releases take a dark, slinky approach to his usual minimalist funk and techno.

In addition to nurturing his own work, Gesaffelstein also thrives on collaboration. Early in his career, he remixed songs for Cassius, Miss Kittin, Moby and Lana Del Rey. In 2013, he broke through into the mainstream by producing two songs on Kanye West's Yeezus ("Black Skinhead" and "Send It Up"). Two years later, he teamed up with Jean-Michel Jarre for the single "Conquistador." Gesaffelstein also featured on and coproduced/cowrote two songs on the Weeknd's 2018 EP, My Dear Melancholy. In 2019, the hip-hop/R&B star returned the favor and collaborated with Gesaffelstein on the gold-selling single "Lost in the Fire," which appears on Hyperion.

    Coachella 2019(?)

    by Elle on 2/24/23

I didn’t know what to expect, but my friends from Amsterdam wanted to go so I went to the tent he was performing at. I was totally sober- and was blown awe by his set. I feel like I just stood there and took the music. Go with no expectations, and have an experience

    Overpriced and underplayed

by laura on 11/30/19Coca-Cola Roxy - Atlanta

Set only lasted until 10:15 though website listed 11 as end time. Drinks were way overpriced and watered down. Venue very small and dirty and soon as I ordered a drink unaware show would be ending they kicked everyone out so wasted an $18 beverage. I love Gesaffelstein and most of his sets are only 75 minutes so I am not mad at artist but venue needs to update website to reflect actual times. We will not be returning to the coca-cola roxy venue, the previous one was much better. Cool area though at the battery in atlanta.

    My first Techno Concert

    by A. Y. Hermosillo on 11/25/19Kings Theatre - Brooklyn

I walked right into the Kings Theatre and out my items into the security box, and went through the scanner. I had no contraband ! So I stepped in and was in awe about the Victorian style theatre . I saw the merchandise stand and purchased a Gesaffelstein shirt the material is awesome. Overall I had an amazing time and even the people were cool especially two young woman.

    Not as good as advertised

by Dev on 11/23/19House of Blues Boston presented by Cricket Wireless - Boston

The music was repetitive. Sound quality was good but the full set was not engaging and felt like a couple of songs were on loop. The strobe lights were very bright blinding and not optimized for a smaller venue. Overall, not a great experience.

    Great performance, shortest show ever

by Lmko on 11/19/19Petco Park | Park at the Park - San Diego

The tickets and the message before the event said that it would last until 10pm. I showed up at 7, ready for a dance party. Ges came on a little after 7:30, played a great set, and then we were abruptly ushered out at 8:40pm. And all drink sales were cut off at 8pm. Definitely not the dance party I was expecting, and definitely not worth the $60 price tag.

    Music and FX were awesome

by C. T. on 11/19/19Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom - Chicago

Show was spectacular. I've been waiting for years to see Geafflestein live ever since I first listened to him when his debut album dropped. I'm so happy I went. Unfortunately, the speakers cut out intermittently during the show so that sucked, but I think that was a venue issue more than an artist issue. Other than that, it was so awesome.

by Akv on 11/19/19Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom - Chicago

The most powerful elegant show ever!!! Ever since last year that I saw Gesaffelstein appear with his black suit On “reset” I thought it was the coolest thing ever, but now!!!!! Now I saw him live with and ever since I did I feel omnipotent. That show was the best ever!!!!!
