After more than 30 years of a lifestyle that often required lots of time on the road, country legend George Strait has saddled up for what he says will be his final tour, a two-year outing dubbed The Cowboy Rides Away Tour.
More than 20 farewell concerts take place between January and May of 2014, and the shows -- many of which will feature a big-name special guest such as Jason Aldean, Eric Church, Martina McBride, or Sheryl Crow -- are proving to be hot tickets as fans celebrate the storied career of the country mainstay. He announced his retirement from the road during a September 2012 press conference in Nashville, and played more than 20 farewell shows during early 2013.
Strait doesn't plan to ride into the sunset -- he's just done with long tours. He recently renewed his deal with MCA Records, so he'll keep releasing new music and plans to also play select concert dates in the future. But grueling trips aboard the tour bus are in his rearview mirror.
After the Urban Cowboy ethos dominated country music in the late '70s, Strait emerged in the early '80s with his take on classic country stylings, and is often credited with paving the way for other neo-traditionalist superstars like Garth Brooks, Dwight Yoakam, and Randy Travis.
Strait's catalog includes timeless hits like "Amarillo by Morning," "All My Ex's Live in Texas," "Love Without End, Amen," and "I've Come to Expect it From You."
A 2006 inductee into the Country Music Hall of Fame, Strait's remarkable career has included a record 60 No. 1 songs on the country chart. He holds many other country sales records, including most No. 1 albums and most gold, platinum, and multi-platinum albums. Only Elvis Presley and The Beatles have more combined gold and platinum albums in their catalogs.
A native of Poteet, Texas, south of San Antonio, Strait grew up in neighboring Frio County. He first took up music in high school as a member of a rock garage band. After a stint in the Army, he earned an Agriculture degree from Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos while playing in a bar band that performed around central and south Texas.
Strait signed with MCA Records in 1981, after Erv Woolsey, who ran one of the bars Strait's band played, urged Nashville talent scouts to check him out. Woolsey went on to become Strait's manager.
Great concert but I think Stapleton was better this time
The concert was outstanding! Little Big Town, and Chris Stapleton were super additions to George’s unforgetable performance. The only downside to the concert was the lack of competent traffic control when it was over!!
What an amazing concert! George Strait did not disappoint. I think he performed for 3 hours straight. It was unbelievable! Little Big Town and Chris Stapleton were also fantastic. What a stunning lineup of artists. It was everything I hoped it would be.
By far the best concert ever. Seeing george strait in concert was on a bucket list of items for my wife and I. George strait is truly the king of country and an unforgettable moment for my wife and I. I hope to be able to see him again before he hangs his hat for good.
great show. very helpful staff. met great people there.
The concert was phenomenal. Little Big Town, Chris Stapleton, and George Straight, were all great! George doesn’t seem to have lost a beat and put on a fabulous show. That said, Everbank stadium was not a good venue. Very dated and not crowd friendly. Not sure how it continues as an NFL stadium.
Great concert, and bought tickets from a friend transfer was easy
Awesome event!! Loved Little Big Town!!! Chris Stapleton was great!! Solid music through his whole session!! George was George!!! A living legend!!! Did miss hearing “I Cross My Heart”!!!
This was my third time seeing GS in concert and this was the best one yet. We had pretty good seats and everyone around us was on good behavior. First time to see Chris Stapleton and he was fabulous too!
I can’t say enough about how great this concert was! Having two awesome opening acts like Little Big Town and Chris Stapleton was fantastic. George was wonderful, the show was fabulous and we all had a great time. Best concert I’ve attended in years.
Little big town, chris stapleton, and george strait were absolutely fantastic but it was held in the Huge Jax Jaguars Football stadium the acoustics are terrible and i paid a lot for seats where i couldn’t even see the bands! Had to watch them on the tvs. We also like to dance and the people behind us got mad that we were standing One lady screamed at us even after we moved away from her!!! George is still going strong his voice is beautiful at 71. and he played until 11:45pm! We made the best of it but miss the old days of small intimate venues where people can enjoy dancing to the music!
The 3 bands were spectacular. Opening with Little Big Town was a fabulous start. Followed by Chris Stapleton who was awesome. Finally, the incredible and crowd pleasing George Strait gave a terrific performance.
Loved every moment! The experience was phenomenal! My bucket list checked off! I love George Strait!
Best experience yet! I always buy tickets through ticketmaster and never have any issues!! The concert itself was amazing and like no other!
It was a fantastic show and George still has it after all these years. He is a humble and generous performer.
Fantastic concert! So much talent in one concert. And they all focused on music with not a lot of talk. Define a top 5 of my favorite concerts ever!
3 amazing performers in one night! Just got better and better
Our first time here for a concert and the Venue was great sound quality very good the seats and local great the parking was good
Fantastic. I hate people and wanted to trip every single idiot that had to get up 64 thousand times during the show. And my knees were cramped trying to sit in the seat but the show itself was spectacular. Bucket list experience. Very few people will get me out of my house, I’d do it again.
ONE OF THE BEST CONCERTS I HAVE EVER ATTENDED. MORE THAN EXPECTED. ENJOYED EVERY MINUTE.
