GARY NUMAN IN CONCERT:

Inimitable new wave necromancer Gary Numan is as celebrated for cult classics like "Down in the Park" as he is for mainstream '80s superhits like "Cars." Masterfully balancing mass appeal and a darker edge, Numan led audiences through the full gamut of emotions at his 2013 shows, shifting from vitriolic sneer to vulnerable yelp and back again as he wended his way through fan favorites like "Complex" and "We Are Glass." Featuring a full band, an army of icy synths, and his signature lighting design, Numan's 2014 tour dates will deliver more of the intense spectacle he's become known for.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

English-born Gary Numan pioneered commercial electronic music in the late '70s and early '80s with his icy, angular, synth-drenched take on pop's new wave. Following a stint fronting epochal electronic rock outfit Tubeway Army, he struck out on his own, landing three consecutive No. 1's on the UK Albums chart between 1979-1980. Numan's fascination with dystopian themes and technology was a through-line in his music,  and nowhere was it more apparent than on "Cars," his first international No. 1 and a defining moment in new wave music. A consummate showman made legendary by his spectacularly choreographed live shows, Numan continues to record and tour, hitting the road once again in 2014 in support of his 22nd studio album Splinter (Songs From a Broken Mind).

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Gary is still an amazing performer! His band is so talented and energetic! The show was completely mesmerizing! Well worth the ticket price!"

"Fabulous concert -- by turns edgy and vulnerable, hard driving and lyrical. Gary is a superb performer as one can see just by listening to his many live albums and watching his concert videos"

"If anyone asks you, 'Gary Numan... in 2010?' the answer is YES. Phenomenal show. Pleasure Principle came out in 1979 so you might think this could sound dated but it didn't at all! He's a tremendous performer and the sound was spectacular."

    Fantastic Show

Gary Numan is one of the most amazing live acts, and this show was no exception!

    great show - awful crowd

by prophane on 10/25/10Best Buy Theater - New York City

BoomBoom Satelites were very fun. Rasputina put on a great show. Although Gary claimed that he was having throat problems he still sounded great and put on quite a show. Most of the crowd were there just for Numan's "Cars" and were generally loud and disrespectful to all of the performers. They spoke loudly and incessantly throughout the show even during the quieter moments of Rasputina. Shows during CMJ usually have this problem.

    A Numanoid Night

by TheHanzer on 10/25/10Paradise Rock Club - Boston

Gary was amazing. Considering that only just a few days before he had no voice and canceled his performance in Atlanta, Boston got lucky... The sound was perfect, volume right and Gary made us all cover a couple of songs for him to help out his still fragile voice. Gary is awesome! His band is awesome and I look forward to much more of him.... His later stuff is brilliant. Shame that to many he is only known for 'Cars'. Thanks Gary for a great show!

Reminded how good "The Pleasure Principle" was

by PromoTheRobot on 10/24/10Paradise Rock Club - Boston

First have to give props to Rasputina. They were pretty amazing IMO. Not everyones cup of tea for sure, but I was knocked out. Gary Numan was still recovering from losing his voice so his vocals were not as strong as the should be but still decent. He let the fans sing some of the songs that were still out of his range and the audience obliged. First part of the show was the Pleasure Principle album. Forgot how good an album it is and how distinctive Gary Numan's sound was. (Oddly Gary doesn't even like that album. Said so in a Boston Phoenix interview.) The rest of the show was a mix of Numan nuggets (Down in the Park, Are Friends Electric?) and some newer things I did not know. He played for well over two hours so fans got their money's worth. I saw Gary back in 1980 on the original tour for PP and he was a lot more solemn then. By contrast Gary looked loose, almost giddy on stage. Smiling and looking like he was enjoying himself, with some pithy banter with the audience. On a side note the light show was nearly blinding at times. Theater/arena light show crammed into a small club.

    Gary Numan defies time

by Eugeneworks on 10/24/10Paradise Rock Club - Boston

Gary Numan- wow. I'd seen him about 25 years ago and was a huge fan. Now, my 18 year old nephew idolizes Gary and called to tell me about the show. I took him for his birthday. Killer performance! Gary has aged a solid 35 minutes over the years, and sings just like he back in the day. He looks great. He has lightened up a bit too- joking with the audience and smiling lots. Great musicians in his band. Sicko back-up band, too. Good time. I had not been to the Paradise in decades. When I'd played there back around 1980, there were tables and chairs. I don't know which I like better, but the place was well-run with a courteous and smiling staff. Definately an excellent night out. The only part I was not too keen on was Gary playing his more recent stuff, which was really just metal, with that whole drop-D tuning thing on the guitar. Hated it.

    Gary Numan Pleasure Principal Tour

by DougSinBoston on 10/24/10Paradise Rock Club - Boston

It was a joy to hear parts of the Pleasure Principal Album done live, I saw parts of this on his Telekon tour and it still sounds great today. It seemed that the crowd felt the same. As the set continued it phased into more of the recent material which is all great! Great warm up with the Cello bending band Rasputina, a great evening from the Dark Man.

    NUMAN was NUMAN

by ELECTRICFRIEND on 10/24/10Paradise Rock Club - Boston

As a follower of Numan since he performed "Praying to the Alians" on SNL and this being, sadly, the only 3rd show I've seen, the performance was right on target. I over heard a fellow concert goer say " this is the best show he saw Numan perform", in a small club I would agree! Considering Gary was not 100% and he let the crowd know, I was inpressed with how well he performed and even letting the fans sing a few songs was a quite the experience. The show was AWESOME!!!

The closest I've come to a religious experience.

by Pegritz on 10/23/10Trocadero - Philadelphia

In short: Gary Numan has only gotten *better* over the years. The Pleasure Principle is my favourite album of all time, and I've watched DVDs of Numan performing the album around the world during the Touring Principle Tour of 1980--and though those performances were amazing, they were easily surpassed by Numan's current run of shows. Of course, seeing the Man Himself live is by default cooler than just watching a DVD, but Numan's stage presence has greatly evolved over the years. He's just an amazing performer: animated, energetic, clearly enthralled by the music he's making--but very humble and fan-oriented at the same time (a quality I find especially endearing in performers with such a long and varied career as Numan's). Unfortunately, the poor guy had been ill for several days before the show and, as he put it, "my voice is shit tonight," so he just couldn't sing in the range of several tracks from The Pleasure Principle--at which point he asked the crowd to do the vocals for him. Now, I don't know about you, but having the chance to sing along with Gary Numan in a crowd of hundreds, most of whom knew the songs by heart like I did, was an experience just as amazing as hearing him sing them! A Totally Bitchin'(tm) experience. Numan also played for a *long* time--well over an hour--performing not only the entirety of The Pleasure Principle but a number of his newer tracks *and* the requisite classics like "Down in The Park" and "Are 'Friends' Electric?". Though his newer material is a lot more industrial and heavy, it still fit well with the older stuff, and actually kicked up the energy level of the whole show a notch. So, yeah....Well-played, Herr Numan. Well-played.

by ToneERomeo on 10/23/10Trocadero - Philadelphia

Gary Numan played the entire Pleasure Principal album plus 2 Replicas album hits and one hit from Telekon. He also did some of his later stuff. Gary Numan is ageless, the audience is varied and all ages. He sounds great !

Great to see Numan back in Florida

by ErnieA on 10/22/10Firestone Live - Orlando

Having been a fan of Numan's music for over thirty years it was great to see a good crowd of young and old on hand for his first visit to Florida for many years. The show was fantastic and the songs from Pleasure Principal were exciting to hear again live.Numans voice is getting better with age and he belted out every song.My standout moment would be hearing Complex which is one of my personal favorites. The second half of the show was a mix of newer songs which kept the crowd rocking and begging for more.Hope he'll be back to play Orlando when he tours with the new cd.
