Gary Hoey - A True Musical Genius!

by BobHof on 11/27/10City Theatre / Hockeytown - Detroit

If you're a fan of guitar-based rock music and have never attended a Gary Hoey show, you owe it to yourself to do so ASAP! Gary is a genius on his instrument -- tremendously talented and a great showman. His rocking arrangements of Christmas tunes are legendary and have become an annual tradition in our household. That said, his originals are also top notch rockers as well. This was an excellent show and there wasn't a flat spot anywhere. Gary graciously gave the opening slot to a local band named The Muggs, who proceeded to put on a 30 minute show that was easily worth the price of admission itself. Gary's band then took the stage and put on their own AWESOME show. My wife and I took our 12 year old son and 9 year old daughter (hey ... you gotta raise them right!) and they absolutely loved the show. Gary even acknowledged the younger fans in the audience and had a number of insprational messages for the youngsters (just say "no", stay off the drink and the drugs, follow your dreams, etc). Gary is a master! We attend ALOT of live shows and this was by far one of the best! Great musicianship, a tight band, and the positive attitudes displayed by the band and the audience made this a truly unforgettable show! It's great to see such talent and graciousness on display, and fully appreciated by the audience. Keep up the great work, Gary! We'll definitely be in the audience every time you come to the Detroit area.

Gary Hoey - great guitar as usual!

by woodster23 on 8/18/10OC Fair & Event Center - Costa Mesa

Gary Hoey displays amazing guitar playing talent! His skill seems to get better with age and the venue was small enough that you could see him play. Looking forward to future concerts.

    Gary Hoey

by scottydo on 8/16/10OC Fair & Event Center - Costa Mesa

Gary never disappoints.. Smooth as they come and makes it look effortless.. The boys backing him were great too.. Very engaging on stage. Played some new stuff that I can't wait to be released as well as some old favorites. Even snuck in a little SRV tribute. Awesome..

    Gary Hoey Tears it Up!

by LccB on 8/15/10OC Fair & Event Center - Costa Mesa

Gary Hoey does rock and roll hard and with style. He travels the rock and roll highway and brings the audience along for the ride. His band is small but powerful. Bass player Eric moves around the stages and exchanges dueling guitar licks with Hoey. Drummer Matt creates huge percussive sounds on a minimal drum kit. Wanna hear music from 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas' shredded on Hoey's guitar? Buy his Christmas album.

He Makes It Feel Like a Jam-Session

by Stingray on 8/14/10OC Fair & Event Center - Costa Mesa

This is the second time I've seen Gary Hoey live. Both times felt more like a jam session than a scripted performance. He really engages the audience and makes the show a lot of fun. He really knows how to rock. He played a couple of songs off his upcoming album. The title track, Utopia, really rocked. They also played a lot of great covers.

by LK2Rock on 8/14/10OC Fair & Event Center - Costa Mesa

Excellent guitarist, small venue, great music couldn't get much better. They are so good you just want them to play all night. They also hang out after the show and meet people. Very cool.

Gary Hoey is such an awesome rock guitarist. The concert was so much better then expected. You can really listen to his albums over and over and over again, but to see him live is to really appreciate how great he really is.

    Gary Hoey Tore It Up!!!

by Pogoslady on 8/14/10OC Fair & Event Center - Costa Mesa

Gary Hoey and his band tore up The Hangar at the OC Fair last night!!! He played some of the new stuff from his upcoming CD and made sure to include everything we had hoped to hear: Pipeline, Miserlou, Low Rider, Linus & Lucy, The Grinch and 12 Day of Christmas, even though it was August!! He had the entire audience, from 8 to 80, on their feet dancing and cheering by the end!!

Great show - awsome guitar player. Bass and Drums kept right up with him - the three of them really looked like they were hing a blast performing. And look out for his 8 year old guitar playing son...wow.

The sound through the board was spot on; no unwanted reverberation muddying up the sound. Good opening acts. Hoey was amazing, as usual.

    Amazing talent.

by Rockann on 12/19/09ANGELS SPORTS BAR - CORONA

I've known about Gary for years but never heard him touring. When I saw it on Ticketmaster I didn't hesitate to purchase. He is one of the most talented guitar players of our time. He should more recognition and bigger venues.

    Hoey is great!

by hoeyfan on 12/9/09Harrah's VooDoo Lounge - Maryland Heights

The show was the best. 2nd time I've seen him and have not been disappointed yet. This show had everything and plenty of his xmas music. Only reason I did not give 5 stars is because I thought the overall sound had a little too much echo in it. Anybody who wants to see one of the best guitar players out there and one of the nicest people around, go see Gary Hoey, you won't regret it!

    Hoey is awesome

by steelstringer on 12/4/09Harrah's VooDoo Lounge - Maryland Heights

I've been listening to Gary for about 10 yrs. now and finally getting to see him live was a treat. His playing was mostly what I wanted to see but his vocals were a pleasant suprise. Everything about the show was top notch. I thought the sound was very full for a trio. And they didn't just stand there and play, they put on a great show also. I would recommend Gary Hoey to any guitar player or anyone who loves old school rock -n- roll. Looking forward to the new CD coming out at the first of the year!

    just an ok show

by Geno5150 on 12/4/09Harrah's VooDoo Lounge - Maryland Heights

I was really excited about seeing Gary Hoey as I've never been to a show of his and I'm a big fan of Ho Ho Hoey. However, I was let done by this concert. First, the voodoo lounge in St. Louis is not a good place to see a big band. It has a strange setup where the band plays on top of the bar. The band becomes more of an afterthought to the bar. Secondly, the crowd was rather sparse and old. I figured that this would have been a bigger event. Finally, I would have preferred to hear more Christmas songs as this was advertised as a Ho Ho Hoey show. Instead, he only played about 5 Christmas tunes. Many of the songs he played where new songs off his upcoming cd. Also, several songs included vocals which is not his strong suite. The lyrics in these songs were rather cheesy. I believe Gary should stick with his Christmas Rock stuff as he could create a great following with this material. Overall, it wasn't a bad show but I was let down by the venue and the lack of the Christmas songs.
