Humor, storytelling and audience sing-a-longs. What a 'feel good' evening of laughter.
As always, his stories are funny, often about the Scandinavian population in Minnesota and about Lake Wobegone. He enjoys singing and includes the audience. His humor is upbeat and positive. We enjoyed the evening and if he comes back to GJ, we'd would most likely go to see him again.
So sweet to have Garrison Keillor on the stage at the Avalon. Remember listening to Prairie Home Companion when I hosted the time slot on the fledgling KPRN community radio station back in the 1980’s. He carried off a memorable solo performance on Friday night, wrangling the audience in with sing-alongs and his signature storytelling.
Garrison Keillor is well worth seeing. Not necessarily for kids, as some stories were more risqué, but all the grey haired members of the audience enjoyed it greatly! At 80 years he is still going strong.
First, hats off to the Parker! I hadn't been in years and it is a gem! First and a half is the genius of Keillor. "This is the generation that knows the lyrics." And, with that plus a wave of his hand an the hum of a note,, he succeeded in getting the room full of nostalgic old folks to sing all the patriotic tunes we knew and sang in school as children. We did a good job too for a theater probably full of old lefties. He acknowledged the political wedges that have divided us....all gently chiding. I doubt that the Parker staff had seen anything much like it and were possibly puzzled or perhaps curious. But the reintroduction to the Parker and the upcoming events was great. Seeing Eddie Palmieri 3/5.
It was everything you’d expect from Garrison &MORE! What a fun reminiscent evening/THANK YOU!
We enjoyed the show. As with his former radio show PRARIE HOME COMPANION, he had/used more time than the material he had to use. It could have been a shorter show and he would have been just fine. A little audience singing along with him goes a long way. That is one way he could have made the show shorter. If an intermission is advertised, there should be an intermission, not just the audience standing up and singing with him.
My husband and I enjoyed listening to A Prairie Home Companion on Saturday nights throughout the 39 years of our married life. This week, for the first time, we got to be with Garrison Keillor live at The Parker in Ft. Lauderdale. We had always marveled that he did his two-hour live show on the radio every week… with no apparent mistakes! Imagine our surprise witnessing him at 80 years old (!)—with only one singer, one pianist and one guitarist—holding his audience in rapt attention for even more than two hours, and not a single word discernibly out of place. To mention just three features of the program that I’m savoring still: 1) He invited us to sing with him, and people did! Beautifully! At the intermission, while those who needed a break left the room, he stayed on stage throughout and led us in hymns, patriotic songs and old favorites. As he noted, although we’re a divided people politically these days, we can still experience wonderful harmony if we have a mind to. 2) He told stories as he did on the radio, not only from Lake Wobegon, but directly from his own life. That made for a new intimacy. For instance he talked about his diagnosis of being on the autism spectrum. But it didn’t come about until he’d already written a book and launched a radio show, so he never let it worry him too much. 3) He wove together classic poems and songs that inspired awe at his incredible memory…and inventions of his own that cracked people up at his amazing ability to be silly. One poem I remember contained a line something like, “When I get to heaven, I’ll really be pissed if it turns out I should have been an atheist.” Thank you, Garrison, for being the treasure you are.
I was looking forward to hearing Garrison Keillor but I couldn't understand a word he said. His voice was muffled. We were in row ORCHR K. Is your speaker system faulty?? And the temperature in the theater was freezing. A complete waste of money.
From the first moment to the memories shared the pace of the performance was terrific. The content was exceptional and the delivery straight from heart to heart. It went by too fast. Loved every minute!
Garrison Keillor didn’t tell stories of Lake Woebegone, he had the audience sing patriotic and old songs. I can do that at home! He had no script. And he looked like he was wearing old wrinkled suit. Waste of time and money.
Amazing that an 80 year old can do a 2 hour 15 minute show without a break. He is as entertaining as ever and doesn't get political. We miss him on the radio.
I took my family to see Garrison Keillor as a belated Christmas gift. It was an incredible experience. Garrison did not disappoint. His voice sounded wonderful and his storytelling was on point. I love the Uptown Theater as a venue and have seen many shows there. We had a fantastic time, all three generations present loved the event.
The show was not what i expected but it ended up even better. The songs were fun especially when the crowd got involved. The stories were entertaining. And Mr. Keillor was full of energy.
2 Hours of joy. 10/10. Well worth the price and would go again if he returns
Hoping to hear some of Garrison’s stories, but instead it was muffled singing by the host, then audience song participation. It felt like a combination of church and vaudeville. Really disappointed. Left at intermission. Took a chance that the second half was not going to improve. Did not have a program to see what was coming up. A waste of time and money.
Spent a Saturday Evening with Garrison at the Rialton in Joliet. We were very entertained and brought back a few memories of the past.
Small venue. Garrison Keillor was great. He followed the other small, solo shows format and added Christmas. It was wonderful to hear the news from Lake Wobegon after so much pandemic.
We tried to share but this site is a bit slow to catch up with us. The shared respect between the audience and Mr. Keillor was made the evening a positive experience. At this point in the pandemic and political unrest we all need a life affirming gathering. Thank you all for this recharging event. This was the fastest two hours in a very long time.
Sadly disappointed. IMHO: Not much “holiday.” Would not consider it a “family” event.
