Galactic in Concert

New Orleans collective Galactic has long been a musical powerhouse in their hometown, but they’ve had just as much fun spreading their vibrant, Big Easy–inspired sound to nearly every corner of the country and beyond. The jazz-funk giants exhibit a jam-band–like charm on stage, weaving traditional and modern sounds into songs fit for lazy days in the sun and spirited nights at intimate clubs. Over the years, they’ve been regulars at New Orleans’ beloved music venue Tipitina’s, toured the US multiple times, and made frequent appearances at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, High Sierra Music Festival, and various other jazz and rock events around North America and Europe. When performing in New Orleans, Galactic like to invite a guest or two on stage, including fellow hometown heroes like The Neville Brothers, Dirty Dozen Brass Band and the Soul Rebels Brass Band. On the road, they’ve shared the stage with artists like Jack Johnson, The Roots, Counting Crows, Juvenile, B.B. King, and other notable performers in rock, rap, roots and reggae. Wherever they are, expect a whole lot of soul, sass and brass — and plenty of Mardi Gras merriment.

About Galactic

Galactic’s bold fusion of funk, R&B, jazz, rock, hip-hop and electronic music is irresistible. Drawing from the time-honored traditions of New Orleans’ brass bands, funk pioneers and blues superstars, the group formed in 1994 when childhood friends guitarist Jeff Raines and bassist Robert Mercurio joined drummer Stanton Moore, saxophonist/producer Ben Ellman, organist Rich Vogel and vocalist Theryl DeClouet. Their debut album, 1996’s Coolin’ Off, showcased Galactic’s deep love for New Orleans and its rich jazz heritage. With album number two, 1998’s Crazyhorse Mongoose, they landed on Billboard’s Top Contemporary Jazz Albums chart. Moving into the 21st century, Galactic began experimenting more with their sound, bringing in notable hip-hop producer Dan the Automator on 2003’s Ruckus, collaborating with alternative rap stars like Lyrics Born and Boots Riley on 2007’s From the Corner to the Block, working alongside New Orleans musicians such as Allen Toussaint and Trombone Shorty on 2010’s Ya-Ka-May, incorporating Brazilian dance beats on 2012’s Carnivale Electricos, and inviting veteran vocalists like Macy Gray and Mavis Staples to sing on 2015’s Into the Deep. Since, Galactic has continued to keep themselves — and their fans — on their toes with new sounds, new guests and new ways to keep New Orleans’ celebrated spirit alive.

    Great concert!!!

    by anewyorkgroove96 on 3/30/16Terminal 5 - New York

Great concert, a must see show!! If you like to dance and get groovy, this is a show you wanna see. The venue was cool, three floors, coat check, 3 bars, but security was very pushy, thought they were unprofessional when talking to people who were in front of me. I was not impressed. Soulive and galactic were awesome, go see them.

    Very strong!

by Anonymous on 3/30/16Terminal 5 - New York

My third time seeing Galactic. As expected Neville was superlative fronting the band. I had never heard of Erica Falls, but wow! incredible stage presence and beautiful, powerful voice. These two really let the regulars of the band create a powerful, lasting experience. Very lively, great variety, and well, just funky funk. T5 is somewhat maligned, and the main dance floor Is not huge, but it handled a sizeable crowd very well several large bars conveniently located. $4 coat check is a joke, though. I also enjoyed Soulive, but as an old fart I would've appreciated everything starting an hour earlier.

Galactic put on a really good show.

by BrooklynVin on 3/29/16Terminal 5 - New York

I titled my review that way because being a big Galactic fan, I have many shows with which to compare this past weekend's show. While good, comparatively speaking - it wasn't as good as other Galactic shows I've seen of late. But - as is the usual with them - they put on a great show - Cyril Neville & Erica Falls were awesome! When Erica did that vocal thing - playing notes with her voice - I was in absolute awe! The venue - Terminal 5 - is one of my favorites to see a show - I love the multiple floors - so you can really move around and see the show from different views. One thing I must say - I really REALLY hope that someone from Galactic reads this - bring back Maggie Koerner & David Shaw. In my opinion, one of the best Galactic shows I've ever seen was back in 2013 when they both took the stage at Terminal 5 with Galactic. That is the show that I compare all others to!

    Too little Galactic

by DrJLZ on 3/8/16The Masonic - San Francisco

A great band with a great drummer that we ended up having relatively little time with during this evening. Given the ridiculous price of the ticket, that covered much of what we didn't really come for, it was very frustrating. If this is how its going to be, Ill wait till Jazzfest to see them next time.

    WHERE WAS CYRIL?

by gsparky on 3/6/16The Belly up - Solana Beach

Was so happy to see after 2 years Cyril was going to be the lead singer again. Well something happened to Cyril and Erica stepped in. I'm not saying that Erica, Maggie and Macy are not great singers but I like Galactic with gritty male lead singers ...who can also rap like they have had since the beginning. I really enjoyed Corey's singing and trombone solo's...awesome! Hope Cyril is back in front next month when I see them again!

    Groove heavy funk

by Notafan3 on 2/24/16Fillmore Auditorium (Denver) - Denver

Missed the opening act. Soulive was awesome, as always. No shady horns or guest vox. Galactic had Cerill Nevill, erica hall and Trombone Shorty sit in. Great night of music. Fillmore is far from my favorite Denver live music venue. Main floor is flat and crowded, but the sound quality is great. On the elevated sides, the lows get muddy and reverberate. Pick your poison. Stage right "secret" bathrooms are rarely crowded, however and that back bar doesn't have a line.

The first act from Houston was amazing that came on before Soulive. They played maybe 3-4 songs and left the stage. Soulive was boring after the 3-4th song however they droned on for another 10-15 songs. They all sounded the same. Galactic is amazing but did not even come on until after 11:00 PM. Being from out of town, this is rough on us. If the first band played from 8-9 and Galactic play from 9-11 or 11:30, it would have been a great show. Forget Soulive!

    Galactic/Soulive

by TG22 on 2/23/16Fillmore Auditorium (Denver) - Denver

Have seen Galactic many times before. Show was ok but the fact that with 2 opening bands the Galactic set didn't start until 11:15 was very late. I noticed many in attendance leaving after 4-5 songs of their set. My wife and I were in the venue for over 3 hours before the main act ever took the stage and the show didn't get out until after 1:15 AM. Maybe I am getting older, but I don't want to be at a show until the wee hours of the morning.

    Galactic was Fantastic

by Mysto on 2/23/16Fillmore Auditorium (Denver) - Denver

I thought Galactic was Fantastic and that girl singer was super-Great. Soulive on the other hand kinda sucked. I love jam bands, but they just didn't do it for me.

    Galactic - don't miss them!

    by MECPA1 on 11/17/15Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

What an amazing set of musicians. Have now seen them 3 times in the last year and I appreciate them more each time. Stanton Moore on drums and Corey Henry on trombone are the highlights but there is not a weak link anywhere on that stage. The funk jazz jam band were spot on in Atlanta from the opening song. Never stopped dancing the entire time. Might have to become a groupie!

Galactic is sooooo hot right now

by Audiofunktion on 3/23/15House of Blues Boston - Boston

Amazing show with a bunch of wonderful artists that were the most funky and precise band i've ever seen live.

by Centurycity on 3/10/15The Fillmore - San Francisco

The show was just ok. They didn't have the same singer as before (Maggie Koerner). They brought in several singers and special guests, had lyrics borne on a few tracks. The vibe was good not great and they were better last year with Maggie who stayed w them all night. Con brio singer was amazing! He's a good singer but an AMAZING showman!! Hope he succeeds in the future. Closest thing to MJ that I've ever seen. Through the last 15 years I've seen Galactic a dozen times and will continiue in the future. Would love it if they brought back some of the old tunes!!!!

Galactic and Monophonics rocked my groovy world!

by Jlavie on 2/3/15State Theatre - St Petersburg

Hadn't heard of either band prior to the show and I am SO glad that I went. And I actually liked the opening act better. Don't get me wrong, Galactic killed it too but Monophonics just brought it from the heart, could really get in the groove with them... (having the crowd sing along with you is always a pleaser!)
