About

This epic musical features the words of Abraham Lincoln and music inspired by the letters of those who lived through the Civil War. Through a series of highly theatrical vignettes, we see everyday Americans courageously confront the gritty realities of a tattered nation and a war that pitted brother against brother. Lincoln’s inspirational words intermix with these stories, imagining a bloody nation once again unified. Ford’s Theatre is developing this work as part of "Ford’s 150," a series of events commemorating the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s assassination

    Stupendous

When the curtain opened to actors in street clothes, I thought that perhaps this evening was a mistake. Not so. What a spectacular musical. The actors were enthusiastic, their emotions convincing, and their voices beautiful. They captured the agony of both sides of a divided nation. At the moment the president was shot, I was surprised at my own emotions. No, it can't be; rewrite history! The only criticism I have is that the writers of Freedom Song chose to rewrite history by leaving out Abe Lincoln's own words. He did not say "all men are equal." Rather he said "all men are created equal." That one word "created" was the essence of Abe Lincoln He was a god-fearing man and acknowledged a creator.

This was a wonderful show! The creators of this show and this music using the words of Abraham Lincoln are to be highly commended for their artistry. It was so well done! And the singers' performances fantastic! I am telling everyone to go see it before it goes away on May 20.

    Bravo

by Tokur on 5/5/15Ford's Theatre - Washington

Was not sure what to expect as it indicates there may be a lot of speeches in the narrative. Instead it is a surprisingly good true musical with mostly good songs and delivery by energetic cast.

    A historically riveting performance

by jamesvandep on 5/4/15Ford's Theatre - Washington

This musical took the viewer on a journey through the civil war, deconstructing each event through the personal perspective of a common soldier, wife, and slave. The music was phenomenal and the voices of the actors and actresses were amazing. Personally, the show ran a little long for my taste. However, the structure of the production made up for it's length.

There really are not words to describe this show because I could only feel it deep in my soul. The characters were outstanding and each one played their parts with depth. And their voices --oh their voices -- BEAUTIFUL.

To be almost in the Box where President Lincoln was Assassinated, and to hear the performance was truly an unforgettable experience! My 7 7th and 8th grade Students told me after our return from Washington that this was by far the highlight of their ENTIRE stay in DC. Thanks to the director and Cast who made the show what it was! Truly amazing Best regards

    What an amazing production!

    by MsAnn227 on 4/30/15Ford's Theatre - Washington

I really enjoyed the production. The story gave both sides and showed that both sides suffered losses emotionally. The singing voices were outstanding and that is why I gave this production a "5." It was good theatre and I feel that it should be on The Great White Way.

    Freedom's Song was marvelous.

by MDplaylover on 4/28/15Ford's Theatre - Washington

Freedom's Song is an absolutely fabulous play. All the actors have marvelous singing voices. I have never seen a musical with a better cast. Each and every man and woman in the cast is a top notch singer. The performances of the players is reason alone to see this play. One caution is that you must listen to the sone lyrics. The story is told through the music. The play is 90 minutes long and is performed without intermission. If you can get seats I highly recommend that you attend.

Fantastic, moving show with incredible performers

    by Leroy422 on 4/28/15Ford's Theatre - Washington

First of all, I had no idea what to expect from a show in D.C. at Ford's Theater (parks department/tourist haven) but since my niece is a super fan of Lincoln and musicals, it seemed that "Freedom's Song" was an event that couldn't be missed. I am happy to report that the performers could be on Broadway - Equity Actors with voices that filled the space and moved the audience. The music was accessible and haunting, the words of the songs carrying the story while the actual words of Lincoln were spoken by the actors. The scenic design/lighting created some stunning stage pictures -- during a slave song projected photos from the era are used in a very emotional way. Not a dry eye in the house as the image one had thought was a series of low hills pulls out to reveal they are actually the scars on a man's back. Its a very compelling show considering how many limitations there must have been in order to represent both Northern and Southern trauma in the most deadly war every fought by Americans. My one quibble would be that there should have been fewer white male characters and more women and black characters. Nonetheless, kudos to the producers and directors and performers. Great show!

The performance was terrific and the stage style was authentic. The young performers were energetic and talented. It was certainly a unique way to portray the voice of President Abraham Lincoln and his relationship to the Civil War.

    Wanted to Like It- Couldn't

by AmericanUniversityMom on 4/27/15Ford's Theatre - Washington

This musical is all over the place. Some of the singing is wonderful, while some is very average and borderline weak. The story bounces around from present day to Lincoln's Presidency, from north to south, from black to white, from utter desperation of slavery to weepy women missing their soldiers, that you never knew what was coming next. The theme and the mood from one song to the next was annoying, difficult to follow, and trivialized the more serious themes of this production. There were people that actually got up and left during the performance, and I can't blame them. I cannot recommend this production.

The actors, music and production were outstanding. The price of the ticket also included admission to the Pederson House (where the President died) and the excellent attached Education Center, which was a bonus. So definitely allow for at least another hour before or after the show. I might have preferred orchestra seating but ticketing online (or because it was a matinee or because it was senior discount ticket) did not allow me to do so. Finally be careful about the ticket insurance offered through Ticketmasters. I did not intend to purchase it but somehow it was added on as an additional purchase and it took some effort to undo it.
