About

Frontier Touring are thrilled to announce that two of the most prolific bands of recent times, Franz Ferdinand and MGMT, will join forces for a pair of special co-headline shows in Australia this July.

These shows mark both Franz Ferdinand and MGMT’s first visits to our shores in five years, with co-headline performances at Melbourne’s Festival Hall (Tue 24 Jul) and Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion (Wed 25 Jul), as well as a stop at Byron Bay’s Splendour In The Grass festival.

Glasgow quintet Franz Ferdinand remain one of the UK’s biggest exports of the last two decades, and will perform in Australia on the back of announcing a huge world tour and dropping fifth record Always Ascending. Their 2004 self-titled debut album immediately propelled them to major global commercial and critical success, taking home the 2004 Mercury Music Prize as well as seeing their anthemic single ’Take Me Out’ chart in the top ten across the world.

Fresh off the back of the UK leg of their world tour and currently performing in the USA, the quintet are looking razor-sharp ahead of their Australian shows. As noted by The AU Review,  Franz Ferdinand live are not to be missed: ’The new songs fit in well with the old material and filled the room with real warmth, allowing the band to prove that they are not content to just sit back and trade on nostalgia alone.

MGMT are Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, the Grammy-nominated duo who have been producing innovative psychedelic pop anthems since their 2008 debut Oracular Spectacular including some of the biggest songs of the 2000s in ‘Kids’, 'Time to Pretend’ and ‘Electric Feel'. These will be MGMT’s first performances in Australia since January 2014.

The band’s fourth album Little Dark Age, released earlier this year, features the “undeniably brilliant” (NME) lead single ‘Little Dark Age’ as well as ‘When You Die’ and ‘Me And Michael’, and was released earlier this year to widespread critical acclaim. Produced by MGMT, Patrick Wimberly (Chairlift, Kelela, Blood Orange) and long-time collaborator Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Spoon, Tame Impala), Little Dark Age is a true “show of strength” (Q, 4*) and “unironically gorgeous… MGMT doing what MGMT do best” (The Guardian, 4*).

After an extensive UK, Europe and North American headline tour at the start of the year that took them to a number of iconic venues including a sold out show at London’s Electric Brixton, Paradiso in Amsterdam, and the Hollywood Palladium, the band will embark on a huge eleven-date headline US tour this May before heading to summer festivals across the world, including Firefly, Mad Cool and NOS Alive. MGMT are thrilled to be performing in Australia for the first time in over four years.

The combined firepower of Franz Ferdinand and MGMT in Melbourne and Sydney this July is sure to be unmissable.

  • Great Venue, Great concert!

by Kakealot on 10/22/13Music Center at Strathmore - N. BethesdaRating: 5 out of 5

I never thought they would visit this area so this concert was a must see! They did not disappoint. Great sounds, and great energy. Played a nice selection of their older albums and new.

  • Franz Ferdinand rocked the Newport

by Neetu on 10/21/13Newport Music Hall - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

Franz Ferdinand put on a great show at the Newport Music Hall. Even standing off the main floor allowed for a great view. Nice light show with the music. A couple of their older tunes were missed, as many songs from their new album were played.

  • Franz Ferdinand is the bomb!!!

by MangaMom on 10/21/13Newport Music Hall - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

OMG, the concert was absolutely fantastic. They played all the songs I know and love. I would see them again in a heartbeat.

  • Oldschool style but ROCK baby !!!!!!!

by boulboul on 10/21/13Music Center at Strathmore - N. BethesdaRating: 5 out of 5

I am still amazed how the easiest way to play music is the easiest way to make a crowd of 2000 dancing !!!! this band plays old school way but it WORKS so well !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! let their fire out of control !!!!!!! and go to enjoy their music. special mention for the 8 hands impro on drum !!!!!!!!!!!

  • How do you NOT play your new single?!?!

by ScottieByNature on 10/21/13Newport Music Hall - ColumbusRating: 3 out of 5

Overall, they sounded great and were pretty fun to watch. They played all their old hits and spanned all their albums. However, I was a little raw that they consciously chose not to play their brand new single "Right Action"; the song I was looking forward to hearing most. On my way out, I caught a glimpse at a setlist that someone had snagged, and saw that they actually had it listed as an option for an encore song, but they instead chose to play the much less interesing "Fresh Strawberries." Seriously? It's practically the title track of their new album. Not to mention their comically oversized prop guitar amps had "Thoughts", "Words", and "Action" emblazoned across the front of them. What a tease. It was still a decent show, and any Franz fan would have enjoyed themselves, but I couldn't help but feel a bit cheated and dissatisfied on my way home that night... which is not the way you want to feel after having spent nearly $80 on a pair of tickets.

  • Franz Ferdinand! - great as expected!

    by FFfan88888 on 10/20/13Music Center at Strathmore - N. BethesdaRating: 5 out of 5

Franz Ferdinand delivered one of the most energetic and lively performances I've ever seen. The songs are all catchy and you can dance to all. One drawback of the show was the venue which could be blamed on the band manager. It was at Strathmore in MD and this place is mainly for classical music performances or any sit-down shows. But this is dance/rock show! I wish it took place at the 9:30 club.

  • Waited seven years to see Franz Ferdinand

by MWan on 10/20/13Newport Music Hall - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

I moved from Malaysia to Ohio two months ago and then learnt that Franz Ferdinand was going to perform in my home country for the first time. I complained to a fellow fan who resides in the US and she informed me that Franz Ferdinand was going to perform in my current city. I cannot believe my luck and after many years of being a fan of theirs, I knew I had to see them live on stage. That was my very first rock concert and it was perfect. Their showmanship was really amazing and they just knew how to build up the energy from the crowd. They sound just as good as they do in their recordings. As a 5-foot-tall person, I was lucky enough to be able to see them clearly without having to tiptoe -- much thanks to the hall's layout. The only negative point I have about this entire concert is that I was not able to meet them personally. I would definitely attend their concert again, though.

  • Franz Ferdinand Ignites the Crowd!

by mikeymellow on 10/20/13Music Center at Strathmore - N. BethesdaRating: 5 out of 5

With high energy and a frenetic pace, Franz Ferdinand got the crowd to its feet for a powerful, rocking 90 minute show. My wife and I were absolutely amazed at their performance. Wow - this fire is out of control!

  • by cvsports on 10/20/13Music Center at Strathmore - N. BethesdaRating: 5 out of 5

Did not sit for 90 minutes. Kinetic from beginning to end.

  • Franz Ferndinand sans small venue intimacy

by WashingtonCrunch on 10/20/13Music Center at Strathmore - N. BethesdaRating: 3 out of 5

Band was great, just not as big of fan of Strathmore as I thought I would be. Felt more like a high school musical in terms of the setting. Not that that is bad, but didn't deliver the way other smaller venues can. FF played well thought. Drummer was best part of the show.

  • Franz Ferdinand still has it

by JacquelineinDC on 10/20/13Music Center at Strathmore - N. BethesdaRating: 5 out of 5

I've seen Franz Ferdinand several times over the last 10 years and this was the best show I have seen them play. I was worried given the break up and discourse rumors that perhaps the band wouldnt be as enthusiastic on stage but i couldnt have been more wrong. Alex still rules the stage like Freddie Mercury, Nick still rocks his hips like Dwight Yokum, Bob still just stands there and Paul IMO is the BEST drummer of my generation. they played plenty of their older music with a nice blend of their new tracks. I am still in a daze over it. The venue was excellent and more intimate. I wish I could relive that night over and over. ONLY complaint, they didnt sing Michael or Right action?, and I saw the set list because I was in the front and those songs were on it, but they did sing Jacqueline so practically all is nearly forgiven.

  • Amazing!!!

by Raulinef on 10/19/13Newport Music Hall - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Godd sound, the band playing new and old songs. Dancing and enjoying as much as the public. Good place to see concerts. Support band Frankie Rose played a short show with a sound that could be better

  • FF nailed it.

by KariLMPLS on 10/14/13Skyway Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 5 out of 5

Was a fantasic show - so fun to see them live. They had tons of energy. Loved the venue - every hipsters dream.

  • Franz Ferdinand rocked!

by designdesign on 10/14/13Skyway Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 5 out of 5

Franz Ferdinand put on an amazing show... engaging band with great live versions of their songs. Loved the intimate venue too. Becoming an official FF groupie is still being taken into consideration...

  • by RobBarbro on 10/13/13Skyway Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 5 out of 5

Franz Ferdinand played incredibly, had all the energy I could have asked for. Only thing I might want in the future would be being better able to hear Alex Kapranos interact with the audience - his voice always melded with the crowd chit-chat.

  • Best show ever!!!

    by Cat20092009 on 10/13/13Skyway Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 5 out of 5

Franz is my favorite band and they are even better live! The opening band, Frankie Rose, was really great, too. I bought a cd and a record, from them. The venue was perfect. I would definitely go to a show there again. And, there is a bar next door with live music and they serve food late into the night. That was my first time in Minneapolis, and it exceeded my expectations.

  • Great concert!

by FFFanforlike on 10/12/13Skyway Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 5 out of 5

I love Franz Ferdinand! I drove 2.5 hours and back the same night to see it. Worth the major exhaustion the next day.

  • Franz is Electric!

by Attu on 10/12/13Skyway Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 5 out of 5

You would think that coming across the pond and having all these shows here in the states would put a bit of a damper on the performance be that was NOT the case. They lit up the stage for over two hours and never skipped a beat. Excellent show through and through.

  • Right food, right venue, right band!

by FranzFanTexas on 10/8/13House of Blues Dallas - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

What a great evening! We got to the House of Blues early for dinner. It was our first time there, and had a great dinner and drinks. There was live music in the dining room and that made for a nice atmosphere. Then we went downstairs to the theater and milled around and had drinks before the show started. They have waitstaff at the seats too, which was a nice touch. The opening band was Ume and rocked. Then after an intermission, Franz Ferdinand took stage and blew me away. Those guys were super-polished, which kind of surprised me. They are my favorite band, but I was expecting more of a garage-band sound live. They could have played a huge arena and would have sounded just as good.
