Frontier Touring are thrilled to announce that two of the most prolific bands of recent times, Franz Ferdinand and MGMT, will join forces for a pair of special co-headline shows in Australia this July.
These shows mark both Franz Ferdinand and MGMT’s first visits to our shores in five years, with co-headline performances at Melbourne’s Festival Hall (Tue 24 Jul) and Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion (Wed 25 Jul), as well as a stop at Byron Bay’s Splendour In The Grass festival.
Glasgow quintet Franz Ferdinand remain one of the UK’s biggest exports of the last two decades, and will perform in Australia on the back of announcing a huge world tour and dropping fifth record Always Ascending. Their 2004 self-titled debut album immediately propelled them to major global commercial and critical success, taking home the 2004 Mercury Music Prize as well as seeing their anthemic single ’Take Me Out’ chart in the top ten across the world.
Fresh off the back of the UK leg of their world tour and currently performing in the USA, the quintet are looking razor-sharp ahead of their Australian shows. As noted by The AU Review, Franz Ferdinand live are not to be missed: ’The new songs fit in well with the old material and filled the room with real warmth, allowing the band to prove that they are not content to just sit back and trade on nostalgia alone.’
MGMT are Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, the Grammy-nominated duo who have been producing innovative psychedelic pop anthems since their 2008 debut Oracular Spectacular including some of the biggest songs of the 2000s in ‘Kids’, 'Time to Pretend’ and ‘Electric Feel'. These will be MGMT’s first performances in Australia since January 2014.
The band’s fourth album Little Dark Age, released earlier this year, features the “undeniably brilliant” (NME) lead single ‘Little Dark Age’ as well as ‘When You Die’ and ‘Me And Michael’, and was released earlier this year to widespread critical acclaim. Produced by MGMT, Patrick Wimberly (Chairlift, Kelela, Blood Orange) and long-time collaborator Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Spoon, Tame Impala), Little Dark Age is a true “show of strength” (Q, 4*) and “unironically gorgeous… MGMT doing what MGMT do best” (The Guardian, 4*).
After an extensive UK, Europe and North American headline tour at the start of the year that took them to a number of iconic venues including a sold out show at London’s Electric Brixton, Paradiso in Amsterdam, and the Hollywood Palladium, the band will embark on a huge eleven-date headline US tour this May before heading to summer festivals across the world, including Firefly, Mad Cool and NOS Alive. MGMT are thrilled to be performing in Australia for the first time in over four years.
The combined firepower of Franz Ferdinand and MGMT in Melbourne and Sydney this July is sure to be unmissable.

Great music--wish it had been longer. Franz Ferdinand never disappoints!
It was one of the best shows I've seen there since h.o.b's opened. I've seen many bands play, and by far and away Franz killed it! They played all there hit songs plus there new ones.
The show was awesome, as usual. Not quite as amazing as the last time they were here, but great nonetheless. But perhaps that's just because hardly anyone in the balcony was standing up or dancing. Not sure how one can NOT dance at a FF show, but if they did they would have had an even more amazing time! They are AWESOME.
What another great show put on by Franz Ferdinand. They were full of energy and had the crowd going. My only complaint which is minor is they should have closed with a better song or two. I will be seeing them again in a few days in Austin!
Great show, should have played more of the 2 record or some of the slower songs but great energy.
I've seen Franz 3 times and every time is better than the last. They play full sets and put everything into it. Major props to Scotland's finest !
They were really great performers, the crowd was awesome too. good concert.
The show was great. Lots of new tracks in this one but with enough old classics to satisfy any fan.
This was my third time seeing Franz Ferdinand in the past year and even this show felt like a first, the huge grin I had on my face throughout this set does not happen frequently and it said it all. Lead vocalist A. Kapranos' energy, style and showmanship is one for the rock n roll history books, REALLY. Franz Ferdinand is one of the greatest live bands not only of the 21st century but of all time. You are destined to keep your feet moving at any FF concert.
Best venue ever, excellent band, fantastic energy.. loved it!
This concert was more than just amazing, it was incredible. The opening act usually make you think something like: "I want them (opening act) to finish so I can see the main act", but not this time. The Palma Violets were great at playing their songs and getting the audience pumped and excited for Franz Ferdinand. Franz Ferdinand played all of their greatest hits and some of their new songs. Everything was more than perfect. Franz Ferdinand is a band that everyone that enjoys alternative rock should see.
The show was amazing, Franz Ferdinand is the best band!!!!!!!
Outdoor venue at Humphrey's on Shelter Island, San Diego is wonderful! Not much "seating" available but it's a cozy intimate outdoor setting. I want to go back there to watch another show!! Franz Ferd - what can I say ... they were phenomenal as usual. Alex's sexy vocals were outstanding! The entire band killed it!
It was am amazing show and the band as always gives it their best. San Diego seems to just want to stand and stare and not really dance or cheer, which makes me sad. That's why a lot of bands skip SD and stop in LA, which is horrible.
It was just amazing! Franz Ferdinand are one of the best bands!
Awesome band to see in a small venue. The sound and energy exceeded my expectations.
They play awesome live. The band as a whole gives an electrifying performance, not to mention that they interact with the crowd, which gives the concert a more personal experience.
My first Franz Ferdinand concert and it was absolulety amazing. Worth every penny (pretty cheap tickets!), and I can not wait to see them again. If you can, go see them live because they are amazing. I was lucky and got right in front of the stage. Go see them!!
Franz ferdinand was always on my favorite band list, I drove down to Rhode island to see them and it was SOOO worth it, GREAT TICKET PRICES, only feet from the stage, they put on a very good show, great live!!! Alex(lead singer) decided to crowd surf, right where I was, what a moment, so much fun!
Love this band on CD, but thought that they didnt come off live very well. They dont translate their powerful changes as well in the live performance as they do on the recorded material. So I wouldnt recommend them live but I also wouldnt say they were bad or anything, just thought it lacked a bit of punch.
