About

Frontier Touring are thrilled to announce that two of the most prolific bands of recent times, Franz Ferdinand and MGMT, will join forces for a pair of special co-headline shows in Australia this July.

These shows mark both Franz Ferdinand and MGMT’s first visits to our shores in five years, with co-headline performances at Melbourne’s Festival Hall (Tue 24 Jul) and Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion (Wed 25 Jul), as well as a stop at Byron Bay’s Splendour In The Grass festival.

Glasgow quintet Franz Ferdinand remain one of the UK’s biggest exports of the last two decades, and will perform in Australia on the back of announcing a huge world tour and dropping fifth record Always Ascending. Their 2004 self-titled debut album immediately propelled them to major global commercial and critical success, taking home the 2004 Mercury Music Prize as well as seeing their anthemic single ’Take Me Out’ chart in the top ten across the world.

Fresh off the back of the UK leg of their world tour and currently performing in the USA, the quintet are looking razor-sharp ahead of their Australian shows. As noted by The AU Review,  Franz Ferdinand live are not to be missed: ’The new songs fit in well with the old material and filled the room with real warmth, allowing the band to prove that they are not content to just sit back and trade on nostalgia alone.

MGMT are Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, the Grammy-nominated duo who have been producing innovative psychedelic pop anthems since their 2008 debut Oracular Spectacular including some of the biggest songs of the 2000s in ‘Kids’, 'Time to Pretend’ and ‘Electric Feel'. These will be MGMT’s first performances in Australia since January 2014.

The band’s fourth album Little Dark Age, released earlier this year, features the “undeniably brilliant” (NME) lead single ‘Little Dark Age’ as well as ‘When You Die’ and ‘Me And Michael’, and was released earlier this year to widespread critical acclaim. Produced by MGMT, Patrick Wimberly (Chairlift, Kelela, Blood Orange) and long-time collaborator Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Spoon, Tame Impala), Little Dark Age is a true “show of strength” (Q, 4*) and “unironically gorgeous… MGMT doing what MGMT do best” (The Guardian, 4*).

After an extensive UK, Europe and North American headline tour at the start of the year that took them to a number of iconic venues including a sold out show at London’s Electric Brixton, Paradiso in Amsterdam, and the Hollywood Palladium, the band will embark on a huge eleven-date headline US tour this May before heading to summer festivals across the world, including Firefly, Mad Cool and NOS Alive. MGMT are thrilled to be performing in Australia for the first time in over four years.

The combined firepower of Franz Ferdinand and MGMT in Melbourne and Sydney this July is sure to be unmissable.

    Great show!

by Ree on 8/23/22Fillmore Minneapolis - Minneapolis

I've seen Franz Ferdinand several times over the past 18 years or so and they never disappoint. Even with the change in band members they still put out a quality show! The new drummer is fantastic.

    Brilliant concert!

by JenW on 8/22/22MTELUS - Montreal

Franz Ferdinand returned the Montréal to give a cracking concert of some of their most loved songs. They had the crowd singing and dancing for the entire set. The venue was buzzing! After 20 years, Franz Ferdinand still puts on a brilliant show. Their fans love them.

    Blown away!!!

by Kazza on 8/21/22MTELUS - Montreal

I last saw Franz Ferdinand at the Metropolis about 12 years ago and they’re still the greatest band I’ve ever seen live! Amazing venue, great crowd, high energy, all the FF hits, and their 2 new songs are stellar! Wish I could’ve gotten closer to the stage, but we had a good view from where we were. Can’t wait for the next show - hope it’s not another 12 years!

Most fun I've had in years.

by Crash Adams on 8/21/22MTELUS - Montreal

Franz Ferdinand is one of my favorite bands. I know and love practically all of their tunes. They came in with a lot of energy and a really well crafted set. They definitely gave it their all and put on one hell of a show. The crowd was super into it and I was shocked at the energy level in the room and how we really kinda shook the foundation with everyone jumping and dancing along. They played a lot of great hits and everything was just a blast. The opener, called Vundabar, was also a lot of fun. Definitely set the stage for the night and was a good choice. Franz played for 90 minutes. I was admittedly a little disappointed and would have loved for them to play more. But I can't really fault them for a 90 minute show. It's definitely standard and sufficient. It's not a complaint exactly, just... I was having so much fun and I really would have loved for them to continue. Anyways... fantastic evening. I loved it. Will absolutely go see them again next chance I get.

Great band, great concert (bad venue choice)

by Francisco Fernando on 8/20/22History - Toronto

A great band with lots of great songs. I liked their light and video show, and they played very well. It was very enjoyable despite the bad sound of the location. It was very loud, so one thing I would recommend is better control of the sound level. People leaving the venue were screaming at each other instead of talking. It makes you wonder... The upside of the venue was that it was relatively small and you were quite close to the bands (unlike Budweiser Stage, Scotiabank Arena, or even Massey Hall). I would recommend they insist on a better location when in Toronto. History is not the right place for them. The contrast from the warm-up band to FF was stark, maybe on purpose so they could shine more brightly ;-) I will see them next time they are in town, hopefully at Massey Hall!

À total présence on thème scene! The High subtility of speaking French and connecting 200% with the audience. Excellent mix of musical Genius (Alex kapranos and FF) and free electron!

As always I love the House of Blues

by Brenden on 8/18/22House of Blues Boston - Boston

I love going to the house of blues in fenway. I have been to so many shows since Chris Brown back in 2010 to Franz Ferdinand in 2022. My favorite venue by far, the staff is friendly, they care a lot about your safety. Security is very nice and I've never had an issue. Franz Ferdinand was amazing. Wonderful show! Will be back again. Shoutout to Louis at the coatcheck

The best view in NYC for a open area Concert!

    by P. B. on 8/17/22The Rooftop at Pier 17 - New York

Great environment and visuals. The spot is great for a nice sunset view, with the Brooklyn Bridge and Skyline in the back. Beverages were a little bit expensive. The band and sound were perfect. Overall, a great experience!
