FLYING LOTUS IN CONCERT:

Genre-spanning producer and rapper Flying Lotus has quickly become one of the most influential and innovative producers in experimental hip hop. His spacious, trippy productions take on new dimensions at his mesmerizing live shows, where an extensive setup of software and hardware instruments provides him with an arsenal of mind-expanding sounds to manipulate. On tour in 2014 in support of his fifth album You're Dead!, Flying Lotus will treat ticket buyers to new cuts from the release alongside classic fan favorites like "Massage Situation" and "Tea Leaf Dancers".

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Los Angeles-born Flying Lotus, a.k.a. Steven Ellison, hails from a long line of musicians -- his great aunt and uncle were jazz legends Alice and John Coltrane. He made his debut in 2006 with the album 1983, impressing critics with his unique IDM-meets-hip hop sound and attracting the attention of label execs at Warp Records, who signed him the following year. His popularity continued to grow with his 2008 sophomore album Los Angeles, and in 2010 he cracked the Top 20 of the independent charts with his third album Cosmogramma. By the time he began work on his fourth album Until the Quiet Comes, his reputation as a producer had attracted big-name collaborators like Thom Yorke and Erykah Badatu. Th album was a huge critical and commercial success, topping year-end lists and earning him crossover success with a Top 40 spot on the Billboard 200. Flying Lotus thrilled fans in summer of 2014 with the announcement of his fifth album You're Dead, which he'll accompany with a highly anticipated US tour.

Flylo is a must see at concert!

    by Nervousone123 on 10/9/12Terminal 5 - New York

The only complaint I have is that I was having such a good time that it felt like time flew by! Thundercat was good and stayed out after the show for meet and greet. Flylo tried to stay out but a damn girl screamed and chased him away. I was nervous at going to the show at first because of YouTube videos. But you have to go and experience this in person.

    Omg!

by Dinesha on 10/9/12Terminal 5 - New York

I thought this concert was so awesome. I wasn't expecting Jeremiah J and Thundercat, but they were good at building up my anticipation for FlyLo. The visuals were amazing and trippy - they definitely made the music even better. I loved how the bass just made everything vibrate, it was just incredible. I had a great time.

    Doesn't Disappoint!

    by thepercentsign20dza on 10/9/12Terminal 5 - New York

Ridiculous amount of bass. Awesome set, great to hear these songs live. He really kills it and I didn't have a great view but I guess he was doing a bunch of turntable tricks as well as rocking out on the drum pads. My friend also thought he had those light show gloves on his hand since there was this cool blue glow going on by his equipment. The only thing that brought my experience down was I had some idiot leaning back on me half the concert and I was right up against the bar. The venue is cooler than I thought, the smoking roof is pretty chill.

    Sloppy show in NYC

    by Shadow412 on 10/8/12Terminal 5 - New York

Great beginning and middle, and spectacular visuals...but come on, what was with all the people on stage at the end? Not to mention, it seemed like he was playing whatever top-40 music he felt like at the end (kanye, Jay-Z, Three 6, etc)...sloppy DJing for such a great musician. On top of it all, it ended 20 minutes early...This was one of his biggest solo shows of his career! Granted, it was his birthday and my first time seeing him live. But as a veteran of many, many electronic shows (and even w/ the assistance of my good friend Molli) this was disappointing. I hope he gives his next venue a better show!

    Amazing Show

by Krishanimal on 10/8/12Terminal 5 - New York

This show was incredible. It was FlyLo's birthday and he came out to the front of the line before the show to talk to fans and a lot of us were able to get his autograph and listen to him speak about the new record. When we finally got into the venue at around 7:30, we had a little bit of a weight, before the first opener Jeremiah Jae came on. I've never listened to him, but he brought the heat and while he's not the best emcee, his production was great and really got the crowd moving. Throughout his act, FlyLo and his buddies would occasionally come on stage and Azizi Gibson even spit for us a little bit. After Jeremiah's set, there was a brief delay before Thundercat came on. Now, Thundercat is one of the best bassists in the industry today and he brought the heat. It really felt like watching someone make love to their instrument. And finally after hours of anticipation and teases, at about 10:15, Flying Lotus came on and he brought the heat! The visuals were amazing, the crowd was wild, and his set was brilliant. He weaved his own music through his influences, popular crowd favorites, and a slew of awesome drops that got us dancing. The feeling of transcendence throughout FlyLo's hour and a half long set was just amazing and he tore the club up the whole night. By the end of the show, we were all singing happy birthday to the man himself as his friends and fellow musicians joined him on stage to close out what has got to be the best birthday party I've ever been to. All in all, it was a great night and a great show.

Flying Lotus moments very high, average mediocre

by BetNooneHasThisNickname on 9/12/11Royale Boston - Boston

When FlyLo brought the heat at this show it was like swimming in a sea of tiny bubbles massaging my earlobes. However this comprised about 15 minutes of his 45 minute set (way too short) and the rest was kind of bobbing coolish hip hop tunes he liked. Appropriate for a cheap showcase but not for a 30 dollar concert. The venue as well was a little stifling (it turned into a trendy night club after the show) and the crowd was not as energized as I would have hoped. All in all, like Moses I left so happy to have had a glimpse of the promised land but wished I could have dwelled there longer.

    fucking brilliant

by ingibop on 9/11/11Royale Boston - Boston

the whole place was electrified and in the hands of mr. flying lotus, who came across as humble and honoring the great music that influenced his. it was basically a dj set (so you know what to expect). he has successfully been able to manifest his imagination through sound, which is wild, trippy, and groovy all together.

The music was great...while it lasted

    by Spb92 on 9/11/11Royale Boston - Boston

Doors opened at 6pm, for three acts, and the show was over by 9:15pm.... Flying Lotus played a little bit over an hour (less if you take away all the time he spent high-fiving the people in the front rows). Everyone thought this would last much longer, and everyone left the concert with the feeling of being ripped-off. No doubt Flying Lotus is a great artist, and his music is great.

    Flying Lotus killed it!

by ErynL on 9/11/11Royale Boston - Boston

Flying Lotus played an amazing set, and it was even more incredible that he took the time to meet and hang out with fans after! Great getting to meet him and talk with him. Also, Royale was a fantastic venue for this event!

Show ended early, venue was rude. Never going back

by DissatisfiedPatron on 9/11/11Royale Boston - Boston

In short this was the worst show I have ever attended. Unfortunately I was stuck in traffic on my way there, arrived at the venue at approximately 8:45 PM, only to see about 20 minutes of Flying Lotus before the show ended. The Venue did not post ANYWHERE that the show would be ending this early. Apparently the show started at 6PM, with flying lotus going on stage at 8pm, only to end at 9pm. As soon as the show ended the guests were PROMPTLY kicked out of the venue and ordered to disperse from there area. We were treated very rudely by the staff members. I will NEVER return to this venue ever again. I strongly recommend anyone to think twice before attending an event here.

    FlyLo Laid It Down

    by JMM213 on 9/11/11Royale Boston - Boston

Considering I only like certain Flying Lotus songs, I have to say he killed it! Wish it was way longer, hope he stops by in Boston again some time soon.

Dirty Beats but an early show

by SymplySublyme on 9/11/11Royale Boston - Boston

Flying lotus definitely brought it with some super legit songs-a few of which I hadn't heard before which was oddly refreshing. He kept things rolling and bumping and was pretty charged through the night. My only qualm is that he played SSSSOOO early. We showed up at 8:30 hearing that he was coming on at 9 and when we got there he was already up on set and laying down some stuff--and I found out later he had been up since 8:00. Which in my opinion is pretty early to start for this type of show. He got off around 9:15 so he only played an hour and 15 minute set including encore which i though was a bit week. But like i said, Flying lotus churns out some of the freshest so the 45 minute I was there were fantastic. The venue itself was cool though i found the raised platform in front of the stage a bit obnoxious. All in all and awesome night though!

    Fly Lo is Freakin' Fabulous

    by Maine4BJM on 9/11/11Royale Boston - Boston

I was simply in awe of being in the presence of the master beat-maker himself. He played a good variety of his music along with a nice set of other tracks while rocking an Aphex Twin t-shirt, which was one of the artists he opened with. I greatly enjoyed when he dropped Erykah Badu's "The Healer" and my favorite part was when Fly Lo played and sang my favorite song "Do The Astroplane." The nephew of Alice Coltrane put on an exciting and energized performance that was well worth the 5 hour round-trip drive from Maine to Boston.

    Royale as a venue

by Anonymous on 9/11/11Royale Boston - Boston

I am highly disappointed in my trip to the royale, the sound quality was poor and a little quiet. The lighting was non existent and the bar gave me in the incorrect change twice. As far as the actual performance of flying lotus, it only lasted one hour between eight and nine even though he was scheduled for a two hour set. It is my assumption that they wanted to reopen the bar for people going out clubbing at ten which is even more upsetting. I was planning on purchasing tickets to Eoto at royale on october but I will never be going to another event there.

Flying Lotus knows how to set a room on fire.

by TheTimeSmith on 9/11/11Royale Boston - Boston

The beats were sick as hell, the crowd was pumped up and Flylo knew exactly how to drive them insane. I can still feel the bass in my chest, blasting away. Can't wait for his next visit to Boston.

    Good show, poor timing.

by Anonymous on 9/11/11Royale Boston - Boston

Doors at 6, main act started at 8 and was over by 10. The performance was unbelievably good, but the venue was hosting another event immediately after the show. Shows should start later, and have more than an hour of opening acts. Flying Lotus is a big name and came to Boston just to perform at this show - he is not on tour. I think the concert was a lot more important than the "club night" afterwards and should have more time. That being said the venue, staff, and performances were top notch.

    Flying Lotus=amazing Friday night

by TBrice on 9/11/11Royale Boston - Boston

I went to Flying Lotus at the Royale on Friday, thinking that it would be an ordinary chillwave dj set...I was wrong; with an amalgamation of beats that was sensational, flying lotus had the ability to keep the crowd going through the whole set, never once losing his energy or messing up a crossfade; loved it, go see it for yourself

    stevensteven327?

by andyhempy on 8/4/11music box - Los angeles

i saw them live and agree the crowd was annoying as hell, talking all through austin peralta and thundercats set, but as for turning down the music... that big guy that kept coming out was with the company that provides all the sound equipment, and he had to keep turning him down becase FLYLO was overloading the sound system... they always have to turn him down a little bit!
