Florida Gators Men's Basketball History
The first tip-off for the Gators was in 1915, when C. J. McCoy was head coach of both the men's basketball and football programs at the school. The University of Florida was a founding member of the Southeastern Conference in 1932. It wasn't until after Florida built their current indoor sports facility, the O'Connell Center, in 1980, that the Gators played in their first NCAA tournament in 1987.
Under the Gators’ first full-time basketball coach Norm Sloan, Florida qualified for six consecutive postseason matchups, with three appearances in the NIT and March Madness tournaments apiece between 1984 and 1989. Sloan’s tenure also delivered a run to the Sweet Sixteen during the school’s first NCAA tournament berth in 1987 and their first SEC regular season championship in 1989.
From 1996 to 2015, head coach Billy Donovan led the Gators to nine straight NCAA Tournaments starting in 1999, plus six regular season conference championships, four SEC tournament championships, four Final Four appearances and two NCAA championships, in 2006 and 2007. The Florida Gators men’s basketball team won their third national championship as well as their fifth SEC tournament championship in 2025.
More than two dozen Florida Gators have gone on to become professional basketball players in the NBA. The Gators have a long-running in-state rivalry with the Florida State Seminoles, and their annual contest is the only out-of-conference game for both of the two oldest college teams in the state.

It was a great all around experience. I hope to go to another game next year.
Had a nice time with my son at the most recent UF basketball game. However, seats were obstructed by hand rails (was not noted on the tickets we purchased). If I had known the seats had this view - I would've tried to find another set of seats. The game was great from the atmosphere to the food items.
Great seats and family fun. The seats were amazingly comfortable and the court was easy to see.
Good, unimpeded view of the court to watch the Florida Gators dominate!
I’m from Curaçao visiting my daughter tachar study at UF. I Enjoy the game of basketball so every Tine I come to Gainesville If there is a game I go to the basketball game. There was a couple of wasten balls of the UF team that could have been avoided. The Miami team was not so hard to beat that’s why l found some of the mistakes unnessasary.
UF hosted UCF in the 1st round of NIT tourney. First time to UF campus. Beautiful campus, nice arena, friendly staff, and a great game made for a fun experience!
Great venue and fan environment. Very exciting game.
Had a great time the seats were good and we won that’s all that matters
Our seats were great, and the game in the cheerleaders a great and spectators were great
I went to a florida gator game and it was so much fun. I would give ticketmaster a high review, I prefer paper tickets, but as far as virtual tickets go, this was great.
They were severely understaffed and it took 15 minutes to go 50 feet in line to get through security and into the arena. We ended up missing the first 5 minutes of the game because of this. I’ve been to sold out events at the arena that didn’t take that long to enter!! Half the concessions were closed also. If you are going to host an event, do it right or don’t do it at all!! $$$
Great time, great seats & great game. We were in the 1st row of the 2nd level at half court.
We had good seats close to the action, facing the teams and announcer. The Gators put on a great show, trouncing their opponents. Snacked on an extremely large pretzel and cheered with the partisan crowd. All in all, a wonderful evening.
Seats were great!!! There was what looked to be a long line, but they get you in the arena very quickly, and there's a ton of people to help you find your seats. They've redone the arena since the last time I was there and it's a great experience. Well worth it. Will be going back. And......GO GATORS!!!
Exciting game from the very beginning! Great music, I like when we can sing along. UF band was great 😊
Helpful attendant, easy to find seats, great band music and exciting game, loved going into overtime and the Gators won!
Such a great experience! Thank U, Gators Basketball!
I’ve watched the games at home, but nothing compares to the 2 times I went in person. There’s so much energy in that building and those cheerleaders can get it too!
Nothing like being in the building. I taped the game at home and watched it, but nothing takes the place of being there live.
First time seeing the Gators play in Gainesville !! We had an awesome time and hope to do this again when we are in the area! Ushers at the arena were extremely pleasant and helpful. Normally I don’t see that in professional sporting events. Thanks for the great time!!
