FATHER JOHN MISTY IN CONCERT:

Father John Misty brings folk into the 21st century with each eclectic element he incorporates into his unique sound, and his charismatic showmanship makes his live shows a must-see. When he's strumming his way through ballads like ìThe Night Josh Tillman Came to Our Apartmentî his emotional vocals and heartbreaking lyrics make alt-country fans feel right at home. But heís just as comfortable strutting his stuff to noisy, spiteful rockers like ìThe Ideal Husbandî and turning out full-blown electronica on tracks like the transcendently beautiful ìTrue Affectionî. With his singular combination of Americana traditions with cutting-edge sounds, Father John Misty is a folk icon for a new generation, and fans won't want to miss the chance to see him conjure up his immersive sound in concert.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Before making his debut as Father John Misty in 2012, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Joshua Tillman was busy recording late-night demos in the Seattle-area. After self-releasing two CD-R demos he attracted the attention of Fargo Records, and in 2006 the label released his debut album Minor Works. In 2008 Tillman was tapped by indie darlings Fleet Foxes, who needed a drummer for the recording of their self-titled debut. Though he gained widespread exposure and success with Fleet Foxes, Tillman left to pursue his creative reinvention as Father John Misty in 2012. After a warm reception from critics and fans for his debut album Fear Fun, he set out on his first solo headlining tour. His 2015 follow-up album I Love You, Honeybear was a breakthrough success, appearing on best-of lists from esteemed sources like Pitchfork, Roughtrade, and Stereogum. As he continues to breathe new life into indie folk with his wide-ranging influences and poetic gifts, Father John Mistyís electrifying performances have fans eagerly anticipating whatís next from the innovative troubadour.

  • Father John Misty

    by Shelbsthomcat on 7/29/13Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Excellent show! The sound was good, the band seemed to having a great time, and when Josh requested the disco ball be turned on, the Terminal 5 staff did so immediately! Great time.

Really great performer! Unexpected style and wonderful charisma.

This Man Has Some Dance Moves!! And the singing's not too bad either. J. Tillman is such a great performer and he has an incredible band. They pretty much play the majority of their album Fear Fun and its even better live

  • Father John Misty was Heavenly

    by Bojangles123456789 on 7/27/13Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

Totally off the hook! The Father is a great performer. Exudes coolness. He is also quite wacky, self-deprecating, and funny. He also is quite "aware" of how ridiculous he is. It was an entertaining show. Definitely a lot of fun. However, if you don't like concerts where A LOT of smoking goes on, probably don't go. If you like Father John Misty and/or similar music, totally check him out.

  • Best Stage Presence

    by DylanJunkie on 7/27/13Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Father John Misty is incredible in person. He's really interactive with the crowd. He tells stories and jokes. He's not the kind of musician who just stands there and sings. He's all over the stage, throwing the microphone stand all over the place, and he's a pretty dope dancer. Terminal 5 is also my favorite venue and I know Father John was happy to figure out it wasn't in a airport.

  • Father John Misty ... Great Show!

    by AndyRGuitarGuy on 7/27/13Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I got into FJM's debut album Fear Fun several months ago (months after hearing my brother rave abut it) and I was hooked instantly. I'm a huge fan of brilliant musician/producer Jonathan Wilson who produced the album and along with Father John Misty (nee Josh Tillman) played nearly every instrument. I saw some live YouTube clips a few months back and had some doubts as to whether Josh would have a band up to the task of recreating/interpreting the brilliant sonic and musical range of the record. Well, I was mighty impressed. His 5-piece backing band nailed the sound and vibe of the record, and lead guitarist Benji (something) even took it up a few notches, with steel guitar licks and soaring leads. As for Josh, he is an engaging performer, with his deft mix of musicianship (great singer), humor and enjoyably awkward goofball antics. SEE THIS SHOW!!

  • Seriously, What is this?

    by MusicBud2103 on 6/17/13Bonnaroo 2013 - Manchester, TNRating: 1 out of 5

I had very high hopes for FJM. I would consider myself a strong fan of his, really enjoying theFJM act but also loving his earlier J. Tillman. If J. Tillman from 2010 could see himself now, I think he'd completely quit the music industry to save him from this wreck that he is becoming. His set was the worst I saw at the entire Bonnaroo 2013 festival. I expected the act and banter, but the person I saw on stage was an exhausted, over-drugged, and mediocre excuse for this "rock star" who has sprung up in the last year. Not only was he a jerk, but his music skills had completely slipped as well. He took most songs down a few steps, spoke most lyrics, and added non-sense words to the ends of beautifully written lines. A group of friends and I agreed that he didn't remind us of how great of a musician he is, or what great things await him, but instead it almost seemed like he hated every minute of his own set and decided to play it off as a crummy karaoke singer. Disappointed

  • Benji Lysaght sounded amazing

Wow. Great band. The standout to me was Benji Lysaght. What great tone!!!! Made me check out Brandon Flowers.

  • Father John Misty brought it!

    by MattyNel83 on 5/14/13Masquerade - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

FJM came to the Masquerade and Misty'd everyone! His album tracks took a new life onstage. Add that to the cover of The Beatles (Lennon's) Happiness Is A Warm Gun and a new song, I Love You, Honey Bear, to close the show out made it a pure night of good rock n roll. Great banter as well. I'll see FJM again, that's for sure.

Josh Tillman is an absolute wonder. The music was phenomenal. The show was fantastical. There was a palpable energy throughout the venue. It's not a matter of if I see fjm again. Only when.

  • Josh Tillman is a dancing fool!

by DipseaBoy on 1/29/13The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

This was the third (and best) Father John Misty show that I've seen. Josh is a great songwriter, has a great voice and a very tight band, but what really separates him from his talented brethren is his electric stage presence. He's funny, self-mocking, insightful, and entirely spontaneous. His crazy dance moves make each song something like karaoke in an insane asylum -- and I mean that as a compliment! I've seen a ton of live music over the years, but I've never enjoyed a band more than Father John Misty.

  • FJM was more than just another concert.

by TJENYC on 1/18/13Webster Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Over the past year I have attended several really good concerts in Brooklyn and Manhattan and have to say this one would rate as one of the best. J. Tillman (a.k.a. Father John Misty) put on quite the show. Not only a fantastic lyricist but amazing vocalist and to top it all off a great entertainer. If you love the album Fear Fun, seeing these songs performed live takes that listening experience to an entirely different level.

  • FJM is a Must see

Fantastic show, FJM was outstanding, entertaining and fun as always! Great venue and good selection of drinks!

  • Father John Misty is an amazing performer

by soulshine1128 on 12/31/12El Rey Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

This was one of my favorite shows ever. The venue was great, and FJM was an absolutely engaging performer. He kept all eyes on him as he danced, sang, and made comedic banter between songs. The musicians were fantastic, including a string quartet, and I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

  • FJM rocked the Fine Line!

by SwinginStevie on 11/2/12Fine Line Music Cafe - MinneapolisRating: 5 out of 5

Great show! While I have already been enjoying Fear Fun for the last few months, it really came alive in concert. This is what seeing live music is all about....and you could tell that he was really engaged in the moment. He's got swivel hips...

Amazing show. Best of the year. I wih it was 21+ not 18+. That almost ruined it for me. Being a very small short woman. I have listened to him for quiet some time and I feel the young crowd ruined the experience of an amazing moment. Huge tall loud guy being belligerent in front of me. If not for the young crowd it was the best show I've seen in a year or so. I frequent shows multiple times a year and know some of the artists. Please keep 21+

Really talented stage performer. Great singer, great songs. Very funny stage presence.

This show was amazing. Father John Misty is a genius... he's hilarious and incredibly talented. I'd give it ten stars if I could.
