About

ELVIS COSTELLO IN CONCERT:

He may be the "other Elvis," but when it comes to clever, madcap,  personality-drenched rock and roll, there is only one Elvis Costello. From his days in the British punk and new wave scene to his pioneering role in the rise of power pop, Costello has repeatedly broken the mold, appealing to both cult and mainstream audiences. On tour as a one-man-band in  2013, he displayed serious performance chops, making a backing band seem obsolete with beautifully stripped-down versions of classics like "Allison" and "What's So Funny About Peace, Love and Understanding." Hitting the road again in 2014, Costello will be treating fans to his acclaimed solo show as well as select dates with his band the Imposters.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

London-born Declan Patrick MacManus, better known as Elvis Costello, began playing music at an early age under the influence of his father, a talented musician and bandleader. After playing in a pub rock band in his early twenties, he released his solo debut album My Aim is True in 1977 to moderate success, landing in the Top 20 in the UK and Top 40 in the US. Shortly after forming his backing band the Attractions, Costello  released his breakthrough 1979 album Armed Forces, a No. 2 hit in the UK and an enduring new wave classic. In addition to his knack for catchy, clever songwriting, Costello's provocative performances, pointed political lyrics, and anti-authority attitude helped fuel his success. With more than 30 studio albums under his belt, Costello's impressive run continues with another highly anticipated tour in 2014.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Simply an amazing show. So many great songs, and the man just doesn't stop! A great experience!"

"It's amazing that all of the talent on display was coming from one man. He played for nearly two and a half hours and not a second was wasted. Performers like him are a rarity."

"Quirky, eclectic and utterly entertaining. Elvis' voice is as distinctive as ever, and while he played many of his classics, the set list included many songs that were throwbacks to his father's time. I have a whole new appreciation for the man's guitar talents."

    elvis and the city lights

by muffinb on 7/15/09Beacon Theatre - New York

elvis costello's performance was undeniably excellent. his ability to connect with the audience is sincere, his talent is obvious and his style is unparalleled. The group of musicians gathered on stage was skilled and their performance was nearly flawless. the beacon theater is beautiful, the staff was friendly and helpful- nice to be at a show that feels so intimate. The big downer for me was the unfortunate experience of being seated behind a middle aged couple in heat- making out and groping each other throughout the show was bad enough- but the woman also wore a half bottle of bad perfume that nearly asphyxiated the entire section. There were a few other uptight concert-goers seated nearby, perhaps on edge because of the perfume poisoning - it seemed every other person in the area was looking for a fight, but nevertheless the show itself was great.

    Elvis rethinks-Brilliantly

by swifty2 on 7/15/09Beacon Theatre - New York

Excellent musical interplay went hand in hand with re-imaginings of classic Costello songs from My Aim is True.

    EC+Sugarcanes@The Beacon

by PatMinNYC on 7/14/09Beacon Theatre - New York

The Sugarcanes together with the incomparable Mr. MacManus were a pure delight to listen to. EC was in good voice and the backup harmonies by Jim Lauderdale were as clean and crisp as the studio versions on the new CD.EC is the ultimate showman! He continues to make great music and associate himself with first class musicians like the Sugarcanes and Mr. Lauderdale. You never walk away disappointed from an EC performance - he gives you so much more than your moneys worth. The new material from the new CD was well represented and the re-worked older classic material (Sugar Versions) backed up by the Sugarcanes confirmed the musical genius of everyone on the stage. It was a combined performance I will not soon forget.

    Elvis Costello was highly disappointing

by marina888 on 7/14/09Beacon Theatre - New York

I was so very excited to get tickets to an Elvis Costello concert. Being out of work, I really choose very carefully the venue I will attend and this concert was something I was looking forward to tremendously. I remember listening, dancing to, waiting for new songs of his to come out in the eighties. This was going to be a trip down the memory lane. Instead, Mr.Costello chose, arrogantly to play only his new music, which after a couple of songs became just unbearable to listen to. I found this to be a total disregard for his fans, who were waiting to sing along to their favourite numbers, to look at each other with shining eyes remembering their youth. I left early, after falling asleep to one of the numbers and I found out that I was not the only one. There were a lot of people leaving along with me. Mr.Costello: we love you, but you have to show your love for us as well.

    Elvis Costello amazes

by NYMo on 7/14/09Beacon Theatre - New York

First, I'm a bluegrass fan. So when I heard Elvis was teaming up with Jerry Douglas and Stuart Duncan, I had to buy the record and see the concert. For me, it was just what I was hoping for - an evening of great music, great lyrics, great musicianship. It got better as it went along, and stayed true to the spirit of bluegrass music. Elvis Costello is a true musician and incredible songwriter.

    Good Show

by scottda2 on 7/14/09Beacon Theatre - New York

It was a good show. Wish he'd utilized the country guys a little more and been a little more twangy. Country's not my thing, but if you're going to go with a style, then go. Otherwise, great re-works of some classics and good new tunes too. Had a great time.

    Wonderful Show

by Rabbi on 7/14/09Beacon Theatre - New York

When you go see an Elvis show you never know what to expect. This show was no different. elvis, the band, the songs were all amazing. I felt like I was sitting in a small saloon somewhere in Tulsa. elvis' voice was, the hamonies were melodic and beautiful . The renditions of the old soner songs wer fantastic . He did several numbers from King of america which is one of my favorite albums.I've seen him 40 or 50 times and they just keep getting better and I can't wait for his next show. Who knows, it might be a Latin album knowing E.C. immense talent and diversity.

    Never disappoints

by Michalex on 7/14/09Beacon Theatre - New York

Elvis is always changing and this tour was no exception. Playing with the "Sugarcanes" this show had a country feel that was played to perfection with the new band members. Not only were they able to play the new record but also played old songs that fit there style. I would recommend that you go out of your way to see them If they come to you neck of the woods.

    Outstanding Elvis!

by JBHNYC on 7/14/09Beacon Theatre - New York

This was just a terrific alternative kind of Elvis show, not the typical Greatest Hits or New Album type of show. The band was tight and the selectiosn from King of America and the new album flowed beautiully.

    Intense & Passionate

by theo45 on 7/14/09Beacon Theatre - New York

The intense Mr Costello's performance at the Beacon Theatre (06/10/2009) was nothing short of brilliant. This blend of new & vintage songs performed in a way that gave the music new life and vitality. Elvis's vocal arrangements were spendid and with the accompanied musicians made the evening magical & mysterious.

    Elvis Never Disappoints

by akatch on 7/14/09Beacon Theatre - New York

I've seen Elvis about a dozen times over the years and he never fails to deliver. This was an "acoustic" set drawing from his latest release, Secret, Profane and Sugarcane and included one the show's highlights, a stirring renditions of How Deep Is the Red. Elvis also reached back through his large body of work and played just about everything you'd think would translate well to an all acoustic set including some you think might not such as, Everyday I Write the Book. All in all a fantastic show in one of NYC's most beautiful theaters.

    Elvis is King

by YogSothoth on 7/14/09Beacon Theatre - New York

If in 1977 you had told me that 30 years later I'd be loving Elvis with a large country/bluegrass ensemble, covering Merle Haggard tunes, I'd have been um, ah, skeptical. We're always up for whatever EC is doing in a given year -- but this was among the best concerts I've ever seen.

    E's Southern Swoon

by Geerod on 7/14/09Beacon Theatre - New York

If you're an Elvis fan (which I am) then you'll enjoy this show. I've always appreciated his musical ventures down south exposing his & our country roots. As Elvis has worn many musical hats throughout his career, this show features Elvis at his country fried best. Obviously the new album Secret, Sugarcane & Profane is featured with well rounded performances from Elvis & the band. Since we were well behaved, Elvis even threw in a few of his classics for all to sing along to toward the end of the show. Like fine wine, Elvis continues to get better with age. His musicianship & stage presence prove how in command he really is & how comfortable he is with himself.

    Genious

by PFAC on 7/14/09Beacon Theatre - New York

Costello's concert at the Beacon was a showcase to the genius that he is. Incredible performance by one of the most creative artists of today. The new arrangements for traditional Costello songs, such as Allison and Blame it on Cain, coupled with the songs from the new album worked exceptionally well. Costello is the King!
