Edmonton Oilers History

The origin of the Oilers goes back to 1972, when they were one of the founding franchises of the World Hockey Association. Once the league folded in 1979, they were one of four teams absorbed into the National Hockey League. It didn't take long for them to establish dominance in the league, reeling off five Stanley Cup Championships in seven years. They are tied with the Pittsburgh Penguins for the most championships since the NHL-WHA merger.

The Oilers of the '80s were a phenomenal dynasty with a roster that reads like the Hockey Hall of Fame: Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Paul Coffey, Glenn Anderson, Grant Fuhr, Jari Kurri, plus a stellar supporting cast. Gretzky scored 92 goals in 1982, breaking Phil Esposito’s record for number of goals in a single season. He also recorded a record 215 points in 1985. During his time with the Oilers as center and team captain, Gretzky led the team to four Stanley Cup championships (1984, 1985, 1987, and 1988). By the time Gretzky finished his time with the Oilers, he held or shared a total of 49 NHL records.

In all, the Edmonton Oilers have appeared in the Stanley Cup Final eight times.

  • Terrible value

    by Moser88 on 11/26/14Rexall Place - EdmontonRating: 1 out of 5

I haven't been to an Oilers game in 25 years. Two tix cost $275 and the seats weren't that great. I'm not upset they lost, but they played worse every power play. It was not good hockey. I think I'll spend my money at Jubilations or something similar instead. Better value and more entertaining.

  • Unforgettable

I took my dad to see the 1984 Stanley Cup Champions. He's watched them since 1980, and still a loyal fan to this day. I was so proud to share the experience with him, to hear the stories, and feel the pride coming from all the fans in Edmonton. The Oilers put on an amazing party, and I couldn't have been happier with the entire night!

  • Still awesome after all these years

by afanevermore on 10/13/14Rexall Place - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

Very enjoyable evening of camaraderie and stories. Very well organized, started EXACTLY on time (very impressive). The only unfortunate thing I could mention is that it was too bad that our current team could not attend. It would have been a great thing for them to see, and to experience how the fans treated and were treated by this team. Entertainment was a bonus, all very enjoyable.

  • by Sam1979 on 4/15/14Rexall Place - EdmontonRating: 3 out of 5

Would be nice if there were some big warning when you are buying standing seats. I didn't realize until I went to print them off that we were standing.

  • by Goat0 on 4/9/14Rexall Place - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

We had a great evening!! It's was nice not having to stand in line for our food and drinks.

  • by Anonymous on 1/24/14Rexall Place - EdmontonRating: 4 out of 5

Experience was great, however, seats could have been better equipped. First time with standing seats, had a great view but there are a few things that could be improved on. I would have liked to seen a table like other standing seats in the building, we had no area to put phones, food and drinks on. While enjoying the game my elbow was hit from a guy walking behind me, this caused my drink to spill all over my phone, I was not pleased! I think this could have been prevented by allowing more space between the wall and standing seats. I would go to another game with the exception of purchasing different seats, not standing seats.

Jerseys not available on jersey night. Not the best but they have made more than reasonable accomodations.

  • One down on the Bucket List...

by Oycie on 9/30/13Cox Convention Center Arena - Oklahoma CityRating: 4 out of 5

Great to be able to watch NHL teams w/o going out of town or just watch on TV !! Wish I'd known sooner so could've had better seats. Definitely need to get lower seating next time.

  • Dallas Stars Edmondton hockey gme

by mmiler on 9/30/13Cox Convention Center Arena - Oklahoma CityRating: 4 out of 5

Venue was great. We paid for more expensive tickets, 4 rows up from the ice. Wish there was more monitoring of tickets and seats. In the rows in front of us, there were empty seats and quite a few different people sat in the seats, and it was obvious they were not their seats.

  • Awesome

by OkieStarsFan on 9/30/13Cox Convention Center Arena - Oklahoma CityRating: 5 out of 5

Had an awesome time. Pretty good seats. It was a preseason hockey game being held in Oklahoma City (of all places) so I wasn't expecting much. I was actually blown away at how much fun it was. Course the Stars won so that could be skewing my opinion a bit. If the NHL ever tries this again folks should check it out.

  • Great game, good facilities, slow food service

by fantasydave on 9/30/13Cox Convention Center Arena - Oklahoma CityRating: 5 out of 5

Arena was nice, parking was very convenient in underground garage. The game itself was awesome. The concession food was mediocre and overpriced, with a VERY long wait time. 30 minutes for some chicken strips and 6 fries is ridiculous.

  • by mythical on 9/30/13Cox Convention Center Arena - Oklahoma CityRating: 4 out of 5

It was a good showcase of what training camp players can do with the skills they have.

Generally a very good experience, but we were VERY disappointed at the number of empty seats, especially in the lower (better) sections. We were able to get two seats in section 436 but would have gladly purchased more expensive seats had they been available. C'mon, OKC! This is PROFESSIONAL BIG TIME HOCKEY! Either fill the arena or make the seats available for purchase to those of us who want to get closer to the action!
