Edmonton Oilers History

The origin of the Oilers goes back to 1972, when they were one of the founding franchises of the World Hockey Association. Once the league folded in 1979, they were one of four teams absorbed into the National Hockey League. It didn't take long for them to establish dominance in the league, reeling off five Stanley Cup Championships in seven years. They are tied with the Pittsburgh Penguins for the most championships since the NHL-WHA merger.

The Oilers of the '80s were a phenomenal dynasty with a roster that reads like the Hockey Hall of Fame: Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Paul Coffey, Glenn Anderson, Grant Fuhr, Jari Kurri, plus a stellar supporting cast. Gretzky scored 92 goals in 1982, breaking Phil Esposito’s record for number of goals in a single season. He also recorded a record 215 points in 1985. During his time with the Oilers as centre and team captain, Gretzky led the team to four Stanley Cup championships (1984, 1985, 1987, and 1988). By the time Gretzky finished his time with the Oilers, he held or shared a total of 49 NHL records.

In all, the Edmonton Oilers have appeared in the Stanley Cup Final seven times.

Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place

NHL superstar Connor McDavid and NHL legends Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier opened the doors to the spectacular Rogers Place in downtown Edmonton in October 2016. McDavid and his Edmonton Oilers bring excitement to Rogers Place nightly, with the statue of The Great One standing guard just outside. The state-of-the-art Rogers Place replaced the aging Rexall Place, and resulted in an explosion of business and residential growth in downtown's ICE District.

    Sad

by Mary on 5/17/23Rogers Place - Edmonton

It is such a privilege to be able to attend an NHL game at Rogers Place. I was so excited to attend game 6 of the Oilers Knights series, as a Mothers Day gift. The atmosphere was electrifying. And losing is a part of life. I'm not complaining about that. I will not attend another game. The officiating was so bad and decided the outcome of the game - as it did in game 5. For the facility itself, I will say again, both mens and ladies washrooms take one entire intermission plus 20 seconds into the next period.

    first play off game

by hockey guy on 5/13/23Rogers Place - Edmonton

this is my first NHL live playoff hockey game. I am 55 years old and played coached the game I love this game. I won three tickets on a draw, and then made my way to Edmonton It took eight hours to drive . Got there and walk into the Roger place. with people yelling on the streets go oilers go in Rogers Place was so easy to get around. it’s a beautiful place we had seats in the sports net lounge. watched, warm-ups and then listen to the national anthem. The place was vibrating. it was pretty sick. The game was amazing better than I expected. I loved every minute of it.. got to see you what was happening behind the plays of the game it was awesome. Game is over oilers won made my way out experience. I’ll never forget. Man, I love this game.

    Upper bowl seats

by HG on 5/13/23Rogers Place - Edmonton

The Oilers game was awesome but the upper bowl seats are way too small to sit in. I had a very large lady sitting next to me who was spilling into my seat. I was uncomfortable the entire evening. I will never purchase upper bowl seats again.

    Sweet upgrade

by Churchy on 5/1/23Rogers Place - Edmonton

Gotta say kudos to the Oilers gameday staff and Guest Services. I recently had shoulder surgery and am wearing a sling. This was not really conducive to sitting in the middle of a row, squeezed in tight. I asked at Guest services if they might have a different seat available to sit in, and I was told it was a sold out game, and that wasn't possible. I appreciated the effort and was walking away when the manager told me to hang tight for 5 minutes. She came back and moved me to The Sky Lounge! I had lots of room with no worry of being bumped on my surgical shoulder, and had a blast! Thanks for elevating my experience from great, to SWEET!

    Fun but too loud!

by Old Coot on 4/4/23Rogers Place - Edmonton

The game itself was all we could have asked for. The team played really well. We saw a McDavid goal and a Draisaitl hat trick including a shorty for his 50th of the year. That being said, if we do go back I will be wearing earplugs. I found the pumped in music, (especially during the warmups and before the start of periods) uncomfortably loud and quite frankly unnecessary. It's not like I'm unfamiliar with loud music - I grew up in the 1970s and enjoyed many live concerts. The Oilers have GREAT fans. So turn the music down a bit and let the fans be heard!

    Awesome game

by Gina on 3/28/23Rogers Place - Edmonton

Pretty much everything was awesome, but food prices are crazy and there is no clear set up for where you’re supposed to line up for bathrooms so it can get confusing.

    Waste of Money

by HockeyFan on 1/31/23Rogers Place - Edmonton

The new Edmonton arena is a horrible fan experience. From the lack of effort given by both teams to the overpriced everything along with nothing to entertain you throughout the commercial breaks or intermissions I recommend no family spend a dollar there. I promise to never go to a game in Edmonton again for as long as I live.

    Disappointing experience

by Oilfan on 1/28/23Rogers Place - Edmonton

Food and Drinks were overpriced and poor selection. Lines were long for food and washrooms. In game entertainment outside of the actual game was boring and un-engaging.

The lights, the noise, the positive mood of the fans. Great experience in the loudest barn in the league! GO OILERS! Can’t wait for a playoff run , to really get Rogers Place rocking!

Great game between the Avs & Oilers

by Keith M on 1/10/23Rogers Place - Edmonton

I enjoyed the game with my son & grandsons. Our seats had a good view of the entire surface. Great atmosphere that helped us really get into the game. Concession prices are a bit high for my liking!

    Canucks at Oilers

by Daveyboy on 12/26/22Rogers Place - Edmonton

The phone app worked well, much to my old brain's relief. I spent a lifetime dealing with paper tickets, so the new technology is a bit intimidating. And the Canucks woke up in the second to make the game a beauty.

    Horrible

by Not a fan on 12/1/22Rogers Place - Edmonton

Seats so small that's fully grown man could not comfortably sit in then. Stuck in front of a family who did not control their children. Basically sat there and had the kids kicking my chair and screaming in my ear for the entire first period when I said enough and left.
