About

2013 saw a double release for Dream Theater: a self-titled studio album and Live at Luna Park, an album that features material taken from the band's A Dramatic Turn of Events tour in 2012. This latter release is a treat, featuring two DVDs and three CDs of material that highlights the prog metal theatrics delighting ticket buyers for over 25 years. These theatrics revolve around the band's consummate artistry. Dream Theater's prog roots compel them to focus on musical craftsmanship as the driving force of their performance. However, serious musicianship is not without its spark of playfulness. A love of quirky humor often pops up when the band performs in concert. It's not uncommon for ticket buyers to be pleasantly surprised by alternating set lists, musical quotes and spontaneous bursts of improvisation. Members of the band have even swapped instruments mid-set just to keep things fresh.

Dream Theater's newest, self-titled album contains all the elements that make the band stand out among their peers. The opening, "False Awakening Suite," sets a cinematic tone for the rest of the tracks. The hard-driving "The Enemy Inside" invokes shades of classic Iron Maiden, yet with Dream Theater's own unique twist. The band has been going hard and strong since 1985, when three music school graduates started the band as a tribute to their heroes. Armed with a stack of potent demos, they hit the NYC circuit, shopping tapes and strengthening their live act. Each new album chronicles their steady artistic progression, as constant touring helps to keep things fresh and their musicianship alive. Dream Theater's music is a lively blend of heavy metal and prog rock, with jazz and classical elements thrown in for a healthy amount of spice.

    Progressive Nation 09 was AMAZING!!!!!!!

by Fico on 7/26/09Hard Rock Live Orlando - Orlando

This was the second time that I've been to this venue for Progressive Nation, and this year was definitely much more proggressive than last year, and it was all amazing. Scale the Summit and BigElf were amazing and left me wanting more of them. Zappa Plays Zappa was just crazy and amazing. Must definitely worth the wait since it was the first time I've seen them live. But of course the masters, DreamTheater, were undescribable. Just inbelievable and the crew at the venue were wonderful and friendly as well. I will be definitely attending the 3rd Prog Nation tour. All Nation Under Prog!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    All four bands were great

by 3boyjen on 7/26/09Hard Rock Live Orlando - Orlando

All four bands were great. Zappa was awesome, he makes playing the guitar look so easy. Dream Theatre was unbelievable. The set was super high energy, the musicians were all fantastic. I took son for b-day and I yelled louder than he did. See it again in a heart beat. we flew in from Houston to see them and we were not disappointed one bit.

    More Zappa

by heyjimmy on 7/26/09Hard Rock Live Orlando - Orlando

Although I liked Dream Theater I wish ZPZ had been able to do a longer set. ZPZ continues to get better everytime I see them.

    Progressively Mediocre

by MPfan on 7/26/09Hard Rock Live Orlando - Orlando

The shows lineup is nothing to complain about at the venue however the show was better before dream theater took the stage. We were sitting in the center left section on the bottom. The sound was good all the way through the show a solid 10/10. My only problem was that i didnt order tickets fast enough to get the top floor seating and my girlfriend that was with me at the show is around 5'3... So of course when dream theater came on everybody that had chairs on the floor stood up and we instantly had a hindered show because of the view. I myself at 5'10 also had issues seeing, but this was definitely the only concern. Everything else was very solid all the way around.

    Dream Theater.......... Amazing performance!

by RobbieP on 7/26/09Hard Rock Live Orlando - Orlando

Not only are these guys the best musicians on every instrument they play. They have outstanding music, great stage presence and video. The total package in entertainment. It's like they hand picked the best guitarist, best bassist, and best drummer in the world then assembled them into one band. I highly recommend seeing the show. I'm already looking forward to next year.

    Dream Theater Amazing! Venue sucks

by JagOfTroy on 7/26/09Hard Rock Live Orlando - Orlando

The live performance was great but the venue has really gone down hill at the Orlando Hard Rock at Universal. They removed the standing room around the stage and they make you pay extra now to sit in a chair next to the stage.

Zappa Vs Zappa Blew away Dream Theater

by sn1per on 7/26/09Hard Rock Live Orlando - Orlando

I'm a huge dream theater fan. The played awesome, and the light show was great, and portnoy was AWESOME! But the set was so short, and they played none of their older stuff really. Zappa vs Zappa blew me away though. The performance was great! diverse it left me wanting more of them Big Elf good too, some nice clean rock/metal classic sounding with a touch of weridness. Great show portnoy is god!

Great concert, Dream theater was brilliant, a great mix of classic songs and the best of the new Black Clouts and Silver Lining CD. All back up bands were incredible. Scale the Summit was an amazing surprise i wasn't expecting them to be so good. Recommend it for any Progressive fan!

Dream Theater and Zappa Plays Zappa are Amazing!

by apkguitar on 7/26/09Hard Rock Live Orlando - Orlando

This was, by far the best concert I have ever been to. The first two bands were decent, nothing too special, but DT and ZPZ were both amazing. They both put on a great show.

    Zappa plays Zappa/Dream Theater

by mitch09 on 7/26/09Hard Rock Live Orlando - Orlando

Awesome group of talented musicians. Even "the new guy" (how dweezil introduced the new singer) was great. Incredible percussion, sax, keyboards, bass guitar, rythym guitar and lead guitar. FZ would be proud. I took along a friend who was not a big FZ fan and he was totally impressed..."it way exceeded my expectations". I can only hope the Dweezil keeps the music alive by continuing to tour. Next year I hope to make 2 shows. Dream Theater on the other hand was not so good. I left after 3 songs.

    Best of 2 DT shows!

by dacampora on 7/26/09Hard Rock Live Orlando - Orlando

I'm from Connecticut but had recently relocated to Florida and I was excited to see DT in a new venue. I wasn't looking forward to seeing anyone except DT, aside from maybe Scale the Summit because they are young and talented, but we arrived too late to see them anyways. Big Elf was awful. The bass was too loud, the organ was way overdone, the vocals were borderline yelling instead of singing, and I couldn't see the drummer. Zappa plays Zappa, on the other hand was incredible. I am a drummer and have a training background in jazz, and the solo sections in each of the Zappa tunes were incredible. Dweezil didn't play as much as I thought he would, but his solos were very good. The standout in that band was the female keyboardist/flautist/saxophonist/vocalist. She had the best voice in the entire band (6 of the 7 band members sang), and she had many many incredible solos, including one playing the sax and keyboard at the same time. Their musicality and proficiency reminded me of the Australian Pink Floyd; unforgettable. Dream Theater was an incredible end to an already incredible show. The lighting, first of all, was the best I have seen at any concert I've ever been to. The show was very fast paced, the band only stopping once after the third song to introduce themselves. They opened with the epic intro off their new album "A Nightmare to Remember," before catapulting into the synth intro to the song "Prophets of War." The video montage accompanying the next song,"Sacrificed Sons," was at the same time sorrowful and uplifting, being that the video, as well as the lyrics to this "Octavarium" masterpiece are about the tragedy on September 11, 2001. After taking a quick break, DT dove into their only ballad of the show, "Misunderstood," and then formally introduced their new album by playing the single "Rite of Passage." Surprisingly for a new album, everyone there knew all the lyrics, and sang along to the entire song. The instrumental of the set was next, playing "The Dance of Eternity" off of the band's epic "Scenes from a Memory" album. Dream Theater ended their set with a great crowd participation song "Take the Time." The band even allowed the audience to sing a few of the lines alone, before tearing back into the last chorus for an incredible epic ending. The band then walked off stage, just like any other DT show in the past, and the screams of the crowd (in a room that wasn't even close to sold out) were far louder than the loudest of the music that night. Then, out of the darkness, the crowd hears the opening acoustic guitar notes to the band's (in my opinion) magnum opus, and the third song off the new album, "The Count of Tuscany." Dream Theater ripped into the 20+ minute epic for their encore, crowd singing every last word, and ended the set in a fiery flash of musical godliness with their signature "2 hit" ending, which any true DT fan knows about. Then in classic Dream Theater fashion, the five take center stage and give their double bow, signaling the end to an unforgettable night.

    Dream Theater, 7/25/09

by Adam407 on 7/26/09Hard Rock Live Orlando - Orlando

I'm glad I didnt spend $70 just to see the headliner play for only 80 minutes. A very short set with eight songs. Thank goodness I only spent $35 on the stand room only ticket. The band performed great though.

One of the best shows I've seen.

by prototyperob on 7/26/09Hard Rock Live Orlando - Orlando

Place--- Hard Rock Cafe, Orlando: [4stars] I like HRC over House of Blues. The size was perfect and the concession stands/areas are conveniently located throughout. The balcony seating guards do however pester you for tickets constantly. The sound for the vocals throughout all the bands needed some fixing it seemed, it was difficult hearing vocals. Bands--- Scale the Summit: [4.2Stars] These guys were awesome. Instrumental progressive rock. they are a perfect opening band for this tour. Bigelf: [3.5Stars] These guys were ok. Their style of music was a little dark & psychedelic for my taste, but they put on a decent show for what they were. Zappa plays Zappa: [4.7Stars] This group was awesome. All of the musicians in this band were highly skilled and experienced with their instruments. Dream Theater: [5Stars] What's there to say about DT that hasn't already been said. They played an Epic Show and brought the house down.

I know when to leave the show tomorrrow

by ZappaFaninFlorida on 7/26/09Hard Rock Live Orlando - Orlando

I was certainly disappointed when I learned ZPZ would only play 75 minutes and not be the headliner. We arrived at the Hard Rock in time to hear Scale the Summit, a nice trio of young musicians playing songs with different titles, but musically indistinguishable from one song to the next, all in all, not bad and worth the listen. Next DarkElf took the stage and, a bit too much with the makeup and crappy equipment, musical talent questionable, it is definitely all about the singer/keyboard player. Not my cup of tea, but tolerable to listen to waiting for my band of choice, ZPZ. Finally ZPZ took the stage and did not disappoint, the band was tight and the set list was made up of memorably named songs I assume designed to help new fans remember what they heard so they might buy a record and get into Frank's music. There were plenty of Zappa fans in attendance, but many more Dream Theater fans waiting to hear the loud angry music they play. Scheila was great, the new singer Ben was full of energy and charisma. I was watching a few people in front of me while ZPZ played and they were definitely impressed and you could see them truly being turned on to the great Zappa music and ZPZ talent. Dweezil was on the mark as was Joe, Billy and Pete, not sure if Jamie was having an off night, there were a few awkward moments, but it could have been the sound system too. All the good that ZPZ did to reach a new audience would soon fade away as Dream Theater finally took the stage, suddenly there was no more sitting down to enjoy the show, everyone was on their feet listening to the loud (over 130dB) angry music, if this is "Prock" I want no part of it. The same people I saw so impressed with fine talent of ZPZ were quickly consumed with the main event and ZPZ would fade as a nice memory, if it was remembered at all. ZPZ has no place on the same bill with these bands, I don't know who was helping whom on the whole ticket sale thing, seems to me last time I saw ZPZ at this same venue there were no empty seats, there were plenty after the first few numbers from Dream Theater. Now that we have officially labeled water boarding as torture and banned the use, it could be easily and more effectively be replaced by listening to Dream Theater, it was indeed torture and a little disturbing IMO. I now know when to leave the show in Clearwater tonight. No time for autographs from ZPZ, although Scale the Summit managed to make time for a meet and greet after their performance. Had ZPZ announced the 75 minute set info and the fact they were doing a few ZPZ only shows across the country I would have spent my money and vacation days accordingly. The shirts were terribly over priced for the poor quality, the "We Don't Mess Around" shirt was another version of the original, missing the Zappa logo on the sleeve. The 120 mile drive to the venue was not a great trade off for the experience, but getting a jump start by leaving two songs into the angry Nightmare set did help a bit. This will be the last time we spend money on a multi band experience with ZPZ. I hope this is the last year of the experiment to reach new generations. In the prior years I have always witnessed generations of people represented at ZPZ shows, and we go to no less than 5 shows a year. ZPZ does not belong to the so called Progressive Rock genre, particularly if the bands tonight represent what "Prock" is today. The music of Zappa is in a class all its own, it is the music by which all other music is measured.

    Dream Theater+ZplaysZ=WIN

by MrAwesomeguy on 7/26/09Hard Rock Live Orlando - Orlando

Amazing show start to finish. Bigelf was not my favorite, but Scale the Summit did great. ZplaysZ was absolutely phenominal, amazing sound. Dream Theater definitely stole the show, and played a killer set list, which included lots of my favorites. Awesome night.

by johnpetruccisgod on 7/26/09Hard Rock Live Orlando - Orlando

The best show on the planet. Dream theater always deliver in their performances they are to me the most talented band alive now. They play flawlessly and always improvise on their shows and add new stuff to their songs.
