Sonata Arctica Great, Dragonforce... Not So Much
by RyuheiAoi on 9/21/09The Regency Ballroom - San FranciscoRating: 2 out of 5Sonata Arctica opened for Dragonforce, and it was much to the pleasure of everyone in the crowd. They played some of their best tracks - In Black and White, Paid in Full, Don't Say a Word, Flag in the Ground - as well as some of their other tracks. Everyone loved their performance. After they left, so did a large portion of the audience.
Dragonforce came out next, starting with 'Heroes of Our Time,' one of their better songs. They later went on to play songs including Operation Ground and Pound, and finished with Through the Fire and the Flames, all of which are available on the X-Box 360 Game, Guitar Hero III. Many would argue they only became popular because of that game.
Dragonforce has never been very good live, and the same held true for tonight. They don't play their music very well - No harmonization, and often sounding like they are singing something entirely different in person than what they sing on the CD. Bad vocals partnered with an overpowered bass, everything else was drowned out. The keyboarder was honestly the best-playing member of the band.
Crowd-pleasing is important to Dragonforce, likely due to playing such horrible live music. They were able to get a lot of cheers when they threw water on people, followed by tossing the bottles into the audience, as well as drinking beer on stage - the glass bottles being held in attached cup-holders.
