Pennsylvanian rockers Dr. Dog represent a blast from the past. Their music has often been compared to acts from long ago, including The Beatles and The Beach Boys, to name a couple. The retro sound of Dr. Dog has resulted in several memorable records in their nearly 15 years of existence, yet like any great band, sometimes their recorded material pales in comparison to their live act. Tickets to see Dr. Dog sell fast since the indie group usually prefers to tour the small club circuit. They have also played major festivals, like Coachella and Treasure Island, too. Dr. Dog skips the theatrics and simply sticks to good music playing live. They're a band that is highly skilled, and they even cut a live album at Google's headquarters in California. They have always jammed with famous psychedelic bands, like My Morning Jacket, in concert. Always a group to present new material, the band released their seventh studio album, called "B-Room," in 2013. The record features "The Truth" and "Broken Heart" and was the first album composed at their new studio in Philadelphia.
Dr. Dog was formed by childhood friends, Scott McMicken and Toby Leaman, as the duo preferred to experiment with lo-fi recordings, including original psychedelic material recorded on eight tracks and other vintage devices. Their first album, "The Psychedelic Swamp," was self-recorded and released in 2001. Dr. Dog became popular along the Philadelphia circuit, yet gained little notoriety outside of it. However, the group continued to write and compose the way they wanted to. This would later lead to a large cult following drawn to their complete DIY approach and indie-mentality, thanks to their tireless promotion on the Internet. "We All Belong," "Fate" and "Shame, Shame" are all classic Dr. Dog studio releases, though the band has also released its fair share of EPs and vinyl.
It was my second time seeing Dr. Dog but my first time in Portland. They didn't disappoint.
This show was awesome!!!! The opening act Sean Bones was very good and Dr. Dog blew it out of the water. They pretty much played every song I wanted to hear which was pretty easy when you play what seems to be a 25 song set list. They just moved from song to song and didn't mess around, very impressed!!!!!
Dr. Dog rocked it hard for well over an hour, with lots of energy the entire time. The sound system at the gothic was great, a perfect level of noise to take you away with the music, but not leave you deaf the next day. Could have done without all the smoke, but hey i guess it was 4/20.
I wasn't a big fan of Dr Dog, but the Growlers were great. I had not heard of either band but went with a few freinds. Imagine my surprise to hear the Growlers. I love their Beach Boy vibe and the laid back California style. I went home and downloaded some of their music.Dr Dog was a let down after the Growlers. So I give the show four stars just because I found a new band I love.
The show was very well worth the $15. Made for a very wonderful evening.
I've been dieing to go to a Dr. Dog show, finally saw them in Columbus at the Newport Music Hall. The venue was awesome, great place to see the dogs. They put on a great performance. A drunken stupid rugby match, probably best way to describe it.
Army of the Ancients washed over me like a cleansing force. Songs that build to a level that is euphoric are the norm in this show... and I was sober.
I have seen Dr. Dog at smaller venues before but this show was even better! Each time I see Dr. dog they surprise me and keep putting on a even better show :)
one of the best shows i've ever been to. they're extremely entertaining and passionate about their music and the sound is just perfect. the growlers were also fantastic.
I have been in love, yes in love, with Dr. Dog for about 2 years now; this was my first time seeing them live! They are AMAZING live!!!!! Their talent is unmatched by anyone in this industry!!!! I heart Taxi!!!! :)
I drove 3 hours to see Dr Dog in Columbus and was a little worried about how their live show would be. I downloaded a few of their more popular songs in the past year and decided to just gowith my wife. It was worth the drive there and back. Their show was full of energy and I heard some more songs that I would like to download and found a deeper appreciation for the band. The opening band the Growlers from California were good. I bought their album and listened to it on the way home. Though they made me laugh abit because they had a band member who wore a raccoon skin hat and sat and played a bongo type instrument and the tamberine and he would bob his head back and forth causing the tail of the hat to fly back and forth. It actually distracted me from the rest of the band as I watched him the whole time.
Dr. Dog opened with a band from California named The Growlers. Their first few songs were very catchy, until all the songs started to blend together in the way they sounded very similar. The lead vocalist said they would sing for 45 minutes, and I was wishing for it all to be over. Towards the end of their act, the lead guitarist started to do guitar tricks, and power slid on the front of the stage. He was clearly drunk, as between songs he would try to get the crowd to do the wave. Once Dr. Dog finally got on stage, the stage had been dusted with a light fog from a machine. They kicked off their part of the show with non stop good songs, as well as 2 new ones from their new album coming in April. Even after they finished, the crowd pleaded for more, and they came out to perform one more song before actually retiring again to the backstage.
I've seen these guys play in several different venues...the newport was like coming home. They sounded exceptional, looked great & played their hearts out!
