DOUG & THE SLUGS IN CONCERT:

Canadian power pop group Doug & The Slugs has been kicking out their doo-wop-inspired brand of new wave since the late '70s, and their live shows are as fun as ever more than three decades later. Former frontman Doug Bennett is no longer with the group, but new singer Ted Okos has done a fantastic job of filling his shoes, bringing an imitable energy to the group's upbeat tunes and feel-good live performances. Witty Top 40 hits like "Too Bad" and "Tomcat Prowl" are as infectious as they were in the '80s, and the band always gets fans singing along at their rollicking live shows. Ticket buyers looking for a nostalgic pop party won't want to miss Doug & The Slugs as they relive their salad days on tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Doug & The Slugs formed in Vancouver in 1977 under the leadership of singer-songwriter Doug Bennett. The band initially had a hard time booking gigs due to their name, so they took matters into their own hands, throwing themed parties at community halls that always guaranteed fans a good time. By the end of the '70s they were staples in the Vancouver music scene, and in 1980 they scored national attention when their single "Too Bad" became a Top 20 hit on the Canadian charts. Their debut album Cognac & Bologna arrived later that year, peaking at No. 23 in Canada and earning them several Juno nominations including single of the year for "Too Bad". The band remained a fixture on the Canadian charts for the remainder of the '80s, notching Top 40 hits like 1983's "Making It Work" and 1988's "Tomcat Prowl", but by the mid-'90s they had stopped performing. Doug got The Slugs back together in 2003 for several reunion shows, but in 2004 he passed away from liver cirrhosis. After another hiatus the band regrouped in 2009 with Ted Okos as their new frontman, and they've kept the good times rolling ever since with their live-wire performances on tour.

The band Chrome is a great cover band and a great opener for Doug and the Slugs. Thoroughly enjoyed the shows. The venue Century Casino is cost and we'll set up with tiered seating

  • I will see them every time they’re in the province

Despite their age, the band is very energetic. Teddy can sing just like Doug making the concert incredible. Simon is always a treat to see live. The music is fantastic. I’ve seen many a concerts before, some of which I’m content only seeing once, but Doug and the Slugs are a completely different story. The concert feels like it’s just for you, unlike the bigger, newer bands. If ever they’re close, you’d be missing out if you didn’t go and see them

  • Showmen one and all.

by Lolly on 3/5/20Commodore Ballroom - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

What a fun night out. Sharkskin really was a great warm up, excellent jazz tunes that we enjoyed listening to. And then out came Doug & the Slugs, yeppers, the audience was ready and shuffling to the front of the floor, as they do at the Commodore. The crowd was a happy bunch and knew all the words (me too), bonus haha. We danced, danced, danced. Loved the visuals. Absolutely loved that the happy concert goers spilled onto Granville St with super big smiles on their faces. Thank you.

  • Making It Work!

by Yellow Skye on 2/5/19Commodore Ballroom - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

This band really knows how to entertain! Every song was played to perfection. They played all of their hits and some from way back, they pulled hits from every album. I would go see Doug and the Slugs again and again!
