DJ Jazzy Jeff on Tour
A pioneer whose crate-digging and beat-making skills remain unparalleled, West Philadelphia's DJ Jazzy Jeff has been one of hip-hop's most celebrated DJs for more than three decades. When Jeffrey Allen Townes was only 10 years old, he embarked on his DJ career, spinning records in his family's basement. His appreciation of the job of a DJ ran so deep, he'd use his time at neighborhood block parties to study how others worked:
In 1985, Jeff paired up with fellow Philadelphian Will Smith to form DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, and together the two hit it big with crossover smashes in the 1980s and ‘90s. Earlier singles like "Parents Just Don't Understand" and "Nightmare on My Street" cruised to the top with their combination of slapstick humor and boom-bap beats, with the former song winning the inaugural Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance in 1989. The duo's 1991 jam "Summertime" took a more chilled-out approach, and it became a cookout staple and earned the pair their second Grammy.
DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince split up in the early ‘90s, although Townes has reunited with Smith for a handful of reunion shows and collaborations on record. He's also struck out on his own as an in-demand DJ and music mogul, helping nurture his hometown's fertile neo-soul scene and collaborating with fellow hip-hop titans like Big Daddy Kane and Method Man.
Jeff has also taken fans along with him on the road in the online video series Vinyl Destination, which follows him on his travels as he seeks out the best examples of culture around the world. His shrewd study of what makes an entertainer successful has paid off in a slew of ways — for him and for anyone attending his shows.
Had fun. Very excited about the hip hop music that I used to have house party with. Everyone performance was on point.
The show was very nice, and it started on time and went smoothly no interruptions. The only issue people continue to come into the floor area where the better sights are. It’s very disruptive to the persons who do pay better money for their seats. People need to sit in the seat you paid for and stop coming into the area and then challenging the security officers.
The show was absolutely crazy and I loved every minute of it!
Phenomenal show. Very nostalgic it definitely was a party!
The concept was dope! 50 acts all performing their biggest hit or song of choice. No breaks, just on to the next. Musically, it took me through my childhood in 3 hours or so. 🔥
Everything i expected and more. BEST concert ever!
I think the show was very good but i was disappointed that thete wasn't a platform for Dj jazzy jeff to mix and excite the crowd as one of the best Dj to date.
This concert was definitely one for the Hip Hop history books.
Great show nice acts really put icing on cake for my bday celebration
The 50 Years of Hip Hop Mix Tape Live was the ABSOLUTE BEST Concert ever! Thank you for the experience!
This was the best show I have ever seen. It just got better and better! I am so proud and honored to be a part of such an iconic event. I lived my entire teenage and young adulthood in one night.
Simply AMAZING, WONDERFUL, FANTASTIC ...5 Stars Hope it becomes an annual event.
One of the best shows I’ve seen Loved seeing all the hip hop royalty in one place. Jazzy Jeff is the truth
So much history and greatness on once stage in one night. I took my mother and step-father. We're die hard hip-hop lovers. Had a great time!
Show started on time with Jazzy Jeff doing as he does, gets busy!!! Start time 8 pm and he was on when we got in a little after 8, nice!! Rakim’s son performed and sounded like he has skills. Rakim hit the stage- went through his masterpieces and finished at around 10:30. For the price, I didn’t feel like I was cheated and the time show ended was great for a hip hop head who didn’t need to be out all night.
My wife surprised me and purchased tickets on the first day so I was already was on cloud nine when I entered the facility (Buckhead Theater). DJ Jazzy Jeff and Rakim are legends. They truly represented the culture and all of the Hip Hop fans in the building were rocking to classic songs. It was a night for the record books. Without a doubt!
I've been to many concerts but to witness "The GOAT" jazzy Jeff give us a Hip Hop Anthology (Wow !!!) he played songs I never knew were sanples and of course he showed why he's the best on the turntables. Now the God MC Rakim Allah, what can I say he did all his jewels and the crowd knew every word(myself included). It was an honor to see these legends up close... This is a show I will tell my great grands about.
I was in town visiting from Dallas and we had a ball!!
DJ Jazzy Jeff tried to teach the crowd about the history of hip hop with his beats but the crowd wasn't feeling him. The God Rakim was on point as usual,he called on the NYC fans as the ATL people were too laid back.
This show was amazing. DJ Jazzy Jeff started on time. Ramon came out did his thing and ended on time. Venue was wonderful. Wasn’t crowded. COVID restrictions were in place. They even had rapid test onsite. Wonderful concert experience!!!
