Loved the concert and musicians who played. It did feel like the orchestra wasn’t as rehearsed as they could have been, but the music overall was good.
My main issues were a few things. Coming from Raleigh/Durham and DPAC things felt much more hectic at Ovens Auditorium.
Parking was rough. We parked probably half a mile away and walked across the entire area past the colosseum at night in Winter. I’m used to a parking deck being right next to the venue so that might just be my expectations.
The audience also was extremely talkative during the performances. I get that Distant Worlds isn’t a normal classical concert, but it was distracting with how talkative the people were during the music performances. It actively affected my listening experience. Again because this is an orchestral concert things aren’t THAT loud. So talking behind you is very audible. I’d love to see signage or something about being quiet during the performance. Again this isn’t a rock concert, we can all hear each other.
I do appreciate how quick staff were to get on people who were recording the concert. I have no idea why they want to do that anyways but I’m glad to see staff took care of them quickly.
I also think the audio mix could have been better. The brass was loud and harsh, while it sounded like the winds were quite boosted. Granted I don’t know their situation but this was my experience sitting about halfway from the wall and stage and on the bottom floor.
Overall my experience was meh at best. I saw this same concert in Durham and had a MUCH better experience at DPAC. Walkable food, close parking, and a better attended venue make a huge difference to the entire experience. I also appreciated how they handled long queue lines with signage and helped people find things they needed in the lobby. I will likely avoid Ovens in the future just because all of these little things adding up and making the whole experience worse.
Distant Worlds please come back to Durham and DPAC!
