What a wonderful concert, I’ve been a fan of the Final Fantasy franchise since the early 90s so this was a real treat. I’ve heard the music endless amounts of time on online and on CD, but nothing compares to hearing it live. I love the way they have the movie screen behind it so you can watch the gameplay and cutscenes, really immersive! The conductor, Arnie Roth, what a great guy, you can tell he loves the franchise and has wonderful interaction with the fans. The Orpheum in Minneapolis was a great theater as well. My buddy and I had floor seats, and had no problem hearing the music. It’s a cozy theater so I don’t think there’s really a bad seat. Oh, and the real treat, Amanda Achen was there, the vocalist who originally sang My Star and Flow! She was amazing! This, do not miss this concert, especially if you’re a fan of the series. Even if you haven’t played all the games, even if you just played a couple of them, you won’t go away disappointed because the Final Fantasy feeling will take you back!
It was my first time ever seeing an orchestra and it was absolutely amazing! I got these tickets mainly for my husband. He has all things final fantasy related. I came because I love Sephiroth 🖤
This performance was spectacular! Purchased these tickets as a gift for my husband. We loved every moment! Only downside was that the concert exclusive keychain was sold out at least 30 mins prior to the performance start possibly even earlier. Given we could only start entering the theater 60 mins prior to performance it felt that it wouldn't have been attainable to get anyways. Would have been nice to have an IOU, QR or ship to you option given we were present for the concert and would have enjoyed having the exclusive that is only available if you attend.
My husband and I rarely get a date night because we have a medically complex child, we were excited to have a night out finally. When I purchased the tickets I looked at the view from our seats and it seemed like they would be perfect on the end. After spending over $400.00 we finally arrived to be very disappointed by our view. The orchestra actually completely blocked the view of the screen. I feel as though that should’ve been disclosed. Honestly it was just really disappointing..
Everything was mic-ed so it sounded like a recording being sent out of the speakers. It was all played fine, but an orchestra is better when it's live and not simply broadcast from speakers. I love the final fantasy music, but I have a better stereo system at home then the auditorium amplification was, so the sound was a let down. AWR makes CDs of this music, they know how to record it well - so why not do a better job amplifying what needs to be and not everything. The atmosphere was great, it's fun to talk to other FF music fans! Distant Worlds will be better I'm sure when it's played in a proper venue designed for orchestral music.
Getting to seats, getting in and out, bathrooms were all great. No real waiting for anything. Bathrooms were efficient af with the attendants helping out Concessions were lacking. It was just chips, candy, and pre-packaged packaged popcorn with way too many canned cocktails, a couple beers, and generic fountain drinks. I don't expect gorumet meals or anything but it would be nice to have some food and drinks that's aren't gonna give me indigestion during the performance This concert was one of the best and worst I've gone to in the series over the past 15+ years. I feel like I got whiplash from going from one extreme to the other where I'm literally sobbing from Amanda Achen's vocal performance to cringing hard from the orchestra tearing. The orchestra tore in 3 different songs at least (I think one song twice) and one of them was so bad the strings on the left side looked like deer in headlights cuz they didn't know what was going on. Percussion was way off and it caused a lot of issues in those songs. It was kinda sad cuz the first instance was during one of my favorite songs "those who fight further". You could tell which songs had been practiced by the orchestra and which hadn't. The songs that had been practiced had very obvious confidence, energy, and drive behind them and the other songs sounded quiet and meek despite being incredibly moving pieces in the games. Swing de Chocobo is something that should have been practiced HEAVILY. An orchestra was asked to play swing jazz music and it just didn't hit. It didn't have that velvet just barely laziness with the note accents, and honestly sounded like the song had a stick in its rear with how rigid it was being played. Swing de Chocobo should be removed imo unless you're bringing a jazz percussionist in. Every time I've heard an ensemble that doesn't play jazz, try to play jazz, it's just a mess. I've never been a huge fan of the songs Amanda sings in the game, but seeing her live was a whole different experience. I don't think I've been moved to tears like that at a concert before. It was simply gorgeous and words completely fail me here so I'm not gonna attempt to explain 😂 Because of the tearing throughout the concert, I anticipated One Winged Angel to be another tearing fiasco but was presently surprised that it was the first time I'd ever heard it NOT tear at a Distant Worlds concert. So thank you for absolutely nailing that one 💖 The choir was the best I've heard in the Distant World tour series. So huge round of applause from me there. They were confident, clear, on time, and they just resonated. Ugh. Beautiful. Every other time I've seen a choir do One Winged Angel, they tear from the orchestra really bad but everything stayed together and it made the song so much cooler to see performed live 🤩 Brass & Woodwinds: Fantastic. French Horns sometimes overpower sections or you'll be able to pick out a trumpet where you shouldn't be able to, but that wasn't the case with this group. Woodwinds stood out when they were supposed to stand out and again. . . One Winged Angel. I know those note runs aren't easy so MAJOR kudos for having those early runs pristiiiiine👌 My eyes were doin this 👀 like GURL👏GET👏IT I think the roster for the evening was fantastic, it just needs some polishing. I know this review is pretty brutal and I apologize for the bluntness. I grabbed expensive seats though and was hoping for a little more consistency throughout the program. I'd really love to see this series in Sacramento again, but this orchestra needs some work with these songs if this tour comes back through. There's no excuse to not know these songs. At all. This tour has been around for a long time and they have recordings of the orchestral versions all over YouTube. If you can't find a recording, you can still go listen to the song from the game to at least get a little bit better of a feel for the song you're being paid to play. I'm hoping this feedback will highlight areas of improvement for this group so they have the best performance in this concert series on the next go round 😊
This was such an unforgettable experience. I would definitely go again.
The title says it all. Imagine a big screen showing final fantasy footage with a live orchestra with singers...it brings a new meaning to a live concert. Even if you aren't into Final Fantasy, if you like game soundtrack music this is probably going the be your jam.
This was my first time going to SAFE and the venue layout was perfect. Distant Worlds also played the music at appropriate sound levels and never crossed past concerning dBs. Bathrooms were clean as well. Would definitely come back for more Orchestras!
