About

The setting is 1874 Vienna.  Things have been set in motion before the curtain rises on Die Fledermaus, that most effervescent of operettas.  The recipient of a practical joke while in a drunken haze after a college party, it has taken young Dr. Falke three years to figure out how to get back at his friend Eisenstein for the prank.  The perfect forum is provided by the outlandish Russian Prince Orlofsky, who rolls into town and invites Falke to a sumptuous party on New Year’s Eve.  The guests arrive under an assortment of false pretenses, culminating in the unwitting Eisenstein flirting shamelessly with his own wife in disguise as a Hungarian countess.  Amidst much waltzing and champagne consumption, he gets a taste of his own medicine, delivered in large doses by Dr. Falke.

    reasonable spectacle

by Bochemian on 11/17/14Keller Auditorium - Portland

Considering that this is not La Scala or Metropolitan event was reasonable. 3/4 OK decor, costumes, choreography. Vocal performance: like: Rosalinde,Adele disaster: Prince Orlofsky /nice accent by the way/ good chorus overall. Darcelle part- no objections

    Unfortunate

by LittleHazel on 11/16/14Keller Auditorium - Portland

I give this performance a 1-star rating based solely on the extremely poor decision-making of the creative team. The sets were beautiful and the singing was perfect. But a tranny show at the end of Act II was an abomination to this opera. A Patti LaBelle song and comedic schtick had no place in the show. This was added as part of the Portland Opera's 50th anniversary celebration. It was distracting and distasteful. I'm sure there are more appropriate ways to celebrate a milestone. Not to mention my frustration for the hundreds of dollars spent on tickets to an utter disappointment. I feel bad for the performers of the opera who actually did the show justice. They were brought down by this ridiculous addition.

    Die Fledermaus

by Darvel on 11/12/14Keller Auditorium - Portland

My first Portland Opera in over 20 years, Die Fledermaus was simply fantastic, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Everything was superb--the sets, costumes, singing, acting, the orchestra, program guide, and venue. The only portion I felt was not necessary and out of place (breaking up the continuity of the main event) were the cameo appearances of Michael Allen Harrison and Tony Starlight, although their performances were very good.

    Grand Opera

by Kislany on 11/12/14Keller Auditorium - Portland

From the beginning till the end, this was the best I have seen so far at the Portland Opera. Traditional, magnificent. Our seats were great and this time I did not have a tall person sitting in front of me. The music was fantastic and even better than I remembered. The singers were so great that I wondered how they managed to sing for such a long time. plain words: just FANTASTIC

    Excellent performance

by MrsEAK on 11/12/14Keller Auditorium - Portland

This opera was very, very fun. Many very laughable moments, and the singers were amazing. Very well done. The only thing I did not enjoy was the special event for the 50th anniversary in the middle of act 2 which I found very disrupting. But the opera itself was great.

by lonewolf5 on 11/5/13CSUN - Cal State Northridge - Northridge

Rachel Staples Guettler performed in the role of Rosalinda with star quality. Her voice broadcasted easily and with great strength, power and vitality. She can not only sing, but act with naturalness.

by silverski on 10/29/13CSUN - Cal State Northridge - Northridge

A thoroughly professional production with great live orchestra. It could be staged in any operatic playhouse. It was set in the flapper era and was a delightful Johann Straus comedic operetta.

    Die Fledermaus was superb!

by PleinAir on 2/27/12Pepperdine University - Malibu

The student productions at Pepperdine are as good as some professional opera companies. Die Fledermaus was superb. I can't believe all the opera lovers in LA aren't beating the doors down for these events. On top of it all they are one-tenth the price of tickets elsewhere. I will be coming down from Santa Barbara and telling all my friends in the future.

The members of the Flora Thornton Opera Program at Pepperdine University outdid themselves with a soaring, lush and completely sense-appealing production of Die Fledermaus! The production was so fantastic I came back to see the Saturday performance!

    Pepperdine Opera Students were Spectacular!

    by Love2Teachtots on 2/26/12Pepperdine University - Malibu

This opera was spectacular. If you missed it you surely missed a most entertaining night. I was mesmerized for three hours (with two intermissions). Didn't want it to end. It was humorous, eye catching, musical, and all encompassing. The orchestra was an added bonus, right on and not overwhelming.

Thursday night's Adele is ready for the MET!

by avantgartist on 2/25/12Pepperdine University - Malibu

She's a standout. Her acting, superbly nuanced voice, and command of character was so professional. She sparkled throughout! WOW! The Smothers Theater is an intimate venue...wonderful acoustics! The orchestra was vibrant, great chorus...brought this chestnut to life. Still humming Johann Strauss Jr.'s greatest hits. Loved it! Thanks Pepperdine Music Students and performing arts department for sharing this production with the public!

Great opera! My husband and I loved it. The music was amazing, the singing good. One thing that could definitely be improved upon is the acting. But, all in all, it made for a very enjoyable evening!

by CarmelBill on 11/15/10Indiana University Musical Arts Center - Bloomington

What a great performance. I have a degree in music and I can say that the performance and sets were at the highest level and very entertaining. This is the best opera performed by top rate singers and pit orchestra musicians. The sets were excellent as well.

    Die Fledermaus

by precherkid on 11/15/10Indiana University Musical Arts Center - Bloomington

Thoroughly enjoyed the performance. Jacobs School of Music does a very professional effort in staging their performances such as opera. This is the second one we have attended, and we enjoyed both of them. Our only criticism is that perhaps due to the young voices, at times, especially in the singers' lower registers their efforts were unavailable to us in the front row of the second balcony over the pit orchestra. The above a very slight issue and would not ever keep us from attending the next performance or heartily recommending I.U. Opera to anyone--you will enjoy yourself. Note: we drove from Michigan to attend (and visit our daughter at I.U.) but the performance really put the icing on the cake. Recommend them to anyone and everyone.

by Redhat on 7/18/09Mendelssohn Theatre - Ann Arbor

The music was delightful!! The voices were superb!! Every one of them!!! t was a wonderful story and I can't think in one way it could have been improved upon; I didn't want it to end. The whole event was just right for me. Everyone did a super job in making the words very clear.
