About

South African rave rap group Die Antwoord catapulted to overnight success when their edgy music video for 2010 single “Enter The Ninja” went viral. The video was perfect for viral success, looking like an punk art project, but it also had high-quality production, deft rapping and a highly danceable backing track. It's a mix that earned the band a growing cult following and propelled it to a pair of internationally acclaimed albums and concerts with sold out tickets around the world. On the 2013 European tour, the scene was somewhere between a hip-hop show, a rave and a gonzo comedy routine full of frenetic energy, intense dance music and lots of thrusting. On stage, Die Antwoord blasted through an hour and a half of music, including its latest, “Cookie Thumper!” The shows are a visual treat too, with the tattooed co-lead singer Ninja half-naked and wearing a mask fit for a horror movie villain and the other lead Yo-landi Vi$$er sporting bright pink hot pants and pitch-black contact lenses.

As the frontman for MaxNormal.TV and The Constructus Corporation, Ninja has been a member of the South African hip-hop scene for years, but he’s said that all of that was just preparation for the madness that is Die Antwoord. After the international viral success of “Enter The Ninja,” Die Antwoord decided to strike out on its own, independently releasing its 2011 sophomore album, "Ten$Ion," which debuted at No. 20 on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Chart and spawned the popular single “Fatty Boom Boom.” In 2013, they followed that up with “Cookie Thumper!," the first single off a third album called "Donker Mag." Die Antwoord's unique style and dynamic energy will continue to please new and old fans alike.

    Die Antwoord = EPIC!

by Stefany on 10/20/10The Music Box - Hollywood

I love this venue. It was a little rainy to go on the rooftop deck, but that's ok. I’ve done the general admission stage level floor before, but we sat in the balcony this time because my friend doesn’t like to be jostled around in the crowd. I didn’t realize that there were sofa/booths at the front of the balcony all the way across that you can reserve. I will have to find out the deal on that, as since those seats are the only reserved seats in the balcony, you would be freer to wander around before the show & between bands. The guy next to me said that you have in & out privileges to go to the restaurant next door, as there is no food in the Music Box itself. Since we got there early enough (7:30 to wait in line for the doors to open at 8pm), we were able to snag front row (behind the reserved row) … we just couldn’t leave to walk to the bar, merch booth, restaurant, etc together. Die Antwoord were fantastic! The view is great from the balcony, and they put on an engaging performance. The opening band was good, although very unusual…I thought they were a good fit for Die Antwoord. The sound was great & Die Antwoord did most songs from the new CD, SOS. They had a great assortment of merchandise in the lobby, and if you bought a copy of the CD they signed it after the show. Reps from Interscope were outside before the doors opened handing out stickers & taking pictures of people in line holding up their stickers. I’d like to see what they are doing with the pictures (I like seeing pictures of myself & my friends having fun!) BONUS: Satino Rice, of Project Runway Season 2, was in attendance and after the show I met him & got my picture taken with him. A great end to a great night!

    Greatest energy!

by ShyMatthews on 10/19/10The Music Box - Hollywood

I always think hip hop shows are hard to enjoy live since the artist can really only pace and rap during the show but with Die Antwoord their energy is mind blowing! They def couldn't each go solo though, they made the show great together. And what you see in videos and interviews is really what you get! No merchandise yet though.

    Mixed show

by thisischris on 10/19/10The Music Box - Hollywood

The opening band was awful. How people can justify paying money to see talentless garbage like that boggle my mind. Luckily, Die Antwoord made up for it. Although their set was very short, it was pretty good overall.

Curiosity got the best of me

by MrAlex on 10/19/10The Music Box - Hollywood

Nobody seems to know whether this Die Antwoord thing is for real or not, and i really don't care one way or another. I got some major laughs out of the album so naturally i wanted to see if it holds up live. I always say that if you have to convince yourself that you like something, then you don't like it - but this show wasn't that simple. There were parts that really made me laugh and made me happy to have went. Overall, it wasn't a terribly exciting experience though. I thought most of their set fell on its face, but the moments of pure hilarity were a good counterbalance. Ultimately the show is a DJ and then Yo landi and ninja standing there rapping. If they incorporate a live band it think this show would be amazing. Without it though, it feels a little less virulent then it does on the record. If you have a shred of curiosity, go see it.

Go and see Die Antwwoord live. It's a once in a lifetime show and a lot of fun... Spotted many musicians at the show, including Mr Dave Grohl. He was starstruck.

Truly something that has to be experienced. I can't really put it into words how amazingly perfect they were to see live. Better than I expected and pure genius.
