About

South African rave rap group Die Antwoord catapulted to overnight success when their edgy music video for 2010 single “Enter The Ninja” went viral. The video was perfect for viral success, looking like an punk art project, but it also had high-quality production, deft rapping and a highly danceable backing track. It's a mix that earned the band a growing cult following and propelled it to a pair of internationally acclaimed albums and concerts with sold out tickets around the world. On the 2013 European tour, the scene was somewhere between a hip-hop show, a rave and a gonzo comedy routine full of frenetic energy, intense dance music and lots of thrusting. On stage, Die Antwoord blasted through an hour and a half of music, including its latest, “Cookie Thumper!” The shows are a visual treat too, with the tattooed co-lead singer Ninja half-naked and wearing a mask fit for a horror movie villain and the other lead Yo-landi Vi$$er sporting bright pink hot pants and pitch-black contact lenses.

As the frontman for MaxNormal.TV and The Constructus Corporation, Ninja has been a member of the South African hip-hop scene for years, but he’s said that all of that was just preparation for the madness that is Die Antwoord. After the international viral success of “Enter The Ninja,” Die Antwoord decided to strike out on its own, independently releasing its 2011 sophomore album, "Ten$Ion," which debuted at No. 20 on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Chart and spawned the popular single “Fatty Boom Boom.” In 2013, they followed that up with “Cookie Thumper!," the first single off a third album called "Donker Mag." Die Antwoord's unique style and dynamic energy will continue to please new and old fans alike.

Thermonuclear ZEF bomb in downtown L.A.

by ursus13 on 2/26/12Club Nokia - Los Angeles

Die Antwoord is South Africa's answer to the stale, if not dead, modern (corporate) rap scene. They gave a truly epic performance with their show at Club Nokia. The perfect size venue to see them live. High energy, dope rave beats from DJ Hi-Tek, Yolandi is as unique, sexy, and fun as they come, and Ninja has a talent and flow to rival anyone and everyone that's every spit rhymes on stage. Downtown L.A. and especially the U.S. rap scene will never be the same. Die Antwoord IS the answer.

Die Antwoord rocked the mic hard on Friday for about an hour. Great show, super loud, great energy, but I would have loved a few more tracks. Let's hope they can work up to a longer show next time.

by shadowplaybyam on 2/26/12Club Nokia - Los Angeles

Die Antwoord was incredible live. So much fun! The show was what I expected from them and I would definitely go see them again. A bit disappointed that they didn't perform Evil Boy or Fish Paste though; I would have enjoyed a bit longer of a set.

Be yourself do what u want and rise above. Its hard to imagine that only 2 people can rock the stage so hard! Also, die antwoord it even better live. They are on point with their entire show: great concept, great beats, great flows and hooks, awesome energy, and great positive message. They will leave you wanting more. I have more respect for this group after seeing them live.

    Die Antwoord Kills it.

by 2Wycked on 2/12/12Paradise Rock Club - Boston

Die Antwoord at the Paradise. I've never seen this place so full. The people watching alone was worth the admission. Die Antwoord performed a great set. All the stuff I wanted to hear with a few surprises as they peeled off more and more clothes as the night went on. Turbocharged Gangsta!

Die Antwooord - Fun, Energetic and Happy

by LeNkemise on 2/12/12Paradise Rock Club - Boston

Well, the Die Antwoord show wildly exceeded my expectations. It was really that good. If they're coming to your town, go. It's a total cerebral experience from beginning to end. Starting with chanting monks and an image of the late Leon Botha, a prominent Cape Town artist who was one of the world's oldest and most well known survivors of Progeria, to the final song where all three took an extended bow over the Afrikaans chants of Never Le Nkemise. DJ Hi-Tek, Yo-Landi and the Ninja held nothing back from one of the loudest crowds I have ever heard at the Paradise in Boston. The set list was a well constructed delivery of new (Ten$ion) and old ($0$) songs. The sound was phenomenal, from the bass rattling bottles off of ledges to the crystal clear lyrical flow. It was a high-energy and incredibly engaging experience that left you feeling satisfied with the biggest smile on your face. It's no wonder their entire 2012 tour of the US/Canada is completely sold out. Quite simply, it was the ideal mix of music, performance art, crowd participation and unity. More bands need to take a page out of the Die Antwoord experience.

    Die Antwoord

by Danknana on 10/31/10Royale Boston - Boston

This show was one of the best I have seen in a while. So much energy!!! I had only heard a little Die Antwoord before I went... and was a little hesitant on spending the 30 bucks to go see them. I am really glad that I did it was almost like the 30 I have ever spent. I waited at the front of the stage for three hours... they took forever to come on. The venue opened at seven they went on at ten. Their opening act Rie Rie or Rye Rye was absolutely awful but seeing them was worth being traumatized by her.
