DEVO on Tour

Often misunderstood, but nevertheless iconic, new-wave synth band DEVO is back for their 2022 tour, marking their first tour across the United States in eight years. Known best for the smash hit "Whip It" (1980), the Akron, Ohio, band is slated to hit four cities across the country. The band has released 11 studio albums, with their debut, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are DEVO! coming from Warner Bros label in 1978. They would go on to release five albums in the next five years; however, none were able to capture a mainstream audience like their debut. "Whip It" reached as high as No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the accompanying music video was received as a culture shock to the system, sending waves through the MTV generation, which elevated the band's fame. DEVO is heralded by their fans for concert performances that deliver high energy, alluring visual effects and innovative music from decades ago that still feels fresh.

DEVO in Concert

Musicians Gerald Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh were friends at Kent State University in the 1970s. The art majors, and another acquaintance, Bob Lewis, who was band-member-turned-manager became friends through a similar dark social humor that was often unconventional and offbeat. They agreed on a philosophy that society had actually been undergoing a "de-evolution" that rejected individuality or quirkiness. Thus, the robo-rhythmic group DEVO was born in the late 1970s, and with it a genre of new wave techno-pop. The group had their breakthrough with the film score for the local short, The Truth About De-Evolution, winning First Prize at the 1976 Ann Arbor Film Festival. In attendance at the festival were David Bowie and Iggy Pop, who helped DEVO secure a label contract with Warner Bros. Although their debut album caught on as an underground success, the group was also met with pushback. Some saw the band's non-conformist style as threatening. Rolling Stone magazine even labeled the group as fascists in an initial review of the album. Despite this, their third album, Freedom of Choice, and its premier single "Whip It" catapulted the group into the forefront of pop music as it was one of the most successful singles of 1980.

I thought they were kinda sloppy on a lot of the songs. Maybe 5 songs total were played with precision and energy. Also the crowd was geriatric and had no energy to give back to the band. There was no pogo pit. Barely anyone danced at all. Woulda loved to see them in like 1981

  • monotonous and oversold

It was monotonous and NOT their best show. A better song list would have helped.

Everyone (with taste and intelligence) owes it to themselves to experience Devo live at least once in their lives,

  • DEVO scratched the itch

by Eighties on 5/8/25The Anthem - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Somehow I missed DEVO in concert during the 80’s. This used to be a big regret but no longer. What’s remaining of this influential and sometimes silly quintet still put on a frenetic show full of auditory and visual spectacle. I took my 23 yo who turned to me at the end and asked “What was that?” Exactly.

  • They rocked!

by Alfonso on 5/8/25Rating: 5 out of 5

Ive seen Devo a handful of times but this is the first time in a few years. I forgot how hard these guys rocked. For having been playing together for over 50 years, they don't seem like they have lost a step. If you are a fan you should check them out live before they decide its time to stop touring. It was a blast!

First time seeing Devo and our group got in line early to get near the front. It felt intimate for such a large venue. Devo brought the energy in a fast paced entertaining set, that was over in no time. So much fun.

Great show! One of the best New Wave shows. Recently been going to a lot of these older New Wave band shows. Some have been a flop and my expectations were low. Glad to say I was blown away.

  • High Energy Fun

by Mustang289 on 5/4/25The Met Presented by Highmark - PhiladelphiaRating: 4 out of 5

A fun show you should go see if you get the chance. Very nostalgic for those of us of a certain age, everyone remembers the first time they saw Devo. They played all their classics, ending with “Beautiful World”. My only criticism would be Mark Mothersbaugh coming out as “Booji Boy” and singing most of the final song in this ridiculous child’s voice. Since this is my favorite song from them, it took something away for me by using this silly voice for this character. Other than that, they could have played just a little longer but there was no warm up and no “cheer for an encore” nonsense, so it kind of balanced out! Their last song was their last song. Instrumental and voice mixes were very good, such a welcome occurrence to be able to hear the vocals and instruments clearly.

  • Fantastic live audio visual performance

Took my pregnant daughter and her husband to the Philly show. We all were amazed. Thank you, Spud Boys!

  • Incredible experience

by John K on 5/4/25The Met Presented by Highmark - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

Been a fan of Devo since the 80s and finally saw them in concert at the Met. They were amazing, incredible show, especially since they have been doing this for five decades! As far as the Met in Philly goes, I’ve been to multiple concerts there and always enjoyed them. This concert I attended on crutches due to knee surgery. I cannot compliment the staff there enough. Every one that saw me went out of their way to ask if there was anything they could do to help. A truly wonderful group of people were there that evening which made the overall experience a 5 star plus evening!!

  • DEVO NEVER DISAPPOINTS

by SPUDBOY on 5/4/25The Met Presented by Highmark - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

DEVO is awesome been a spudboy ever since the first time I heard them. Mark is still so into this project. Jerry is high energy (THESE DUDES ARE IN THEIR 70'S) Graffics on screen were phenomenal as always. Only let down is it is their 50 yr anniversary tour - no mention of this by any band member that surprised me a bit.
