DEVO on Tour

Often misunderstood, but nevertheless iconic, new-wave synth band DEVO is back for their 2022 tour, marking their first tour across the United States in eight years. Known best for the smash hit "Whip It" (1980), the Akron, Ohio, band is slated to hit four cities across the country. The band has released 11 studio albums, with their debut, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are DEVO! coming from Warner Bros label in 1978. They would go on to release five albums in the next five years; however, none were able to capture a mainstream audience like their debut. "Whip It" reached as high as No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the accompanying music video was received as a culture shock to the system, sending waves through the MTV generation, which elevated the band's fame. DEVO is heralded by their fans for concert performances that deliver high energy, alluring visual effects and innovative music from decades ago that still feels fresh.

DEVO in Concert

Musicians Gerald Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh were friends at Kent State University in the 1970s. The art majors, and another acquaintance, Bob Lewis, who was band-member-turned-manager became friends through a similar dark social humor that was often unconventional and offbeat. They agreed on a philosophy that society had actually been undergoing a "de-evolution" that rejected individuality or quirkiness. Thus, the robo-rhythmic group DEVO was born in the late 1970s, and with it a genre of new wave techno-pop. The group had their breakthrough with the film score for the local short, The Truth About De-Evolution, winning First Prize at the 1976 Ann Arbor Film Festival. In attendance at the festival were David Bowie and Iggy Pop, who helped DEVO secure a label contract with Warner Bros. Although their debut album caught on as an underground success, the group was also met with pushback. Some saw the band's non-conformist style as threatening. Rolling Stone magazine even labeled the group as fascists in an initial review of the album. Despite this, their third album, Freedom of Choice, and its premier single "Whip It" catapulted the group into the forefront of pop music as it was one of the most successful singles of 1980.

    Mediocre Venue

by Stone on 11/19/23YouTube Theater - Inglewood

Lets start with pulling in to the venue... $50 FOR PARKING?!?!?! Absolutely no reason... and we hear it's worse for football and concerts. The ridiculous maze from the spot you pay and the point you park took 10 min... Then we ended up in a 2nd pay line. Poorly managed, on purpose. Food is basically only food trucks. Which is fine but $12 for one slide of pizza?? THERE IS NO FOOD INSIDE. Only chips. Beer is $15 to $20 per. The sound and the seats are perfect. The few staff I spoke to were great too. Mostly... it's the food and parking... not the staff... it's how it's managed. Cut overhead, save the consumer, get better planning and management.

    Always Awesome Devo

by magnabruin on 11/19/23YouTube Theater - Inglewood

Great energy and awesome hit titles played. Awesome backdrop visual elements, too complex to call them videos. Gave context and expanded the concert experience. See them if you can.

    We Are Devo!

by Natalie on 11/19/23YouTube Theater - Inglewood

Devo is still rocking it after 50 years! Saw fans of all ages coming together for this show and having the best time! Everyone put on a wonderful show and the meet and greet prior only made the experience better. I would seriously recommend this band to any and everyone - regardless of how well they know the songs.

    DEVO sounded great

by Spudboy on 11/19/23YouTube Theater - Inglewood

It was pretty much the same stuff they've been doing for decades, but as usual their playing was tight and powerful. The Boogie Boy (Boojie Boy) appearance was a bit tiresome - Mark Mothersbaugh's falsetto voice was hard to understand with the somewhat distorted sound system. When he introduced the singer from the group Berlin, people were asking "Who? What did he say?" The new guy who took the place of the late Bob Casale (Bob 2) did a great job - it was like he has always been with the band. Mark Mothersbaugh had a little trouble singing the high notes, but overall the band sounded to be in peak form.

Still Great After All These Years

by We Are Devo on 11/19/23YouTube Theater - Inglewood

This was my first time seeing Devo live. I've been a fan since high school and I'm glad a went. Even with the expenses of a ticket and a flight from Tulsa to LA and an overnight in a hotel the show was wort every penny. It exceeded my expectations. Devo was 100% on stage. I wish they would have played some songs from Something for Everybody but they played a great set. Met some really interesting people at the show as well.

    Long long night

    by D-evolution on 11/19/23YouTube Theater - Inglewood

My wife and I stepped away from our seats to use the restrooms and to look for food. Since we are both handicapped we had to use the elevators. Upon realizing that there wasn't any other food aside from the food trucks outside, we proceeded back to our seats. We had an issue with the elevator. They have a number indicating the floor that is located just inside the doors upon opening just like any other elevator does only to realize that the number doesn't correspond with the floor. We had to go up and down off and on several times. I had to ask a staff member about the numbers and I was told that 2 means section 1 and that 3 means section 2 etc.. which is where our seats were. By the time we made it back to our seats, 15 minutes had lapsed. Upon getting to our seats we realized there were two people sitting in our seats. We contacted an usher which approached the two individuals and asked them to please leave the seats as they didn't belong to them. They refused and this also caused us to miss yet another portion of the show. The overall time we lost due to these unforeseen problems was over 30 minutes and caused a big inconvenience so we are asking for a full refund. Thank you.

    WE ARE DEVO still!!!

by Marc on 11/19/23YouTube Theater - Inglewood

While I saw panning comments about the show on Social Media, I was again transported to a 15 year old me in 1980 seeing DEVO doing a set at The Village Mews clothing store after closing in Westwood. DEVO amazes me still…If this show wad truly, there was no whimpers…Only BANGERS!!!

    Are We Not Men.

by The Pope on 11/19/23YouTube Theater - Inglewood

Great venue, STAFF, crowd, sound mix, and visuals. The band was freaking amazing. Lots of costume changes. Super high energy start to finish. Every song was a banger. Despite my off center view I could still see everyone on stage without the Jumbotron screen. Only con was the enormous merch line afterward.

    Devo was great, but.....

by Blondtonic on 11/19/23The Sound - Del Mar

Devo was great minus the last song. The worst part of our night.... Was the standing room only set up. It was a joke. Being only 5'4' I couldn't see a thing but massive bodies. We won't be going back to the sound for any concerts

    Devo Farewell tour

by Jats on 11/17/23The Sound - Del Mar

It was always fun to see Devo. But, you'd think this being their farewell tour they might have stuck around longer. The venue, The Sound , was the perfect size for such a show. The Staff were top notch in providing help to my seat.I needed an ADA seat as I am Disabled and Brittany the ticket manager made it all happen. I will Definitely be using Ticketmaster for shows at the Sound in Del Mar. I just hope they play longer than Devo did! Shame,Shame, Shame

    It was alright.

by brettbarbaro on 11/15/23The Sound - Del Mar

I am a die-hard Devo fan. I have all of their music, listen to them all the time, proselytize for them, and have even covered a couple of their songs in my band. This show left me with mixed feelings. It was pretty much their stock show, I think. I saw them July 22, 2003 at the Pacific Amphitheater, and they blew me away. This show was almost exactly the same. Now, perhaps that's what people want, and therefore Devo gave it to them. But for me it seemed like there was little growth in the band, little development of their message of De-evolution, and that was disappointing. This being their "Farewell Tour"(and I'm not sure it's really their last tour, but very well might be), I was hoping for some resolution to or development of the issues that the band has introduced. But instead it was more of the same, and that "same"is quite hopeless and negative. There was a brief appeal by Booji Boy at the end of the show for the audience to go out and make the world a better place - but their closing message of "it's a beautiful world for you - it's not for me"was, for me, a downer. Mark, Gerald, and Bob seemed sort of tired of their shtick. It was a little sad to see the three aging men trying to prance around the stage like they they did 20 years ago. But Gerald seemed to be having a good time, and Mark treated us to some wonderful keyboard work, so that was nice to see. I really wish them all the best.
