A great performance at a fantastic venue. It looked like the band put their all into it and had fun at the same time. Banhard is simply a brilliant all-around entertainer and each member of the band were right-on for the Cripple Crow classics, as well as contributing some of their own stellar songs. A diverse selection included many favorites and the whole show had an excellent flow. I really hope that Banhard keeps writing music and touring as he is in his own league as a singer, songwriter, and performer in general. He exudes all of the best qualities in good artists on stage, making his shows wonderfully enjoyable visually as well as musically.

    Devendra was awesome

A great variety of music and consistent talent. Music ranged from quiet singing accompanied by guitar to heavy metal. Devendra's Band was also really good.

He was his quintessential self of course,The Grogs were an excellent and integral part of the show. If anything the music they performed with him was the best ! As much as I love Devendra, I thought for a Sunday night, and being in a sitting crowd of people who were desperate to get up and dance ( its not that kind of venue) I thought some of his more tranquil tunes went on a wee bit too long.... but it was still a great show...

The show was unbelievable. Devendra and the Grogs were incredibly entertaining, professional yet goofy at the same time. I appreciated the change up on some songs-a true sign of talent. It was at times extremely energetic (Long Haired Child) and at other times quite intimate (I Remember), but NEVER boring. So many good songs. I wish the encore could have been longer. Worth every penny. Can't wait for the next show!

This was one of the best concerts I have ever attended. Devendra has so much charisma and stage presence. Not only is he an amazing musician, but his band is also impressive. The acoustics of the venue were phenomenal and contributed to the sound quality being on par with a studio recording. Additionally, his little dance moves added to the experience of each song. He made the concert quite intimate and made sure the audience was having fun along with him. It was a great experience.

    Fun

by Chapeau on 11/21/09Berklee Performance Center - Boston

No complaints except for the opening band Happy Birthday. If you ever see them live, you'll know what I mean. Also I know everyone wished they could dance but at Berklee Performance Center they were way too strict, and pretty much no one danced until the last song. assigned seating is just weird.

It was really amazing. Devendra was at his best, and the band behind him was absolutely priceless. Also all of the songs the Grogs played were awesome too! I would love to go again!

    Spectacular.

Incredible live set. The whole band is made by premium musicians. Check Little Joy too, I saw them opening Regina Spektor concert at HOB. Very warm and they definitely deserve more visibility.

    thumbs up

by whateverrr on 11/18/09Vic Theatre - Chicago

devendra and the band were awesome... the opening act was a little too obscure for my taste, and i was a little grossed out that the venue smelled like vomit, but it was a good time nonetheless.

This will be hard to top!

by PanicsInDetroit on 11/18/09The Ark - Ann Arbor

I was lucky enough to see Devendra Banhart play at The Ark in Ann Arbor, Michigan. An intimate venue with great acoustics. The Groggs (the band name of the night) accompanied Devendra for most of the songs, but on several occasions would leave Devendra to play solo acoustic songs. He played material from several of his albums, ranging from "The Charles C. Leary" which as Devendra had announced he hadn't played since he started touring 10 years ago, as well as newer tracks such as "Angelika". The show was very energetic, with lot of delightful banter and rambling in between songs. Another interesting note is that songs from the projects of the band members were also played. Luckey Remington showed off his singing skills, as well as Rodrigo Amarante playing "No One's Better Sake" from his project Little Joy, and lastly a debut of a new Priestbird song from drummer Gregory Rogove. Probably one of the best things about the show was the fact that you could tell the guys were enjoying themselves, even though they played for over two hours straight. Nothing sucks more when you go to a show and the band plays straight from the record. But not with Devendra, his was unforgettable. I would definitely recommend, and I hope he doesn't take too long to come back to town.

    Sweet and Salty

by nataluh on 11/18/09The Ark - Ann Arbor

Devendra and the boys played soft to hard, exciting butterflies in my stomach that made me want to jump out of my seat and dance... so I did, feeling just like a child. Somewhere between the opening song and when the guitar men gathered to play at their drummer like a jam session of friends, I realized that my enjoyment matched that which I felt at the Flaming Lips. Thanks dudes.

    Devendra Banhart!, not banhard....

by Anonymous on 11/17/09Vic Theatre - Chicago

probably the best show I saw all year (I even went to bonnaroo for 3 days this summer). We got there late so we had to sit in thebalcony, but we had a great view anyway. What can I say, the man is talented. His acoustic performance material was great, and the band performance was just as good. The best part of the night, i'm sure many will agree, is when during his last song a girl from the audience came onto the corner of the stage dancing..then another girl, and within a few minutes the stage was crowded with young girls dancing around all the band members. Probably one of the coolest audience participations i've ever witnessed. Then he came back for an encore afterwards! Definately gonna see him next time in Chicago, next time I'll get there early.

    Devendra Banhart and the Grogs

    by kitkatb23 on 11/17/09Vic Theatre - Chicago

Devendra never ceases to amaze in pure talent and a light heart. This show was a mix of new and old. The band really rocked out hard with Greg (on drums) leading an almost Zepplin sounding song and the closing with Long Haired Child with audience members joining the band in dance on the stage was an experience to be envied. The venue was set with chairs which it usually doesn't have. That was a bit of a down side as you weren't able to edge your way up closer to the stage. The sound could have been bumped up too, as it was sometimes difficult to hear Devendra in between songs. That by no means was any reflection of the bands fantastic performance.

Devendra Banhart Weaves His Magic At The Vic

by Salenelle on 11/17/09Vic Theatre - Chicago

Labels are a mess; they are limiting and misguided, unless you are buying low-sodium soup. To call this guy and what he does "Freak-Folk" misses the mark and truncates the group's talents. Devendra and the band of musicians (who have their own bands) displayed in their live show (as in their studio recordings) a vast knowledge of various genres of music, from scaled down acoustic numbers to hard-driving rock jams, from meandering hypnotic pieces to south-of-the-border stylings. It's eclectic - if you need a label. The band was tight, as usual, allowing Devendra freedom to display his inimitable vocal range, and use his wiry slinky body as an instrument through which to celebrate his joy at making music, sometimes stumbling around the stage with his gangly legs, laughing at himself, and having a real rapport with the crowd. Devendra is a conjurer on stage, evoking spirits from rock's past, the murky blues of the 30's, and even goddesses of Venezuela (Maria Lionza) to create something truly unique and impressive. Kudos to the awesome crowd for behaving themselves while they were up on stage, dancing with the band! Happy to see everyone knocking themselves out without anyone getting hurt!

    Fudgin' Genius!

    by Dan1209 on 11/17/09Vic Theatre - Chicago

I've been a big fan of Devendra's for only a year and wasn't sure how his sound would translate live, but from the moment him and his band came on stage and rocked out to Long Haired Child I felt confident it was going to be an incredible show. Surely enough, it was just that.
