Denver Nuggets History

One of the founding teams of the American Basketball Association in 1967, the Denver Nuggets franchise was originally known as the Denver Rockets. They preemptively changed their name to the Nuggets before the 1974–75 season, anticipating a move to the NBA (where Houston’s team already had the name). In their nine ABA seasons, the Nuggets made the playoffs seven times — losing in the finals to the New York Nets in the league's final year.

They were one of four ABA teams annexed to the NBA in 1976 and immediately were one of the most successful teams, winning the Midwest Division two straight years behind future Hall of Famers David Thompson and Dan Issel. In 1980, the arrival of another future Hall of Famer, high-scoring forward Alex English, began a run of nine consecutive seasons in the playoffs. Coach Doug Moe's offensive-minded squads made it past the first round of the playoffs four times, falling three times in the conference semifinals and once in the conference finals, in 1985 to the Los Angeles Lakers.

The team had only one winning season in the 1990s, but it was a memorable one. After finishing 42-40 to sneak into the playoffs as the eighth seed in the 1993–94 season, they upset the top-seed Seattle Supersonics in the first round of the playoffs, thanks in no small part to center Dikembe Mutombo's heroics.

Led by 2003 first-round draft pick Carmelo Anthony, the Nuggets reversed their fortunes to post 10 straight winning seasons beginning with the 2003–04 season. The Nuggets won their first NBA championship in 2023, led by two-time league MVP and Finals MVP Nikola Jokić, who collected his third regular season MVP in 2024.

Denver Nuggets at Ball Arena

The Nuggets play their home games at Ball Arena(Opens in new tab), which is a short walk from historic Larimer Square in bustling downtown Denver. The venue, with its sculpture-laden Grand Atrium, opened in 1999 as part of the city's six-year boom in sporting venues, which included new football and baseball facilities.

The venue replaced the venerable McNichols Sports Arena, which the Nuggets called home for more than two decades.

After paying for premium seats (rows BB), we had very obstructed views and could only see players from chest and above. Very disappointing experience as most lower priced seats had superior views! Will never pay premium for these seats ever again! There should have been a disclosure that these were obstructed view seats. After looking forward to this game for a very ling time we were terribly disappointed.

  • Warriors rock the house!

by Fred on 3/13/22Ball Arena - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

We had an amazing usher! Nuggets fans were lots of fun-teasing me about my Warriors jersey! The atmosphere at Ball was great- Rocky’s a super mascot!

  • Really heartbreaking

by Justine Donovan on 3/12/22Ball Arena - DenverRating: 1 out of 5

Very disappointed that we paid all that money and didn't get to see Klay or Curry play. I love the warriors and most if not all the players but that was like buying tickets to a concert to see your favorite artist and then them not showing up. Top it off, while waiting in line 2 hours before the game, i met so many families that drove hundreds of miles to take their kids to their very first game only to find out that their favorite players weren't going to play that night. I was already completely broken hearted but that was the worst!

  • Disappointed by The Warriors

    by onlyaustin1 on 3/10/22Ball Arena - DenverRating: 3 out of 5

It was great to watch the Nuggets play but we traveled 8 hours to see Curry, Thompson and Wiggins play and for Steve Kerr to set them out, it’s bad for basketball fans! Far from the old days when everybody played every game! Fans come to see the best play !

  • Amazing experience

    by 5280sportzfan on 1/26/22Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

The whole experience seeing the nuggets play for the first time was amazing. It was such a good game and the arena is such a gorgeous area to experience these games.

  • Fast entrance and short lines

by Justjay on 1/24/22Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

The Covid checkpoint, security and food lines were short fast and simple. Thank you for making the game an easy process.

  • Horrible time

by Family Guy on 1/19/22Ball Arena - DenverRating: 1 out of 5

I purchased the family tickets for the Nugget’s game because you know everyone is going to want to have a bite to eat at the game and it’s always good to support the venders. There is little to no information about how the meal voucher works or how much is on the ticket. Come to find out there is $18 per ticket for food loaded on eat ticket, that’s great right? Well I went to smash burger and had to wait 25 min for them to figure out how to use the vouchers to pay for my meal. By the time I got to my seat my food was cold and I missed the opening of the game. Second, the burger was just a patty with cheese on a bun, there was no lettuce or tomato or anything that is in their picture, just $8.50 for a little patty on a bun, totally sucked. Would have rather had a hotdog.

  • Pretty good

by Bob on 1/18/22Ball Arena - DenverRating: 2 out of 5

Major hassle with electronic tickets. Almost couldn’t get in.

    by Austin O. on 1/10/22Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

Loved this game even though it wasn’t really close. Clean venue, awesome choices of food, great seat location, easy access to arena. Beer was a little pricey but it is everywhere! Will come back again!

  • Great night with the Nuggets

    by ckone964 on 1/10/22Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

Great night out with my boys. Getting in was easier than I expected...no delays. The seats were great and the Nuggets took care of business!

  • Price way too high

    by Patty D on 12/26/21Ball Arena - DenverRating: 3 out of 5

Tickets have sky rocketed. Pay way to much for nose bleed seats. Use to be could sit way lower for same price. Seems like you’re trying to make up for the loss during the pandemic, but don’t take it out on fans.

  • #1 fan

by Basketball fanatic on 12/26/21Ball Arena - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

Loved watching the Hornets and Nuggets play! Section 302 row 5 seat 1 is a horrible seat DO NOT sit there but other than that I had a great time.

  • I

by Dgweller on 11/21/21Ball Arena - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

It was a fun night, although the Nuggets’ performance was lacking. My other favorite team is the Sixers, so it was nice to see them at least play well, although a closer game would have been appreciated.

  • Great

  • Interesting experience

by Vicky on 11/15/21Ball Arena - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

The event arena is EXTREMELY clean. I mean like, people were constantly cleaning the floors- and to be on level 3 of any sports arena, I didn’t expect it to be so nice. All of the staff were very friendly and I felt very safe since the COVID vaccine proofs were heavily enforced. The game itself was good, but the Nuggets need better offensive players. You won’t always win with just one really good player on your team.
