Dear Evan Hansen on Tour

Continuing a national tour that kicked off in October 2018, the musical Dear Evan Hansen is proving no less enthralling a cultural phenomenon on the road as it became during its Tony-winning Broadway run. Deemed "one of the most evocative portraits of the inner turmoil of adolescence ever put on stage" by the Los Angeles Times, Dear Evan Hansen moves audiences as no other play has done in years. A seamless blend of memorable songs tied to a grippingly dramatic story, this emotionally gut-punching tale of the socially anxious title character's duplicitous transformation into a social-media hero is a rare example of a wholly original modern musical drawn from real life. Conceived by budding Broadway songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul — and based on an incident from Pasek's high school years — Dear Evan Hansen premiered at Washington's Arena Stage and had its Off Broadway debut at New York's Second Stage Theatre prior to its official Broadway opening at the Music Box Theatre in December 2016. Newcomer Ben Levi Ross, who began his professional career as the Broadway understudy for role originator (and Tony Award winner) Ben Platt, brings a different but no less moving skill set to his portrayal of the vulnerable and confused title character. Michael Greif, who won a Tony for his streamlined direction of the musical, continues to helm the production. Composers Pasek and Paul, along with book writer Steven Levenson, all earned Tonys for their efforts. (Pasek and Paul went on to win a best-picture Academy Award for their subsequent project, La La Land.) Songs from the musical — including Evan's first-act finale, "You Will Be Found," and his mother's second-act heart-tugger, "So Big/So Small" — have entered pop music's pantheon, and the original cast album won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album in 2018. Projections of phone and computer screens designed by Peter Negrini make the show a timely reflection of technology's ambiguous grip on our attention and emotions. Not only for the young, Dear Evan Hansen has something meaningful to say to all who've ever considered themselves "on the outside always lookin' in."

    Deeply Emotional

by Mom on 2/3/19Paramount Theatre - Seattle

I took my 2 teenage daughters to see this show. I spent most of the time emotionally watching such anguish and conflicted emotions dance across the stage. Sad to know how real this story is. Excellent casting and performance by all.

A better play than a musical

    by R. T. on 2/2/19Paramount Theatre - Seattle

Overall it was very entertaining and worth seeing. I was disappointed in the music though. Looking through a window and You will be found were the only 2 songs in the whole play that were memorable. I was expecting better from the duo that did La La Land and The Greatest Showman.

    Unfinished

The first half is good but the second half is entirely predictable and uninteresting. Needs a heavy rewrite.

    Talented Cast, Good Story, but...

by Mary on 1/31/19Paramount Theatre - Seattle

With as much as I paid for the tickets to see this show, I did not reap the production value as anticipated. The actors were great and the story was worthy. However, staging was a let down and the music didn't vary much. I think they could have cut a few songs out and nothing would've changed. The Paramount is a beautiful theatre, but it's difficult to see the stage when seats are stacked directly behind each other and beanies are worn popping above the head. Why don't people know to take their hats off in a theatre anymore? It's the considerate thing to do.

    Interesting experience

    by N. G. on 1/31/19Paramount Theatre - Seattle

I was looking forward to watching 2017 Tony award winner. I knew that the plot of this play would not be a comfortable one, as the story is actually tragical. In general, I would say that I am glad I saw it, it was an interesting experience. But not positive. The stage work was good, the actors played well. But several things were not as they should be (and it could be avoided). First is the quality of sound. It was not very well regulated. The loud parts were too loud to the point when the words are not heard, the quiet parts were almost not audible. it was very noticeable during the main character singing. His voice was not good. I understand that it should kind of mimic teenager boy voice with all the young boy voice problems, but it was too much. I liked the acting skills, but not singing. Also I am not sure that I was comfortable with all these jokes in such a tragical play. I understand that it is good to attract attention to the young kids phycological health, but I don't like when they try to make a farce out of it. But this is a personal preference issue.

A must see! Still thinking about it days later!

by SeaCar on 1/31/19Paramount Theatre - Seattle

I loved everything about this show! Stephen Christopher Anthony as Evan Hansen was pure delight! The characters have depth, the music is wonderful, and the story is powerful. Each character provides a unique perspective on the human need for connection, and I'm still gaining new insights as I continue to think about the show. I plan to see it again, it's really THAT good!

I love the soundtrack, and was pleasantly surprised how much better it was live. I laughed, I cried, I loved it! Even my husband, who isn’t a fan of musical theater enjoyed the performance. Highly recommend!

    Evan Hansen is exceptional!

by Garys on 1/27/19Paramount Theatre - Seattle

I came to the this production knowing nothing about the plot line. I just had heard it was a great show. I had tried to see it in NYC and it was totally sold out. So, when this tour came to Seattle, I had to grab the chance. I am so glad I did! The cast was amazing, the story was compelling and the music and singing was engaging and memorable. I thought the set and lighting design was inspired! I have been raving about this show to everyone I see since I saw it last Thursday nighht. I even tried to buy two tickets to the Saturday night show so she could experience this powerful and moving production. Unfortunately, all sold out!! This NYC tour, the first for Evan Hansen, was 100% the best! There was no doubt that this production was equal to it's Broadway home production! I was thoroughly impressed.! Thank you!

    Great Experience for the money

by Murphy2696 on 10/15/18Town Hall - New York

The show was great. The broadway cast members were so talented and there voices are unforgettable. Hearing the play authors version and how this story came about made me really look forward to reading the book. The authors spoke and played instruments what a creative and talented group of men. The queer eye guest speakers kept the night moving and interesting. Every person involved with the show has such talent and was very interesting to listen too. I really enjoyed the show and for the price we got star power, interesting facts about the book and play, great music, a bunch of laughs as well as a signed copy of the book. What else could you ask for.

Great event! Not only was there engaging dialog from the panel but we were treated with a mini-concert with the show’s composers, cast members, and special guests... PLUS an autographed copy of the book. Truly an awesome night all around.

    Great event

by NYCNicole on 10/11/18Town Hall - New York

It was great to be at the novel launch event and hear more about the process of the book being written, as well as other questions answered. However, for most of the show I couldn't see much (i was 3 row left) because the panel was not lined up in a straight line. The chairs onstage was somewhat circular so for the majority of the show, Justin's back was to 1/2 the audience. I hope for the rest of the tour they take the stage setup into account. Also the music stands and mics were in the way but he eventually noticed and moved them in between performances.

    Dear Evan Hansen book launch

by DEHfan on 10/11/18Town Hall - New York

The Dear Evan Hansen book launch evening was amazing! The small size of Town Hall lent itself to providing an imtimate evening of entertainment. The guests were all top notch and talented. I walked away feeling like I really was a part of something so special; live theatre that was impromptu and an evening that only us lucky ticketgoers could experience. Tan France and Antoni Porowski were the perfect hosts because you could tell they shared the same appreciation for the talents of the team behind Dear Evan Hansen show and book, while they also exuded so much approachable charm, you felt like you were sitting next to them at a dinner party. (don't even get me started on how it warmed my heart as they held hands during the song performances) And the surprise guests to sing stellar songs from the show, or read passages from the book, elevated the evening. The raw emotion from the performances reminded me of the energy which made me fall in love with the Dear Evan Hansen Broadway experience. And Mykal Kilgore was literally perfection. The way he filled the venue with his heartfelt voice was reminiscent of a church revival, he corralled us all into this bubble of hope and inclusion and just plain love that transcended just a discussion about a book, but more than that, a forum to celebrate the success of a theatrical and literary effort that accomplished the noble cause of making people feel connected. Bravo!
