Deal Casino in Concert
Even early in their career, the members of Deal Casino realized that a fantastic live show was important to the long-term success of their band. The Asbury Park, New Jersey-based rock quartet made it a point to book frequent concerts, and even played an ambitious 12-week weekly residency at their hometown club, The Saint, in summer 2014.
Unsurprisingly, this early legwork and time on the stage continue to pay dividends today. Deal Casino is a formidable live outfit that is agile enough to play delicate acoustic gigs or gritty rock 'n' roll shows, with the kind of internal chemistry that allows the band to burst into extended psychedelic jams or noisy freakouts at a moment's notice.
Formed in Sparta, New Jersey, in 2013 (but based in Asbury Park since 2014), the band formerly went by Something About January before deciding to rename themselves after a Jersey Shore beach club called the Deal Casino. Although early work drew comparisons to Neon Trees — mainly due to vocalist Joe Parella's soulful vocals and spiraling falsetto — Deal Casino has evolved into the sort of band that resists easy categorization.
The band's 2017 self-titled full-length is an alternative rock tour de force whose compositions call to mind any number of styles — including fuzzy blues, energetic rock 'n' roll, red-hot glam, and ebullient pop-rock — while 2018's 'Isadora Duncan' EP builds even further on the band's musical progressions: The brooding "Dirty T-Shirt" is Radiohead-esque, while "Soft Machine" is reminiscent of the driving soul-rock favored by TV on the Radio.
Overall, the songs exhibit the kind of dense flourishes and arrangements that point to Deal Casino heading in yet more sophisticated directions in the future. Appropriately, the group has graduated to national U.S. tours, a move that is no doubt just a stepping stone to bigger and better things, and even more intriguing sonic aspirations.
Excellent Concert! From the opening song right up to the encore, full throttle all the way. This Band has definitely honed its skills over the past few years. Looking forward to their next performance. Love the energy they exude!
