About

DEAD KENNEDYS IN CONCERT:

Few bands have mastered the art of the snarling, politically charged hardcore punk anthem as well as Dead Kennedys. For more than three decades, Jello Biafra and company have been the standard-bearers for compact punk tunes that blend sarcastic humor and serious political sentiment, and fans will be happy to know time has softened none of their acerbic wit. Biafra is known for his combative presence and vitriolic onstage rants, and he remains a supreme showman in his fourth decade with the band. Whether he's satirizing privileged Americans on "Holiday in Cambodia" or criticizing Golden State politics on "California Über Alles", Biafra always gives ticket buyers an adrenaline-fueled show that leaves little doubt why he's revered as one of punk's most iconic figures.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Dead Kennedys formed in San Francisco in 1978 and quickly built a local following with their provocative name and riotous live shows. They released their debut single "California Über Alles" in 1979, hitting the road shortly after for a well-received East Coast tour that helped them establish a national fanbase. The band's 1980 debut album Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables was a Top 40 Hit in the UK, thanks in large part to the single "Holiday in Cambodia" -- a No. 2 hit on the British indie charts and an undisputed punk rock classic. The band remained a formidable musical and political force through the mid-'80s, continually expanding their sound over the course of three more seminal albums before breaking up in 1986. All was not lost, however -- Biafra, original guitarist East Bay Ray, and original bassist Klaus Flouride got the band back together in 2001, and they've been flooring fans around the world with epic performances on tour ever since.

This was a good show. I had never heard the Raging Nathans but liked them. HR's performance met my expectations. Dead Kennedy's replacement singer was adequate in the big shoes he had to fill. The set list was relatively long. My main disappointment was that they failed to play their hit song Soup Is Good Food...a song about being fired....in DC....where thousands of people each week are getting laid off without cause. It was a very surprising omission.

  • Well played!

The DKs far exceeded my expectations. They were tight, musical and fun. The vocalist did his own thing, not trying to be Jello Biafra - and he was a worthy replacement. I had a great time. Now if we could only do something about those ticket prices. But alas, as long as demand exceeds supply…

  • Great to be in an angsty room

by QBLR on 4/6/259:30 CLUB - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

I last saw DKs in 1985 and was not sure what to expect with the current lineup. The singer was awesome and had all the quirky moves and political aggression I have always associated with the band. The sound was great and the band was tight. I was so pleasantly surprised withe crowd - all ages, singing along, and bouncing/moshing around. A packed 9:30 club is the perfect place for a night like that, was so happy that I went!

  • Epic

by J.R. on 4/5/25Theatre of Living Arts - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

I brought my 9 year old to the show and we were blown away,we even snagged autographs on a record and my son got to take some pics and chat with some true legends.. great live performance. The only thing I’d recommend is when you are parking a car near the TLA in Philly to park in a garage around the corner from the venue because the signs are so confusing your car will most likely get towed

  • Lots of fun, though a bit short

by Dave C on 4/4/25Irving Plaza Powered By Verizon 5G - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

Dead Kennedys were in full form and well worth it. Having said that, 70 minutes is a bit short. I'd rather forego one of the two opening acts for a few more DK songs.

  • DK killed it!

Fantastic show.. they played like they did back in the day. They sounded like one of their records. I had a great time. Lots of young people there. I'm happy that they know who the band is and just a great great time!

  • Beyond expectations

by Braingerous on 3/31/25Paradise Rock Club presented by Citizens - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

First time seeing Dead Kennedys live. Great live show and way above expectations. I was in awe of how energetic and tight the band played. I had a big house move the next day and my wife discouraged from going to the show. It would have been a big mistake. Don’t ask for permission. Ask for forgiveness. Feel free to use this as a new title track!

  • The Entire Night was Truly an Incredible Experience

by San Diego Amanda…(The Marin County Runaway 😉) on 10/16/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Growing up in the Bay Area, I spent the majority of my youth listening to the Dead Kenndys and sporting the DK logo on almost everything I owned throughout my middle and high school years… (and beyond). Unfortunately, it was the mid-90’s and the band had all but broken up long before my time. When I saw they were coming here to San Diego, where I now live, I scrambled to buy tickets. The date of the show was rather unfortunate for them because Rancid and the Dropkick Murphys were playing at the Padres Stadium the very same night, practically walking distance from the Venue. I’ve seen those bands before and no doubt will (and since have) seen them again…BUT the Dead Kenndys playing live was definitely a rare opportunity. I brought my (then) 13 year old daughter, and was pleasantly surprised by the turnout, given the circumstances. A good mix of old school die-hard fans, younger generation new fans… and those like myself, somewhere in between. The band sounded amazing. Skiip was not too terribly obnoxious, nor did he try too hard to be a “Jello” replacement. He did make some insults to the audience, but honestly I don’t think anyone realized it as apparently “went right over their heads” while they cheered him on… I did have to laugh when he told a story about his doctor saying he’s too old for punk rock… especially because true punk rock is literally from his generation. Me being in my forties and all now, I’m actually too young to have been able to experience the REAL punk rock scene. Sadly it was before my time. However, as music lover, journalist, radio comedy writer, and even a former freelance arts and entertainment writer back in my younger years, I was fortunate to get to hear many a story about those days. As a natural writer I could go on and on… Let’s just say the night ended with my then 13 year old daughter (and I) going out for pizza with the band. Something my 13 year old self would’ve about died for… I’m especially grateful to East Bay Ray for that experience. As an aspiring guitar player herself, my daughter has since become quite inspired by his unique guitar stylings and has definitely became quite a DK fan… and made me an extremely proud Mom. 😁 I’d say it was a pretty memorable show.

They were so great!!! Sound was top notch!!! Skip was in full form and it was a great show... verry lucky to see them a third time.

  • Ok, not great.

They played their top hits from over the years, not the same without Jello on vocals. Maybe, Jello should have paid the band their due royalties when they were due. The band looks like they need to retire.
