The recent appearance at the legendary Birchmere in Alexandria, VA by The David Grisman Sextet was musicianship at its finest. The entire ensemble led by Mr. Grisman performed two sets of some of the most amazing music to be found anywhere. You do not want to miss this group if they come to a venue anywhere close to you.
I had never seen him before and own several CDs that I listen to often...it is Jerry Garcia week and it was so fitting so see him. Talk about music genius, I brought my 7 year old (it was his first concert)... you could not take your eyes off the band, every note, tone, tap, bump, was a perfect forest of sound. Loved it!!!!
Grisman was amazing on the mandolin--no surprise--but every member of the band was fabulous. They all got solos to really show off their talent, and they all got lots of applause from the audience. Each performer was really sensitive to the others, and they just sounded great together. I brought a friend who didn't know Grisman's music, and wasn't sure she'd like anything remotely related to bluegrass--and she loved this "newgrass" jazzy acoustic music. A good time was had by all!
My first time at this venue and I really enjoyed it. David and his band were fantastic.... although I was hoping for a few Grateful Dawg songs....
I've seen D.G. several times now and he's always really good! It was very enjoyable, especially when he gave his "history lessons" about the great old tunes and then played 'em. His son was slappin' that bass pretty good, too. When you have great musicians and talent behind a great, talented musician, you know it's gonna be HOT! A wonderful venue,too, I might add.
Great show by legendary artist DG! It doesnt get any more real than this when it comes to authentic bluegrass pickin' and tellin of stories. Not only was the music at such a high quality level, the interspersed history lesson on where the music came from, who played it and the dynamics of the personalities and how that affected the evolution of bluegrass was worth more than the price of a ticket.
An amazing show at an awesome venue. If you love bluegrass and the history of bluegrass this is a can't miss show. Afterwards, David and the band hung around to meet people and sign autographs. Just a really great bunch of human beings. :)
