Beautiful, heartfelt concert
by Sjel on 11/26/09Abravanel Hall - Salt Lake CityRating: 4 out of 5I attended both Salt Lake City shows. While David's voice may have been stronger on the first night, the second show was the one that stood out for me. Perhaps it's because the audience was a little older and there was much less screaming and a lot more sitting and just enjoying the beautiful music, from Benton Paul's opening all the way through to David's encore performance of "O Holy Night." David seemed a bit more nervous and there were some glitches and a few lyric flubs here and there, but what a beautiful evening it was (and made moreso by the flubs, if you will). Despite the fact that he did struggle now and then, I actually thought his pop songs were more solid on the second night. He sounded especiallly good on "Zero Gravity" and "Crush." I think "Prayer of the Children" was especially gorgeous on night two. I also loved his rendition of "Fields of Gold" because I have always loved Eva Cassidy's version. Beautiful to hear a male voice sing that rendition, very similar to hearing him sing "Imagine." His Christmas set is so diverse that I always struggle to come up with a favorite or favorites. I really enjoy them all for different reasons, but I really love the arrangement and vocals on "The First Noel" and "Silent Night." And it was lovely to hear him and his mom duet on "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." Not perfect, but the best he could give at the time and I so appreciated that. It was easy to receive the gift he gave through his music. I was so glad that I got to attend the second concert. All the screaming and popstar worshipping (that seemed to drown out the music) of the first night left me empty and frustrated. I struggled to enjoy the pure beauty of the music. I was just glad that I got a second chance to really enjoy it with an audience that seemed more focused on the music than the performer.
