About

Dave Matthews Band in Concert

With a career spanning more than 27 years, Dave Matthews Band is one of the most influential bands in rock history. In 1991, vocalist/guitarist Dave Matthews decided to put some songs he had written on tape and sought the assistance of drummer Carter Beauford and saxophonist LeRoi Moore, who were both accomplished jazz musicians in the local Charlottesville, VA music scene. 16-year-old bassist Stefan Lessard came on board shortly thereafter. Their infectious, distinctive sound garnered lots of early attention and a die-hard loyal fan base, catapulting the band into one of the most successful touring acts of the past three decades.

The group has since released nine studio albums and numerous live recordings, selling a collective 38 million CDs and DVDs combined since the 1994 release of its major label debut, Under the Table and Dreaming. The GRAMMY®-winning band's many hits include "What Would You Say," "Crash Into Me," "Too Much," "Everyday," "American Baby," "Funny The Way It Is," "Mercy" and "Samurai Cop (Oh Joy Begin)."

Founding member LeRoi Moore passed away in August of 2008 and the band paid tribute to him with 2009's Platinum-certified Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King. Dave Matthews Band has since welcomed longtime collaborators/touring musicians Jeff Coffin (saxophone), Rashawn Ross (horns) and Tim Reynolds (guitar) into the lineup and - most recently - keyboardist Buddy Strong.

With 2018's Come Tomorrow, Dave Matthews Band became the first group in history to have seven consecutive studio albums debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. In a Critic's Pick review, The New York Times observed, "willed optimism fills the songs on 'Come Tomorrow,' while cynicism and irony are nowhere within earshot... each song notes the fears and sorrows it's determined to overcome. The music does that, with consolation in its melodies and a life force in its rhythms."

Renowned for their live performances, Dave Matthews Band has sold over 24 million tickets since its inception and ranked as the biggest ticket seller worldwide of the past decade. The group's Bama Works Fund, established in 1999, has raised more than $52 million dollars for humanitarian and environmental initiatives.

    Disappointed

by Liz on 11/14/23John Paul Jones Arena - Charlottesville

There were moments during the Dave concert that were great however the majority of the concert was a bit flat. Loved seeing the 2 local musicians on stage! Otherwise, Dave showed no love to C’ville. And the concert tickets were ridiculously expensive. Overall a disappointment.

    Need to go again

by Bill on 11/14/23John Paul Jones Arena - Charlottesville

I went to both nights at John Paul Jones for my first ever Dave Matthews Band Concert. I am a new young fan so I expected it to be chill and alright. The band still sounds like they did before I was born and Dave was as he said, “feeling a bit funky tonight!” I cried 3 times which is crazy because I’ve never cried at a concert. 10/10, trombone shorty made my dream of getting Crush electric!

    Magical…

by Queensiron on 11/14/23John Paul Jones Arena - Charlottesville

I can’t say enough about Dave, the band, and his guests. My son and I had an amazing musical experience that transcended the generation gap. Thank you Dave for bringing people together year after year. We love you! The only constructive feedback I have for the venue is the entrance lines were poorly labeled. There was no staff presence to help folks get in the right lines, Warehouse tickets vs. general admission. It meant some early arrived ended up late entering. Not a big deal for me and mine, but some folks were frustrated. Otherwise, it was clean, had great signage, and was very comfortable. My seats were excellent, and I’ve no complaints whatsoever. Thank you JPJA!

Blocked view of stage after upgrading tickets!

by antz on 11/13/23John Paul Jones Arena - Charlottesville

I adore Dave Matthews Band and it was my birthday weekend, so I decided to upgrade three tickets at John Paul Jones Arena to be closer to the stage. The seats were directly behind the sound stage, which was raised above our seats. Directly in front of our seats were 3 folding chairs to accommodate special guests on the sound stage. When the people came to sit in those chairs, we couldn't see ANYTHING! We spent the whole night moving side to side, looking in between those people, sound equipment, computers, etc.. I also have pictures that prove just how insane this became. I have been to MANY live shows and I have NEVER had seats as terrible as these were. The seats should NOT be sold to anyone else in the future due to an entirely blocked view.

    Summarized- Amazing

by SeanH on 11/13/23John Paul Jones Arena - Charlottesville

DMB never disappoints. In a sold out large venue they manage to make you feel like you are up close and they are focused on you. The songs are comfortable but every concert is a new take on them. The crowd is a large family for the experience. DMB is our favorite don’t miss band everytime the come to town.

Maybe I’m too old for this…

by Starbuck57 on 11/13/23John Paul Jones Arena - Charlottesville

First song totally iff key. Long pauses between songs…no coordination between band members. Couldn’t see as most of crowd stood most of the concert. So loud couldn’t make out the lyrics or appreciate the musicianship. Lots of pot smoking (no issue in principle…) in an indoor nonsmoking venue. Left after an hour and fifteen minutes.

    DMB Home Town

by David on 11/13/23John Paul Jones Arena - Charlottesville

My fellow live music adventurer, Elke, and I went to see DMB’s homecoming at John Paul Jones. Synchronicity working its magic put us underneath the banners of Buzzy Wilkinson, a UVA great from my hometown of Bluefield and Terry Holland, a wonderful part of my Davidson and UVA experiences. The show was brilliant, a mash of jazz, jam, funk, the streets of Soweto and Afro-Cuban fusion. Led Zeppelin, Issac Hayes, Motown, Pearl Jam, Psychedelia, late nights at Miller’s all were threads to follow and let go. Great guest appearances by jazz master, John D’earth free bridging Satellite and, yes, the virtuoso, Trombone Shorty taking us down on the Bayou. What a journey.
