    Master at the Piano

by Steviewonder13 on 10/31/09Shea's Performing Arts Center - Buffalo

Dave Brubeck played an amazing concert in Buffalo! It was an honor to finally hear him in person. Owning a number of his albums (CDs) did not detract in any way from this experience. When he invited his son on stage and all of the musicians started playing / dueling it was great music! The venue is a nicely restored grand old theater in Buffalo. During intermision he was formally inducted into the Classical Music hall of fame. Well worth the admission price and I am so glad that I was able to see this musical legend in person!

    Excellence from a master.

by Oakmoss on 10/23/09Shea's Performing Arts Center - Buffalo

Although 88, Brubeck has lost none of his mastery. His fellow quartet members are masters in their own rights, although our hometown Bobby Militello was a little wanting on the flute. The drummer was one of the cleanest percussionists I've ever heard! One must see Dave while we are still blessed with his wonderful talent.

Dave Brubeck & Quartet featuring Bobby Militeelo

by Tonygags on 10/12/09Shea's Performing Arts Center - Buffalo

the most splendid, relaxed, enjoyable concert I have been to in years. The quartet was enjoying it, Brubeck explained some of the compositions with interesting history and stories.Bobby Militello was outstanding on sax and flute, as always. A final treat was Dave's son on stage from York University, Toronto where he teaches. He played along with his cello, and it was a treat to see him and his dad exchange loving and admirable glances to each other.

Brubeck - The "Living Legend" delivers!!

by easygoindoc on 10/12/09Shea's Performing Arts Center - Buffalo

I have seen Dave Brubeck perform many times, and never has he failed to live up to his status as a "Living Legend." The record remains intact. Dave included his son Matt into the program and it was nearly magical. Bobby Militello and Michael Moore were outstanding as well. As a bonus, we were honored to watch Dave's acceptance into the Jazz Hall of Fame onstage. Mr. Brubeck turns 89 in a few weeks, and you can see the wear and tear on his frail body. But his mind and his fingers seem untouched by age, and it was again a performance I shall never forget!

    Brubeck still hot!

by FirstWardIrish on 10/12/09Shea's Performing Arts Center - Buffalo

50 years seems like yesterday, at east that 'show Brubeck is still playing Take Five, Blue Rondo a la Turk and 3 to get ready and four to go. Militello's sax and flute playing are amazing and the show stopping bass player Michael Moore was exciting to watch. Add to that the subtle tones of the poly-rythmic drumming of Randy Jones and this was a concert to be remembered.

    Still Amazing

by THEWAD55 on 10/12/09Shea's Performing Arts Center - Buffalo

At 88 years old Dave and his band are as good as ever. Bobby Milletello is much better than I knew or expected.

    Brubeck Still Reigns

by Sonja051 on 10/11/09Shea's Performing Arts Center - Buffalo

The Brubeck concert on Saturday (10-9-09) showed why he still has crowd appeal. From his rapid fingers on the keyboard (despite being almost 89!!!) to his graciously letting Bobby Militello (the hometown guy) shine, he showed that he is a truly great talent. The crowning touch was the addition of his also very talented son, Matthew who joined them for the second set. It was a joy and a pleasure to watch these accomplished musicians still enjoy the musical experience. Their joy infected the rather small but very appreciative crowd. I especially enjoyed Bobby Militello's flute solo in Over the Rainbow. Despite being a bit 'breathy' he created true magic. It was a fantastic evening and it showed why Brubeck is to be honored at the Kenedy Center in December.

    A legend indeed

by BuffaloJoe on 10/11/09Shea's Performing Arts Center - Buffalo

We have all read of some occasion where the reviewer was “in the presence of greatness" with lofty descriptions of once in a lifetime experiences. I never thought I would get the chance to be one of them. My family and I were honored to spend an evening with a living legend whose command of the keys could possibly only be matched by the joy on his face as his son (who lives and works in the Toronto area) had a special opportunity to sit in with the band given Buffalo’s proximity. With the grandeur that is Buffalo’s Shea’s Performing Arts Center the stage was set for an evening of memories that are guaranteed to last more than the 50th anniversary of the Time Out album being celebrated. On more than one point in the performance the soloist whether it was Bobby Militello on sax or flute, Michael Moore on upright bass, Randy Jones with precision and mastery of the drums, or Dave Brubeck himself held the audience and venue in their hand with a clarity of sound and precision of expression that left the listener on the edge of their seat. Respect from the audience was evident in applause and lack of interruption of the unwelcome kind, I think everyone in attendance did not want to spoil the magic – a rare treat in today’s H1N1 and Technology infused population. The warmth and energy between the quartet was obvious and genuine and the back and forth “battle” between the young Brubeck on Cello and Mr. Moore on the Base had audience and performers alike with the satisfied smile of a great days work from the hands of extremely skilled craftsman. Buffalo’s own Bobby Militello who has been with Mr. Brubeck’s Quartet since 1982 certainly did himself and the home town proud, you sir I am happy to proclaim a legend as well. Thank you gentlemen from myself and my family, it will be a long time before a present of this kind ever comes my way again.

    Brubeck is still the master

by Singingirl on 10/11/09Shea's Performing Arts Center - Buffalo

When you see this little, fragile man gently make his way to the piano, you wonder how he can begin to still play with any command of his instrument. Then, when he touches the keys, you realize why Brubeck has been legendary for decades. He plays with grace and technique. It was a night for jazz lovers to watch lovers of jazz perform.

    Dave Brubeck was FANTASTIC!

by DimitriD on 10/11/09Shea's Performing Arts Center - Buffalo

This event was by far the best show we have seen in 10 years. Although just weeks shy of his 89th birthday, Dave delivered over and over again. The show lasted nearly 3 hours. Band members gave outstanding performances - especially Bobby Militello on sax and flute. Highlight of the evening was the addition of Dave's son on cello from Toronto. Highly recommend this show for anyone with any interest in jazz. Don't miss him!
