Dark Star Orchestra on Tour

More than just a tribute band, the seven members of the Dark Star Orchestra are dedicated to the Grateful Dead live experience, best known for playing full setlists picked from their 2,000+ concerts. The Grateful Dead's live show is legendary, a catalog of improvisation traded and celebrated across decades. The Dark Star Orchestra re-creates the Dead's intra-band interplay and pastoral guitar soloing. Remarkably devoted and true to the source material, DSO tailors their arrangements, gear and tempos to the era of the evening. Some nights find the DSO creating original setlists, playing sets from the Jerry Garcia Band or even jamming with members of the Dead themselves.

Dark Star Orchestra in Concert

Formed in Chicago in 1997, Dark Star Orchestra provides generations of fans with the chance to experience entire Grateful Dead sets, song by song. Named after "Dark Star," a part of the Dead's set known for exploratory jams, DSO rose to national prominence in 1998 when Mike Gordon and John Fishman of Phish joined them for a performance of the Dead's 1983 Halloween show. DSO promptly became a touring sensation: At 2,800 shows and counting, DSO have played more shows than the Grateful Dead themselves. They ultimately enlisted keyboardist Rob Barraco of Phil Lesh and Friends, the Other Ones and the 2003 touring version of the Dead. The DSO have played Bonnaroo and Milwaukee's SummerFest, and they've been hosting their own annual fests for years - the Dark Star Jubilee in Ohio and the Jam in the Sand in Jamaica. Perhaps the most important honor for DSO, though, is enlisting actual members of the Grateful Dead, having performed on stage accompanied by Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, Donna Jean Godchaux, Vince Welnick and Tom Constanten. A 2018 show even found guitarist Jeff Mattson playing Jerry Garcia's custom-made guitar, "Wolf," which the Dead founder used for two decades.

  • Unbelievable show

by John B on 7/2/24The Ledge Amphitheater - Waite ParkRating: 5 out of 5

Unfortunately they did not sell out. Though weather called for rain and it didn't. So that allowed everybody to move down closer with plenty of room to dance the night away. This is the first time I saw Dark Star Orchestra, I was totally impressed, and this is after seeing the Grateful Dead over 100 times in my life. Would definitely go again this is the first time I've ever written a lengthy review. I wish they would come someplace closer to Saint Paul Minnesota. I believe they would do a sell-out show there with no problem. I would definitely go again I highly recommend it. Thank you gentleman for a great show.

Everything from the venue to the music was perfect. Take a letter Maria

  • OK but not the Grateful Dead

by Paul on 5/22/24Greenfield Lake Amphitheater - WilmingtonRating: 3 out of 5

Nice small venue at Greenfield Amphitheater. Band disappointed me. Went to GD concerts in the early ‘70’s both with and after Pigpen, both before and after the Godchaux’s. Dark Star’s lead singer just is not Jerry, and the mixing seemed off. Voices seemed a bit muddled or just unclear. Far too long of a drum solo even for a GD concert - I never liked the drum solos back in the day, either. Too many of the newer GD songs from mid ‘70’s onward. Not enough of the old stuff which was generally better. So I hate to say it, but meh.

  • Deadhead revived

by Pappy on 5/22/24Greenfield Lake Amphitheater - WilmingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Great show! Took me back to yester year. The band was "Dead On". Help on the way and Franklin's tower were excellent. Closed my eyes and could swear it was Jerry returned. Would definitely see them again

The band was sharp as can be! The venue was outstanding! I had an excellent time. I went by myself and had absolutely no problem making new friends. Great time!

Greenfield Lake Amphitheater is our favorite venue and DSO always brings it!

  • Great band; venue too smokey

by Elizabeth on 5/22/24Greenfield Lake Amphitheater - WilmingtonRating: 1 out of 5

Awesome music and crowd with positive vibes, but left after 2 songs because of the smoke. Even off to the side in the grass the smoke was pervasive and heavy. Have tickets to other shows but am selling and won’t go back to this venue due to the smoke

  • close your "eyes to the world"and go back in time.

by matt on 5/22/24Greenfield Lake Amphitheater - WilmingtonRating: 5 out of 5

absolutely incredible! Positively 4th St, if you didn't know better you would think Jerry was singing and playing. it was magical. If you love the Grateful Dead its a show you don't miss. If you don't like the Grateful Dead I don't know what to say, besides you are missing out

  • GLA

by Wizard on 5/22/24Greenfield Lake Amphitheater - WilmingtonRating: 4 out of 5

GLA is the best venue in town. Not too big, not too small. Generous sized seating, large bathrooms. But, they need to bring back draft beer and more local selections. Would it kill you to have a Brown/Amber Ale? Also, please put a couple port-a-potties outside the venue. Tailgaters have nothing but the woods and large bushes😬. Primitive

  • Disappointing

by Gordon Leichter on 5/22/24Greenfield Lake Amphitheater - WilmingtonRating: 2 out of 5

I have been to many DSO shows. When they recreate a Dead show, they are spot on. Last time they were in Wilmington they rocked. It was a fantastic show. The one they just did at the Greenfield Amphitheatre was terrible. It wasn't a recreation, it was just them picking random songs, which weren't very good. They need to stick to what they are good at. They have done a great job to capture the sound of the Dead, but if the next show I attend is like If the one they just did, I will be passing on future shows. You need to know your audience!

  • DSO GLA

Great staff...Great band! Super fun venue and nice that you could move around the venue without a lot of hassle

  • Dark Star Orchestra

by GP on 3/27/24The Wellmont Theater - MontclairRating: 5 out of 5

DSO is a Grateful Dead cover band that has played 2,500+ concerts. They re-create concerts from the Dead thru the years. They also do shows where they have elective sets. The Elective sets have some non-dead songs included. Akin to the Dead shows, you will not know what Dark Star will play until the play it which makes the concerts much more fun IMO. They are a very fun band. Come prepared to dance and sing along for the entire 3-4 hour show.

Great concert and even the sound was good, totally enjoyed the concert

  • Wonderful show - but greed wins every time!

by KS on 3/26/24The Wellmont Theater - MontclairRating: 4 out of 5

The venue was beautiful and brought back so many memories for me since I grew up in the Montclair area. DSO was just fantastic! They never disappoint. Lisa’s solos were the highlights of both shows. Friday night was manageable on the floor in GA. Crowded but room to move. Saturday was actually frightening as people were jammed in so tight it felt unsafe and way oversold. I retreated to the back of the room near an exit. Still enjoyed the show. Next time I will splurge for a seat if this is how the venue will sell tickets going forward.

  • Dark Star Orchestra rocked the Wellmont Theater

by rippletoo on 3/26/24The Wellmont Theater - MontclairRating: 5 out of 5

I attended both shows this past weekend at The Wellmont Theater in Montclair, NJ. Dark Star Orchestra (DSO) did not disappoint. They are very talented musicians and they put on a great show. The show was scheduled for 8pm and they started right around 8:15 pm each night and played close to midnight. On Friday night they played what they wanted to, and the next night they played a Dead show from March 1987 from Oakland, CA, with a bonus encore of “Take A Letter Maria”, sung by Skip Vangelas. It’s always a pleasure to see DSO. I hope they come back to Massachusetts or NH so I don't have to travel as far next time :-).
